Trouble with Window media player?

Featured Replies

I open up an avi file but i can only hear audio, and the video part is just a bunch of colourful lines going back and forth. Any reason for this? I think it's because I might have uninstalled something when I was cleaning up the computer a couple days ago of useless programs, so any idea what program it is? Or are there better media players out there that I can download for free?

Get the k-lite codec pack and Windows Media player will play anything you want.

Edit: If you want another media player, VLC.

I prefer VLC player.

Last time I heard CCCP was the best codec pack.

VLC should play anything you want straight up.

I use CCCP (a collection of filters but notably containing the ffdshow video decoder) and Media Player Classic Homecinema with the CoreAVC H.264 decoder.

Codec packs often cause as many problems as they solve.

I suggest you download GSpot and see which one codec you need. Just open the video file in GSpot, click 1 under MS A/V to see what your system expects. After you install the proper codec, you can click 2 to see if it works.

Lol, Indeed! So many of them are really trojan horses...

I don't know, but I've never had any problems with K-lite, and it's pretty light too.

CCCP + VLC + DviX = playing almost anything I come across

Never had to use the k-lite codec pack but it seems useful. It wouldn't surprise me if it actually fixed some mystery codec problems I have had for work...

I used to be a solely VLC guy, until I tried Media Player Classic Home Cinema. With the exception of broken files it plays everything that VLC does, and it seems to handle HD files better. Plus a better interface (awesome having only a 2 pixel border with always on top setting to watch something while browsing the net at the same time).
