post locking

Recommended Posts

There are occasions when crew have made decisions without allowing further input from the users of the board and I'm curious as to why the posts are locked so quickly. I think there should be more time for discussion on a few items. I know that the crew will still have final say on items going up on the site, but sometimes their decisions are bad ones and we should be allowed to share why.

A huge amount goes on behind the scenes in the Crew that users do not see. Believe me, I'm sure they know what they're doing.

Of course, if you have problems with crewbie locking a thread, you can always PM the crewbie in question.

Of course we make wrong decisions every now and then and in my eyes, you're free to make a new topic to discuss our decision. However, please remember there's a difference between "hey this is a really cool and helpful idea" (users perspective) and actually developing the idea and keeping it up-to-date with the Jagex updates (crew perspective).

When everything's been said and done, more has been said than done.

For crew, there is a few different "types" of user posts. You have submissions, confirmations, regular comments and suggestions. Each is handled differently and is more of an acquired skill the longer the crewbie is around. All in all, if you disagree with a lock, send a pm to the crew leader, cowman_133. It isn't taken as a bad thing as long as the pm is constructive.

The same goes for mods, if you disagree with a lock, pm the mod or an admin. :)

This. Only occasionally do I ever get PMs from people disagreeing with locking decisions, but when I do the move is often reversed. we are people too - reasonable questions will be responded to reasonably.

The idea is to get the topic marked as done so that people can see we're actually doing something with the stuff they submit. It is also easier to see if the topic is ready to hit the archive if its locked. If I see a user posted last, I probably won't move it when I'm cleaning the forum out. If we left everything open for additional discussions:

(a) The forum will look busier and it will look like we aren't using the stuff people send in - which is not the case.

( b ) We will forget about the topics and they won't end up in the archive - Forum looks cluttered

( c ) And of course if some things are not for discussion or just simply cannot happen, there is little need to discuss it more than it was already discussed.

And as was mentioned, nothing is stopping you from starting another topic to give us more information nor from PMing me if you disagree with a change that was made. I've only gotten a couple requests like that from you - If you have more I'd like to hear about them.

This of course only applies to the Submission forums and not other forums when a Mod locks a topic for breaching forum rules.

I understand about behind the scenes decision making...I think most crew know that.

My problem is that there can be no open discussion, especially when I also know that sometimes, there hasn't been any real substantive discussion behind the scenes. I know crew has things they focus on and have goals and plans, but sometimes little things are found that need consideration.

For example: the recent discussion about growing times for calquats. While we all remember that Jagex had posted guidelines and then removed them, if Tip.It is going to have guidelines, then shouldn't they start at (at least) the lowest growing time known? As it's a guideline, it is not that Tip.it is saying it's even the average time. In fact, they should probably be round hours (especially since we all know that perfect growing times are almost impossible). In fact, I worked with the crew on wording of something like that for the Farming guide.

I realize there are other factors to consider on post closing, but I feel like the current policy needs a little tweaking. Close and move them to completed if you must and trust that the few people who don't know or realize where their post went will find it. Otherwise, leave it unlocked for a day or something? I don't think creating more posts is really what you want, is it? I mean, already there could be some real consolidation of threads on the same subject.

I also realize that it's my own opinion on how things could be run more smoothly. I don't think it's without merit, though.

We do not close and move them to completed. They're closed and after a few days to a week, they're moved to completed. Again, if we leave it unlocked a day, it'll probably get lost within the forum and make the forum more cluttered than necessary. I'd rather have more legit posts than several completed topics floating around for discussion that isn't normally necessary after a crew member posts.

It seems to me this entire thread is surrounding something that happens only occasionally and within crew forums only. If you have anything specific that you think we need to re-check, please PM me with this information. I can't see what we're doing now changing as its not really a procedure - people just do it that way.

I will say the speed of locking things, imo has increased quite a bit lately.

Yep...

My issue is that sometimes I don't want to PM...it's too personal for me. I'd rather comment in general. If that's what they want, then some of the mistakes or issues that are seen won't get reported immediately, because while a reply feels quick and easy, a PM feels like it has to have more time spent on it. I don't spend a lot of time on here and don't want to. I don't think my time is appreciated here.

I had always felt the other way around. While PM's are kept between you and another person, public posts are there for everyone to see so you have to be more careful with what you write.

There's no need to get defensive and say "your time isn't appreciated". The fact you've already had 4 different staff posting here shows that we do care about your opinion. And they're telling you what you can do if you want to get heard.

While you may feel the other way around, I think there is great safety in public forums. I've got nothing to hide and PMs are just not in the spirit of the forums. I wasn't defensive, either. I don't really see how it could be interpreted that way. You are entitled to your opinion, of course. As usual, I'm not alone in how I feel about this, but it seems like those in power feel like it's a minority.

Reading through this thread, it seems you are making a mountain out of a mole hill. I don't understand why you cannot send a private message to a crew member asking about the topic being locked, especially when there isn't a defined 'spirit' of a forum. I feel the current system works well for crew, they definately know what they are doing and I am sure if a problem occurred, they would handle it reasonably. As the phrase goes, if it's not broken, don't fix it. You've been told you can PM a crew member if you disagree with their lock, and that doesn't seem to be asking much in my eyes.

Just my two pennies.

especially when I also know that sometimes, there hasn't been any real substantive discussion behind the scenes.

Crew have private forums, so I am pretty sure you would be unaware of to what extent they discuss things behind the scenes.

I understand you might feel that a post has been locked prematurely, but I don't understand why you consider yourself above sending a pm. It's how everyone else works, there's no need to make an exception for you just because you only want to make a "general comment".

Sports guy, I know you can support your opinion all day but there is a time and a place. If you feel something is wrong, a threads fine. Repeating a thought over and over again in a thread with subtle hints of past isn't. Lots has changed over time and if you have a thought, again pm the crew leader.

I think this very thread should follow the Irony about it and be locked before anything bad happens or gets misinterpreted.. Seems at this rate its starting to turn into aggression towards each other and we really don't want that.

As usual, people are getting worked up. Can't I disagree without assumptions?

I do know what goes on behind the scenes, by the way.

You are more than welcome to disagree - anyone is for that matter. I'm not trying to force opinions down people's throats, but just trying to help you understand the reasoning behind what is done in the Website Corrections forum. As I'm sure you know, not everybody's suggestions can always be implemented, regardless of how strongly one (or many) may feel about it.

I have already explained why we do what we do in the Web Corrections forum to mark threads complete and that it will not be changed. You are free to disagree with the crew's opinion on this matter, but the bottom line is this policy will not be changing. It is not possible to cater to everybody's needs on a forum - what is in best interest for the majority of the users (seeing stuff get done) and the hard working crew is what we'll stick with. Again, there is always the option to create a new topic or to PM me or another Crew member. You're always welcome to do so.

As ironic as this sounds, I feel this discussion is not going to go anywhere other than in circles with tempers snowballing up to the point where we will end up shouting at each other. I also feel this discussion is getting more and more directed towards me and the Crew/Staff and not so much a discussion between the users. Your question has been answered and we are now moving into an increasingly private discussion. By your definition of a Private Message, one would be most suitable now if you wish to continue this discussion.

Thanks,

~Cowman

I'm locking this thread as you've been given many great answers to your question and I don't see the point of this discussion continuing.

I would suggest private messaging me or any other admins/mods if you have any problems.
