January 28, 201016 yr I open up an avi file but i can only hear audio, and the video part is just a bunch of colourful lines going back and forth. Any reason for this? I think it's because I might have uninstalled something when I was cleaning up the computer a couple days ago of useless programs, so any idea what program it is? Or are there better media players out there that I can download for free?

January 28, 201016 yr Codec packs often cause as many problems as they solve. I suggest you download GSpot and see which one codec you need. Just open the video file in GSpot, click 1 under MS A/V to see what your system expects. After you install the proper codec, you can click 2 to see if it works. February 4, 201016 yr CCCP + VLC + DviX = playing almost anything I come across Never had to use the k-lite codec pack but it seems useful. It wouldn't surprise me if it actually fixed some mystery codec problems I have had for work...
February 5, 201016 yr I used to be a solely VLC guy, until I tried Media Player Classic Home Cinema. With the exception of broken files it plays everything that VLC does, and it seems to handle HD files better. Plus a better interface (awesome having only a 2 pixel border with always on top setting to watch something while browsing the net at the same time).
