Shoe.

Is a sort of we-ran-out-of-time-so-do-this-project-instead sort of art project (we were supposed to do clay, but had only 3 days to do it after 3 snow days). The idea was to choose an object that represented you, draw it, and fill it with other objects that represent you. Then show value and use ballpoint pen. (I <3 my art teacher. She's amazing and pretty much lets you do anything you want as long as it attempts to fulfill the criteria.)

I can guarantee it looks better irl... I really hate my scanner. Any tips on making things I scan not look like complete crap?

I know ballpoint pens are a tricky medium to use, but I feel your drawing is somewhat bland in terms of value (not enough contrast). In short, it's a bit too hard to differentiate the elements of the shoe.

It's a bit too late to change it now, but generally when you start your drawing you'd want to decide which feature should be the most important one (the one the viewer sees first), and then the 2nd, and so on. That's what we call composition.

Right now when I look at it, my eye isn't really drawn to something in particular.

And also be careful about the linework, like here the bottom line of the shoe is a bit wavy and it shouldn't.

Apart from that, it's a cool idea. I'd like to see a shoe like that in real life :P.

ur lucky you have a good art teacher and you also have a very unique style :D

im more into drawing than digital art myself.

lol my art teacher is one of the ones who is always talking about meaningless things. she actually got fired from my school last week because a student made a complaint about her smellin of canibus, they did a search of her office and found the stuff in her draw. -.- so i finnaly know why she was so off subject, she normally started talkin and then started to talk about something completely off subject lol.

anyways, keep up the great work :D

I have to be honest Nad, when I saw that you posted here I was thinking oh boy, here we go again. But like you said, Hawk has made a lot of progress.

Yeah scanners are annoying. Even if it's easier than a camera it makes the contrast really harsh. Go for smoother strokes with the pencil (Assuming it is pencil; The scanner makes it look like pen :| ) and try to get it even. Remember, light, parallel strokes, then change shading direction and add another light layer until it's the right shade.

I've drawn better shoes... I have a nice one scanned somewhere.

Chuck_Taylor_Study_by_hawkxs.jpg

Rather large, but you get the point.

And dsavi, it is pen. I generally don't like pen. Especially scanning it. In contrast to my sig (which is in pencil) it is a lot harder to scan.

@Felix: It's a double-upper Chuck, the other lace is hidden by the shoe; there should be 4. In the beginning I realized I drew the laces kind of wrong (as to how they are in my own shoes) and they ended up kind of weird.

A friend of mine saw it and thought it was a Zelda shoe to begin with; I'm going to continue that theme and do at least a LoZ one, maybe a Mario one later.

I see when you shade that you shade in a strait line? It is better to shade with the shape of the object that you are drawing. And I also notesce that when you do black and white drawing that you cover the whole drawing with shading and completley cover the picture in shadow. Some times it is best to only shade one half of the object and leave the other side white where the light is comming from, and slowly soften the shading, as well as moving with the shape of the object like I said before.

Now this picture was done in a rush and is basic as it gets, but I hope it gets my point across?

I get what you're saying soulless. It always looks weird to me when I leave something empty though, that's why everything's so dark. I try not to shade in straight lines but I usually end up doing so in the end.

There is no "wrong or right" way to draw, art is susposed to be something an individual does to express themselves/enjoy themselves, everyone has their own styles, in my opinion there shouldnt be a wrong or right way at all. Yeah there are guidelines to art such as shading, but the way i draw i hate to use tules, such as the shading rule. because i dont want to fall into the trap of being an artist who doesnt use art to express themselve because then it shouldnt be art. im into charcoal alot, and im quite facinated by abandoned area's/lonely theme's. this is an example of how i like to draw:

and yes my scanner is crap aswell, and i cut off a quater of the left side because it was done on two pages

They aren't, "rules," they're tested methods of getting things to look good. There are no rules in art, which is what I like about it, but if you don't follow the suggestions (e.g. do not shade in only black), then good luck getting your artwork to look good.

You've made a load of progress, I used to think that your drawings....yeah, I avoided posting. Now i'm really pleasantly surprised, that looks really good. I should probably get some of my traditional art up.

Nope all forms of art. Just make sure you post it in your own topic though instead of stealing Hawxks thunder ;)

OT: Hawxks, that looks quite good. What I was going to say has already been said, so I'm just going to leave with a well done :)

My relaxation method involves a bottle of lotion, beautiful women, and partial nudity. Yes I get massages.

  • 2 weeks later...

I know I haven't seen your previous works, but here's something to think about:

-Form/Reference. Have an actual shoe to look at / study. I noticed at the 'mouth' of the shoe has a round appearance, but as you go down the shoe, it flattens. (as if the steamroller stopped halfway and backed off). It has worked for me.

I cannot think of anything more at the moment. Most has been said already that I wanted to say. :3 Quite the interesting project though.

Pen is a !$%?$# for me. Dip-pens especially. However, I love doing ink washes. Especially gestures. :wall: #-o
