Obama vows to halt US ban on travellers with HIV

Featured Replies

To be honest, I didn't even know such a ban was in place... I'm shocked that something like this was created!

I'm really glad that President Obama has decided to take action and change this (in my opinion) silly law.

The President summed it up quite well when he said,

"If we want to be the global leader in combating HIV/AIDS, we need to act like it."

A step in the right direction - if we want to make any sort of dent in combating/curing this disease, shunning those who have it is far from the right thing for our country to be doing.

Thanks for sharing, Adrenal!

wow that surprised me as well. I had no idea. Glad it's being fixed though.

I suppose though it was hardy ever really enforced much. I can't really see the travel agencies having much access to foreign hospital records or even really going that far out of the way to do background health checks.

Can't stop AIDS unless you quarantine it

Because those attempts have been working so well.

There hasn't been any.

There are, otherwise there wouldn't have been a ban in the first place. Besides, the problem isn't that the infected people aren't quarantined, it's that there isn't a cure.

Good, the ban was brought in through a combination of scaremongering and homophobia - glad it's now being overturned.

Sounds like genuine treatment and cures for HIV might not be too far off anyway.

How would they tell if you got HIV?

Lol, who was the idiot who put it in place in the first place? It's like trying to close your door after all of your pets have already ran outside. So idiotic on so many levels.

Because you catch it from being in the same place as the person?

If you don't have sex with every random person you see you are probably not going to get it.
