Why does everyone want mint now???

I haven't been playing a lot since i got 99 slayer, all i do everyday is Bork, Battlestaffs and kingdom..

 

Today I went to world 2 and wanted to have a look at the items' prices, i noticed everyone wants mints...

 

and i assume the mints means "mint cakes"

 

 

I am lucky enough to have 11 of them when they were 1~2k each, i just place them in bank for fun,

 

but can anyone tell me why have they rose so much ? they are like 28k now,

 

and everyone in world 2 wants mint in their trade..

Lol, another one of these topics. They're a merchanters "currency." I've heard that they (the merchanters) think they'll be the next discontinued item. Plus, no one ever plays the minigame. Just use it to sell junk on RS Forums or.... If you don't want, I'll take them off your hands.

Now that everyone wants them, some more people are actually playing the game. And you also get it as a reward from a dwarf quest. But there is nothing real special about them, except they restore run to 100% now.

Merchanters don't think they'll soon be discontinued, the intelligent ones know they are literally worth nothing and aren't rare. Mint cakes are just a tool used by merchanters as another form of junk, a much more valuable form of junk, making higher priced items much easier to buy. An item is worth what the players value it at, merchanters have joined together placing this item at a high street price in order for them to make their trades easier. As soon as this form of agreement fails (people stop valuing the item), the item fails. A mint cake is nothing more than currency.

 

Think of it like an American Dollar. As paper the dollar is worth nothing, as an idea it is worth one dollar. We created it because it is much easier to deal with paper rather than deal with items such as gold or other precious materials. Similarly, it's much easier to deal with a few mint cakes rather than 400K willow long bows.

Exactly. It's a mania, just like ones that have occured in the real world throughout history. (Look up the tulip bulb bubble in Holland in the 17th century, for example.)

 

They are used to circumvent trade restrictions on the GE, but the fact is that at any time Jagex could make them untradeable (like lots of minigame rewards) or make them easier to get.

 

Also, the supply of them is increasing as more players start to do the minigame.

It's not like the all-powerful czars of world 2 got together and said, "Hey, let's make some random [cabbage] really overpriced and get the entire Runescape population to follow along." I'm sure a lot of you think it's like that, but it's not... People will continue to use it as a form of collateral as long as it's under priced, which it will be for a long time. That goes for any item. There's nothing wrong with using an item other than GP as a medium of exchange, so I don't know why everyone's [bleep]ing about mint cakes.

It may be underpriced for it's rareness, but as far as a useful item goes it can be easily replaced my a few doses of super energies. It's only as valuable as people accept it to be. If people need some random item to be valued as junk in order to partially bypass the trade limits (Which may be legitimately restricting in many situations, don't get me wrong) then hey, whatever, it itself is of little use to the actual game however.

Just like Easter Eggs/Pumpkins can be replaced with Tuna...? Mint Cakes are hard to obtain very quickly, so therefore they have a high price tag. Since when has usefulness translated directly into a higher price? Do you know why ZGS costs more than a BGS? Please guess.
