I am going to buy a laptop, but from where?

Featured Replies

Well... as a graduation present, my grandmother is going to buy me a laptop to use at university.

She said that I can get an extremely good laptop... and I can probably spend a few thousand on it.

I just am not really sure where I should get it from. Any suggestions?

Any OS preference? OS X, Windows, Linux? A few thousand will get you pretty much everywhere. :P

Windows for sure :P

I know that I can get pretty much anything. I was looking at the prices for a high end Alienware laptop... within my range, however I'm not sure if I could get something that is pretty much just as good for cheaper or something... I'm also not sure if I even need a laptop that amazing. My theory is why not though, right? ;)

get HP laptop, really good, lasts long

Don't know if I agree with that.

An alienware is literally a waste of money. You can get something just as good (albeit less flashy) for half the price.

I personally have a toshiba that I'm very satisfied with.

Tigerdirect.ca is a good source for laptops.

I would get an Asus laptop, best brand you can have (I personnally have one too) and they beat Alienware laptops hands down.

Umm... This doesn't relate directly to your question, but you might look into buying a desktop and a netbook/cheaper laptop. If you are planning on taking your computer with you to school everyday, a bulky Alienware would be a little much, and the battery life would likely be terrible after several months.

Anyway, that's always an option, one that I wish I would have put more thought into.

Alienware :wall: No, just no. Complete Rip off.

I'm an advocate for Sony VAIO you could could great laptop;the TT series of vaio's are good for on the move: Click. I also found a student saving program: click. I read on the site that the battery life can be up to 7.5 hours, perfect for something like a long lecture :P

Since you're given quite a large price range, maybe buy an okay laptop (that can play decent games) and a netbook or cheap laptop for school, web browsing, etc...

I agree. This seems like the best solutions as it gives you horsepower from the desktop, with a long battery life from the netbook. The laptop littleboy recommended seems nice but I think it's going to cripple you, especially since you're looking for a new computer.

Here's a popular little HP laptop. $999 gets you:

2.0Ghz Core 2 Duo

4Gb of RAM

13" diagonal and 1.5" thick

512MB GPU (dedicated) or up to 2GB shared

An HDMI port (which I personally find nice, since I don't have a TV)

Hypothetical 4 hours of battery

320GB HDD @5,400RPM

And only 5lbs (I was actually considering the MacBook Air for college - weight is important to me.)

Hmm thanks for the advice so far.

A few friends have recommended looking at Dells.

Perhaps a 15 inch or something... still having trouble sacrificing power. I do understand that battery life will be important, especially when I'll be sitting through a lot of classes with it.

I already have a desktop which is decent, but just decent.

I just filed at 20,000+ lawsuit with Dell. So as you might understand, I will be a little biased towards Dell. :P

Just remember: you get what you pay for.

I'm a fan of ASUS personally, although I will say that I do love my gateway FX laptop. Very powerful and was pretty damn cheap for me ($1,100 on sale). I think it's like $1,600 for an upgraded version on newegg now.
