You can specialize insofar as you can choose the classes you take in high school, you can choose to be more of a math or science student than an art or english student, but high school can't allow you to just skip out on the classes which very much have an impact on what you do with the rest of your life.

How would English classes, which for the most part are the same thing throughout high school, affect me for the rest of my life?

 

We've learned grammar and writing skills through out elementary and middle school. By high school, it's just repetitive. And even college.

Kindergarten - ~5th grade -- Keep the same. The US does this really well tbh

 

~5th grade - ~7th grade -- Similar to what it is now, but with an option to drop a little bit and pick up a little extra in its place (Ex. Drop a quarter of a year of English for a quarter of a year of math) When you get to the end of this stage, you can drop up to half of a class as long as you replace it with something else.

 

~8th grade - ~10th grade -- Now you're forced to make a choice. If you want to continue general education, you can do that, or you can chose to drop and pick up half a year of certain classes.

 

~11th grade - ~12th grade -- Same as the previous one, except you can drop and entire class as long as you pick up something else in its place.

 

If you follow this system, you will have a few extra years of a class you know you'll need in the future (probably more advanced than AP classes) and won't have to take classes you don't need. Keep post secondary education the same

If you said the same, I want you to go to your Microsoft Word and open up an old essay of yours. Then read it all the way through. Now go to a newer essay, something you wrote in the last year. Read it through. Which was better?

 

And abc, you may never have to explain contemporary poetry, but you may very well have to explain how an engine you've just designed is going to work to your boss, who you are most likely going to think is incompetent. Being able to explain complex ideas is an important skill to have. Plus, from experience, I can tell you that the easiest way to explain something is to draw a parallel to something else, to give an example.

Yeah, basic spelling and grammar is important, but the [bleep]ing essays and analyzing and poetry. That's all a bunch of bull [cabbage]. My spelling and grammar hasn't really changed since I was probably 12 (I type differently, but I knew the mistakes I was making back then (u instead of you)) and you can all understand me just fine

Factual referencing - Who gives a [cabbage] about format? If you know what you're saying, that should be good enough

Not sounding [bleep]ing retarded - If you can get your point across, who cares how you sound?

I agree completely, but I really doubt my boss is going to care if I use a varied vocabulary or reference at least 2 books and one other article. I'm pretty sure "The doohickey moves the doodad" is good enough

Sadly, my writing skills have had not a lot of improvement. It's basically like the right half of my brain is inactive. I'm [bleep]ing terrible at essay writing, I'm not very creative, etc.

I have liked one of my papers of the last two or three years. It was a personal narrative. I liked it, but I felt embarrassed sending it to be proofread by people because it was so personal. Otherwise, most of my papers have been meh to me.

Oh, I have trouble reaching the minimum, don't worry. A bunch of my annoying HS friends always had that problem. I'd read their papers and see so much unnecessary elaboration, things they just put in there so they'd seem smarter and make themselves look better.

This too. It's [bleep]ing retarded. Quality > quantity. Very few exceptions. Papers aren't one of them. It's like they want you to BS as much as you can

I loved the assignments where our English teacher would say "maximum 250 words, but if you know what you're talking about, you'll be done in a sentence." You'd see people at 248 words, and then some at like 30.

So you say you've improved? Good, because I'd much rather hire a 2ish writer than a 1.7ish writer as a mechanical engineer. It means that he probably knows how to explain to me, and to the people who he's working alongside, a much higher amount. It also says that he worked that much harder to get where he is.

I want you to show me a job where you're not trying to sell something. Any job. Now, if you're selling something, shouldn't you be trying to convince people that your product is worth buying? Or that your engine won't explode the jet it's going into?

Factual referencing - Who gives a [cabbage] about format? If you know what you're saying, that should be good enough

This doesn't have anything to do with format. It has a lot more to do with backing up what you say. For example, there's an old website about the pacific northwest tree octopus. About 40% of high school students shown the website say that it's a legitimate site, and not what it is - a website used to prove that not every site on the internet is trustworthy.

"Hey boss, to make this program run, just click the button on the screen and then wait for like 6 minutes and then it'll pop up with a screen and you need to enter in the numbers and then it'll tell you the answer."
