Yeah, it's very common. It makes me laugh when it looks like you are hitting another player in the head with your axe and get logs!

I've seen that where people's back is to the tree too, lol.

thats because whenever a player comes into your camera (a map section just loaded for instance), they are ALWAYS facing south unless they are moving , the tree is to the north of them

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

just as you are ALWAYS facing south when you first log in

Standing away from the tree and getting logs is common. I don't know why it happens, it just does.
