Badassery

While I agree with you about the part of a person who tried putting it out after setting themself on fire, I also disagree with you on another part.

If he lit himself on fire, then just sat there clamly, it shows he has given up on life, and feels he can accomplish no more. Suicide.

In actuality, he probably did accomplish more than what he would've if he just stayed alive. After all it's a very well-known image. While I don't agree with suicide myself, some might consider that an honor much like kamikaze pilots.

Yeah, it got his point across.

Its just that, in my opinion, in order to be badass, it would have had to been those who he was protesting against who done it to him. It would have also got the point he was making come across better. I look at that, and I just see some guy who gave up and lit himself on fire.

I think you should try it sworddude and tell us if you feel badass afterwards.

I don't think it's very badass if the guy dies.

Depends on how defiant he is to those who kill them.

If you can be killed in on of the most painful ways by those who you oppose, and you just sit there not giving into them, its badass.

Isn't it more badass if he kills them and saves himself?

So Leonidas wasn't badass?

I know, I know, 300 stretched the story "a bit", but either way, I'd still say he was pretty badass.

No, he was awesome. Kratos, on the other hand, is badass.

Yeah, but in the case of this monk, his point wouldn't have come across.

It also depends on how he kills them.

Like, he lets them set him on fire, he then attacks them all, severely burning them, and killing them. Then jumping out a window into a pool. Badass.

And yeah, Leonidas was actually pretty badass in the film, though Kratos is even more so. Its like going up to a guy who has a reason to kill you, sticking the finger up at him, then ripping his eyes out.

Does this guy count?

Wim Hof

"In January this year, Wim Hof ran half a marathon (21 km) above the polar circle in Finland. He wore only a pair of shorts and no shoes. The ground (snow) temperature was 35 below. In a few months time, he'll try something along the same line on Everest's north side."

"Good news/bad news from Everest. If you'll remember our strange Danish friend, Wim Hof, he was attempting to scale Everest in shorts using his freakish ability to increase his heart rate and blood flow to his extremities when cold. Kind of the opposite of how it works in me and you. Bad news is he's still alive, and he only made it to 24,278. Still, it's farther then I ever imagined he'd get. And he did it in shorts. So unfortunately he's still part of the gene pool. At least for another year. Because the good news is he's coming back next year to try it again."

WONGTONG IS THE BEST AND IS MORE SUPERIOR THAN ME

#1 Wongtong stalker.

Im looking for some No Limit soldiers!

I'd call him incredibly stupid to put himself at risk like that.

Being badass normally involves defiance or killing. Usually both.

I'd categorize that as 'Awesome' rather than 'Badass'.

shocking that sworddude ignores my quite brilliant advice.

I declare we have rules for badassery.

1) Person must live through his badassness.

2) No luck or guesses. Badass must know what he's doing and what's going to happen when he does it.

3) Person must be badass.

4) No actors or actresses.

5) Must involve manliness.

Change number 4 to no fictional characters. If an actor is off of his job and does something badass he should qualify. Plus you'll get the person who will come in here and post harry potter or something, so the rules would already cover that.

So putting yourself at risk is now not badass?

I think if they die, it can still be badass.

Let's say there's some military squad leader in nam, he and his squad are kidnapped, and tied up. He get's through the rope with his teeth, in one bite, beats the guard to death with his left hand, while untying his squad with his right hand, then takes the guards gun, kills 50 men with the 10 bullets in the clip, then, one surviving VC throws a cooked hand grenade into the middle of his squad. He dives onto the grenade, saving the lives of his entire squad, but losing his own. That's still badass.

Should have been more clear.

True, it can be badass if you risk your life, but it also depends on the why.

The guy was doing it because he thought he could, stupid reason. Not badass.

The type of situation you described. Pretty badass.

I agree that the Finnish Sniper was badass, he was putting his life at risk to protect his country, standing up for his rights.

swordfinalqr7.jpg

@sword

He wasn't commiting suicide to end his life because he couldn't take it anymore. He did it to protest his government. He realized this was the only way to bring attention to it. He didn't just do it because he thought he could.

He brought (more)attention to it without harming anyone but himself. Just like the finish sniper, he was standing up for his rights, his right to practice his own religion and be tolerated.

Badass.
