Sabriel is at a girl's school except they also teach magic to girla with lots o' money except magic only works near and across the wall to the north which is a barrier to the Old Kingdom where stuff is all medieval n' shit and then Sabriel finds out that her father is trapped in death (which is a river with seven gates or maybe nine) and he wants her to become Abhorsen in his place which is a long line of bro warrior/necromancer guys who send the dead back into death and other fun stuff with seven magical bells and a Charter-runed sword (the setting has Charter Magic, Free Magic which is evil, and Necromancy) because there's a shitload of evil Free Magic/Necromancy users and hungry, hungry undead both controlled and not.

 

And THEN shenanigans. Involving naked guys and a talking not-really-a-cat.
