BloodAngel
Just a heads up to all those who have upgraded to Snow Leopard (Mac OS 10.6) from Leopard (10.5): Reports have been cropping up on the Apple Support forums that users have been losing all their data due to a nasty bug in Snow Leopard, Apple's latest Operating System. Many users are reporting that all settings are being reset and most data is gone, according to iTWire. The problem, can easily be reproduced when a user logs into the 'guest' account, either on purpose or by accident, and when they log back out of the account and back into their normal one, they find that their account has been fully reset with all data wiped and lost - the account is like a brand new one. The home directory still exists under "/Users/username" but is completely empty. Users are reporting that the data is unrecoverable and cannot be found anywhere on the hard drive, and the only way to restore it is if the user has been performing backups on a separate hard-drive. Apparently the problem has been present since a few days after launch, as the forum post dates back to 12th September, but as of yet, Apple has been silent. It seems the only work around at this stage is to disable the Guest account, or at least disable it and then re-enabling it so that it's a native Snow Leopard account. Another suggestion is to create a new account and enforce parental controls, if you really need a temporary account. It's not clear how many users are affected, but it seems like any user who had Leopard before the upgrade, and had the guest account enabled are affected and are at risk. stevepole
Saw this earlier. Wasn't all to surprised to hear there is a bug with the OS. I've been having a lot of issues with my Mac since I installed Snow Leopard onto my MBP.
BloodAngel
The only major problem I've had since upgrading to Snow Leopard is it has completely messed the battery up, but other than that it's running well. But yea I am not surprised something like this happened, it was clear that they rushed it when about a week after the release a patch was made for it. Laura
"We are aware of the issue, which occurs only in extremely rare cases, and we are working on a fix," an Apple representative said in a prepared statement Monday. Still.
tripsis
Wow that sucks. The only problem I've had so far is that twice now when using PhotoShop, I have been randomly logged out.. which really sucks. Anyway thanks for the heads up. I perform daily backups anyway, but it's still nice to know about. - 99 fletching | 99 thieving | 99 construction | 99 herblore | 99 smithing | 99 woodcutting - - 99 runecrafting - 99 prayer - 125 combat - 95 farming - - Blog - DeviantART - Book Reviews & Blog

dsavi
I can barely resist the urge to be gloating and sarcastic. Their advertisements are nearly enough to drive me absolutely insane, with their "I want a computer without any headaches and viruses" crap. I think this counts as a headache and as you might know, they included a virus scanner in Mac OS X Snow leopard. In fact they've been doing that for years, but this is the first time they put it in a home version instead of just the server version. Whoops, looks like I gave in to temptation. obfuscator
Hopefully they get a fix soon. Still, it is nice to see a story out there that shows that macs aren't perfect. The primary purpose of the AV is for Windows, being that it is a server and distributes e-mails to several operating systems.

stevepole
I remember hearing talk about one but I have yet to see or find one in Snow Leopard.
Laura
I've read otherwise. And their advertisements are full of crap anyway. As have I.Update: The Register notes that Apple has simply included information on two Trojan Horses, OSX.RSPlug.A and OSX.Iservice, in one of Snow Leopard's system files, identified to MacRumors as the following: /System/Library/CoreServices/CoreTypes.bundle/Contents/Resources/XProtect.plist While Apple could certainly update this file with identifying information for new threats that arise in the future, there does not appear to be a full-fledged antivirus package with regularly-updated virus definitions deployed in Snow Leopard.Link
depresins
I was very annoyed with how many problems I had with Snow Leopard. As somebody who still wasn't fully converted, it just about turned me away when it couldn't even get through an installation without stuffing up on me. Then I had (mainstream programs, not just little open source things) all sorts of problms with things crashing, wireless networking failing, garageband not working. Then I put in a new SSD and ram and reinstalled and it works sweet

I have the OCZ Vertex 120gb. I was torn between that and the Intel, but the OCZ was in stock(and much cheaper!) on the day so it won out. It's amazing. It's making me consider upgrading some/all of my desktop drives in time for summer (hopefully keep my office cooler!)
