Is Price Manipulation against the rules?

Most people I talk to say that price manipulation isn't against the rules, saying it isn't bug abuse, because there is no "bug" with the Grand Exchange, and therefore there is no bug to be abused,

also they say that you're manipulating the price whenever you buy something that looks like it's about to rise, because realistcally you're joining other people that are also buying a ton of the item at max price which would cause the item to go up..

oh and one other thing I've heard them say is that the "trade limits" (which allow you to only buy a certain amount of items per 4 hours, like 25K ores/logs per hour, 100 weapons, 10K arrows, 10K of food, etc...) were put into effect to minimize Price Manipulation but that it still isn't really against the rules since it wouldn't techinichally be Bug Abuse.

personally I do not join in on much price manipulation, I usually just buy items that're traded in vast quantities for as low as possible, then sell for as high for possible - doing this I've gone from 95m-180m cash in one month

Note that I'm not asking whether it's right or wrong, or lame or cool, but whether or not it's against the rules.

so yea just tell me what you think, and... debate :D

No.

It isn't.

Not sure what you expected to hear. I mean you could have just looked it up in the Game Guide if you wanted to know. The rules aren't exactly a secret.

Price Manipulation is not against the rules; Jagex's Rules of Conduct state:

You must not use or attempt to use any cheats or errors which you find in our software. Any exploits which you find must be immediately reported to Jagex through Customer Support.

The Grand Exchange's price-variation mechanism is unarguably not an "error" in Jagex's software; therefore, Price Manipulation is not against the Rules.

is removing the ability to trade what you want against the rules ?

Obviously yes but they did it anyway. :evil: =;

  • 1 month later...

I've searched the RSOF and seen some Forum mods lock threads trying to create price manipulation.

Ironically, though they said "Reread the Code of Conduct", there's nothing in there about price manipulation. I suggest making a query to...oh wait, they stopped doing that  ok...then I'd suggest going on the RSOF and making a thread about "Is Price Manipulation Against the Rules?

Purposefully trying to change the value of items is not allowed.

* Pretending to buy or sell when you have no intention of doing either. Pretending to sell to another player to raise/lower the price

* Telling others to raise or lower the price of an item. 'OMG noob item blah is worth so much more. Sell for this price'.

* Openly telling everyone to raise/lower a price. 'Listen here whip owners, we're going to push the price up to 10 mil join me!'.

* Saying an item is rare when it is not to increase the price.

* Ganging up with other players to raise/lower a price by filling the forum with threads buying/selling for that price.

All of these are price manipulations and are unfair. By using these tactics you are scamming and you will be banned.

You are welcome to sell your items at whatever price you choose, but remember, choosing a high price for an item does not make the item worth that value. The chances are, you will still have the item and push the buyers to another seller who has chosen a more modest price.

If you are unhappy with the price of an item, wait and buy it or sell it when the market is more to your liking.

This was locked for Price Manipulating. It was also locked for naming another players Clan chat. Said player has all ready had several threads locked for this type of thread. I strongly suggest people stop making these type of threads because you are risking a Forum Ban.

Thank you.

yea but A forum mod said that, so it really means nothing... besides even if a Jagex Mod said it, it doesn't mean it's true because different Jagex Mods say different things.

I'm sure those forum mods got it from somewhere though. I'm also pretty sure I've read something (official) about it too. I'm pretty certain it's against the rules.

EDIT: Also, it looks to me like it was two different forum mods who posted those messages. And it's not like they accidentally typed the exact same message referring to the same kind of situation. :P

So, if a Jagex Mod or a Forum Mod said that RWT was against the rules, then you'd go ahead and do it since different Jagex Mods say different things?

-.-

If they say something that concerns the rules, you had better follow them because if that particular mod does the offense review, they won't have sympathy. And who's to say that they don't agree on some things? Are you saying that J mods have different views on EVERYTHING? Even rules?

And wtf about Forum mods? They rox my sox 8-)

First of all, Jagex Mods certainly don't disagree about everything. However, in the case of buyouts there are certainly disagreements between the Mods. One Jagex Mod clearly stated that Buyouts were against the rules because it was essentially bug abuse, but otheres have said that it's against the rules because of scamming, or that it isn't against the rules at all.

And as for Forum Mods, I can't stand those guys, they're just annoying kids that jagex gives a lot of power. They always close my posts saying stuff like "You already have enough replies on this so I locked it" or something else stupid. Or one time they closed my post because i had "dis[bleep]inued items" in it instead of "discontunied" and they said that it could've offended somebody...

Btw I died at mith dragons while writing this post so you better be sorry lol jk :D (got all items back btw, so no big deal.)

Oh and about the Forum Mods, I can't stand them, they always lock my posts just cuz they say "enough people have posted here" so yea they tick me off.

Price manipulation is neither scamming nor bug abuse by definition. It is merely removing the essence of capitalism by removing any competition. That is why is supposedly against the rules. There's a difference between a passive-like monopoly (in which you invent something new and eventually there's some competition from other competitors who have made their own version e.g. Coca-cola and Pepsi) and active-like monopolies (Comcast buying out everything so that they have a monopoly, which I might add engendered a bill from Congress to split it up into separate sections for competition). Monopolies are neither good nor bad, but if people start taking advantage of them, then it becomes price manipulation and bad.

As for the forum mod soap box, in the cases of seemingly unfair forum mod judgments, I believe there is a thread in the RSOF for reporting mods. And there's a policy of two things:

1. I think the page limit is 200 (2k posts) before you "may" (which means DO IT FFS!!!!111!1!) start a new thread of the same subject.

2. If you're just constantly bumping up a topic and no one has replied to it or very little, then you're essentially bumping an old topic, which can get you in at least in a minor amount of annoyance with the mods even here.
