Water, Pop, Soda, Sports Drinks

Featured Replies

What I would really like to know is why there is a large misconception that diet pop and/or all artificial sweeteners are bad for you. Do you think this is true, and why?

And also why everyone thinks 'health drinks' (like Vitamin Water, Propel, general flavored water type things) are good for you.

I'll wait a bit before I add my opinion. But this is for general discussion of what to drink, I guess. We definitely know that if you stop drinking sugared pop, it helps you lose weight.

Artifical sweetner is bad because it's chemicals and bad stuff. I has a laxative effect for crying out loud.... Why put it in your body. Apparently I can make you put on weight...

Those sports drinks, I suppose if you are doing something very demanding and long lasting, the sugar and electrolytes can be good for you. However, the vitamin water is over hyped in my opinion.

My relaxation method involves a bottle of lotion, beautiful women, and partial nudity. Yes I get massages.

They aren't necessarily bad for you, they just aren't as effective as water. Vitamin water is good, its got vitamins in it ;). But you shouldn't need a specific water to get your RDI of nutrients.

The only drink I'll touch other than water is gatorade and that is to replenish salt and sugar levels after a match.

Chocolate milk is fantastic, by the way.

Good recovery drink, too.

catch it now so you can like it before it went so mainstream

Propel is very good for you b/c it has added vitamins, although its bad for your teeth if you sip it.

Im addicted to water, seriously its like my crack I can not stop drinking it, even when im well hydrated.

But honestly, Gatorade makes me more thirsty, does nothing for me.

I dont know why everyone goes for these chocked full sugar bottles instead of water...

Because people believe the added vitamins, sugar and salt make it better than plain water. If they were eating correctly, they shouldn't need it, except in a recovery situation.

Diet drinks contain Phenylalanine which can sometimes induce a laxative effect and can act as an appetite supressant. Diet drinks and gum are full of it, which is why diet drinks are so popular. They have very little nutritional impact on people, make them feel a little bit fuller and taste (in some peoples opinion) better than water.

I swear we are all going to die from Phenylalanine one day. If I have to much Phenylalanine, my face starts to break out and go red... Oh, and the farting, from the laxative effect. Charming eh? Hasn't happened for a while now, but still.

Try spending 6 months on it as a supplement, while being told to drink caffeine free diet coke instead of coke.

That's odd because I wrote a whole paper about artificial sweeteners and never once read (except for sucralose) that they have a laxative effect.

I know there's an amino acid deficiency where people can't digest aspartame/phenylalanine, have you looked into that, Ouchy?

I figure if it's going to kill me, it's going to kill me and there's not much I can do about it. My dad's been drinking Diet Coke for years and isn't dead so...

How does drinking diet pop make you gain weight?

Mah favorite sports-type drink: Powerade Zero. Tastes amazing, no carbs, no calories.

I am certain there is a study that showed drinking diet coke caused people to actually gain MORE weight than those binging on the real thing. If i ever come across it I will post it here.

I believe that it is more the lifestyle behind many of the people who drink the soft drinks than the actual drink ("if i have a diet coke i will double up on the fries" sorta deal), but you cannot deny that whether 'diet' or not, there is still a hell of a lot of crap put into many of them which doesn't help you at all.

A fun fact I learned from Biology: while the tongue is temporarily satisfied by the sweet taste of a diet soda, the brain isn't fooled. It still wants calories for energy. This could cause said person to eat more as well as having a relatively unhealthy drink.

Personally I don't drink any soft drinks, used to drink a hell of a lot of coke when i was like 13/14 then stopped and within a few months i looked a lot better off. Nowadays I only drink water and alcohol, arguably as bad as soft drinks but hey, I'm a student and if the shoe fits... :P

Chocolate milk is wonderful :P

I do also like Vitamin Water quite a bit. I do occasionally drink soda but never to cool off or quench my thirst. I only drink it to compliment a meal.

Ever read the label on a pack of gum? I don't know about your country, but it mine they all say "Contains Phenylalanine; May have a laxative effect if consumed in large quantites" Just about every product in Australia containing Phenylalanine has the same disclaimer on it.

Well I try and stay away from all "soda" kind of drinks, they're terriable for you and I'm not really a fan of the taste. So I don't even have them, let alone the diet options.

I buy the occasional Powerade when I play cricket, because spending 5 or 6 hours in the sun you need the hydration.

And apart from water, I find the best thrists quencher is cold milk.

OK, quite simple.

Sucrose is death.

The effects that artificial sweeteners have on humans is very poorly documented, as they are a relatively recent phenomenon.

Artificial sweeteners will likely cause a insulogenic response, essentially having the same effect on your body as sugar. Vs. Hyperglucemic....

Anything that a 5 year old can't pronounce the ingredients of (unless it's foreign, obviously) shouldn't be consumed.

Because they satisfy our need to search for energy-dense foods.

The thing with anything and everything used to replace natural products is simple: phytochemicals. we don't know what these biologically active compounds actually do, but we get them in fruit and veg everywhere. We don't know if the composition of these is important, how they interact, or what health benefits they have.

simply put: we are addapted to nature, we don't really know how nature works, so we can't emulate it. Of course some things are very well tested, but artificial sweetners etc. have not been tested. This area of food science is developing quickly: sterilan is being refined to loose its liquirshy taste, etc. these things haven't been tested. It may be smart ot be better safe than sorry, when we don't know the consequences.

generally, the only dietary advice that is official, is that most westerners get too little vitamin D. any other supplements are not recommended for the general population, because we don't need them. why take more than neccessary, when we know overdosage of "healthy things" often have negative health effects?

water and healthy eating just seems so safe. Electrolytes / sports drink only for competition. That's what the professionals do, don't they have good advice?

A lot of professionals don't even consume sports drinks: it's just water in Gatorade bottles, and most of the "benefits" of consuming "enhanced" water/sports drinks can be had by adding a bit of rock salt. (Yes, believe it or not.) or just consuming them in a pure form.
