The Vikings called Iceland "Iceland" because it was habitable, but they wanted it for themselves. So they named the not so habitable Greenland "Greenland" because they thought settlers would go there and perish, leaving Iceland all to the Vikings.

Just remembered doing a writing project on the Vikings in Senior English last year. I never found anything on why they named Iceland and Greenland that way, but they weren't *super* trolls (they still were asses though). My project was focusing on their influence on the English language and ideals (directly and indirectly) of nations that speak the language, so I was slightly expecting the Greenland/Iceland thing yet it never appeared.
