BREAKING NEWS: Japanese legend Misawa dead after in-ring accident

Saturday June 13, 2009 BY Phil Lowe

One of the greatest professional wrestlers of all time has died following a tragic in-ring accident during a Pro Wrestling NOAH show in Japan.

Mitsuharu Misawa, the founder of the Japanese promotion, died after an accident that came from a suplex during a show on Saturday.

Misawa was teaming with Go Shiozaki during the Hiroshima show, taking on Bison Smith and Akitoshi Saito for the GHC tag team championship.

According to reports in Japan, Misawa landed hard on his head after a belly-to-back suplex from Saito and lost consciousness.

A crowd of around 2,300 watched on as doctors and officials unsuccessfully attempted to revive him in the ring.

He was taken to a local hospital but never came back round and was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

Misawa was a national wrestling champion during high school in Japan and enjoyed success in All Japan Pro Wrestling during the 1980s as the second Tiger Mask.

After unmasking, he went on to become the biggest star in Japan during the 1990s.

Following the death of AJPW owner Shohei Giant Baba in 1999, Misawa took over as company president but issues and arguments with owner Motoko Baba, the widow of Giant Baba, led to him quitting the company along with the vast majority of the All Japan roster.

Misawa went on to form Pro Wrestling NOAH, with the promotion staging some of the best shows this decade from a wrestling standpoint - not just in Japan but anywhere in the world.

Mitsuharu Misawa was aged 46.

I don't know him, but I have to say it's pretty tragic.

I feel horrible for the guy that did it, that has to be an indescribable feeling.

mssigqc5.jpgI do English to Japanese and Japanese to English translation for free! Just keep it under 5 sentences, and PM me to use my fluency in Japanese to your advantage!

That blows.

Even fake (kinda) wrestling has some serious consequences.

Dam that sucks....and "Pro" wrestling does have some dangerous moves...with all those flips and stuff that they do. Although I am a fan of the wrestlers that are daredevils and risk there skin just to give us some good entertainment.

Since this topic is still alive... the cause of death has been determined to be severe damage to the spinal chord, not from that one move but from years of punishment and the very physical Japanese style that involves people getting dropped on their neck and head a lot.

Yeah in Japan they take the wrestling seriously and is full of some of the hardest wrestlers you will meet. The amount of times a Wrestler will get slammed as brutally as they would in Japan in America is hardly ever.

This also shows that Wrestling is not just entertainment but how much these people put there bodies on the line to entertain you.

I never really got the whole wrestling is fake debacle. Yeah, there is some exaggeration involved but a lot of the pain you see them go through is very real. I remember one wrestler getting interviewed and some guy said that wrestling was a complete fake. The wrestler slapped that guy in the face and asked, "Was that fake?"

If I remember right that was Roddy Piper that said that.

And it is a correct point. For people to call it 100% fake really should watch an actual match.

Yes I know some of it isint fake.

But a lot is laughable. Especially the plots.

I swear to god the WWE writers are sooo stupid.

As far as I'm concerned WWE is the worst professional wrestling out there at this moment. Its just the same plot over and over.

There's a plot now ?

Didn't know that.

By the way, this wrestler was a sumo wrestler or something else ?

When was the last time you saw a sumo wrestler flip another completely upside down and on his head?
