Anyway, I want to know from people how reliable Demonoid.com is. A friend recommended it to me when I said I got a virus from the Pirate Bay. How safe is it, in general? Because from the Pirate Bay I got a virus just by clicking a link to the file page (but not actually downloading the file).

I doubt Pirate Bay actually gave you the virus but Demonoid is probably safer since you have to be a member to download torrent files and upload. I've personally have never had trouble with either site.

Hoe can I safely scan it without actually opening it?

Demonoid is pretty much an open tracker so just take caution like you would any other tracker.

I've never got a virus from any torrent file, and I download a [bleep] ton of stuff (getting close to the 3TB mark on one of my torrent clients). Mostly I get the files from TPB, never any problems. I doubt you got a virus from just visiting a web page either, that is very unlikely. Sure some ads might be able to do that but they would be blocked fairly quickly.

 

Demonoid is as safe as any other public site/tracker. Check comments, check uploader, scan the files yourself if you are really worried.

Some clients will let you automatically scan stuff when you're done downloading it, depending what clients you use. Also, as a general rule, the more 'popular' something is the less likely it's going to be dodgy.

I'm using Firefox, that does a little scan...

 

Tbh, The Pirate Bay always seemed a bit dodgy to me, whether it be all the sex-ads, or just the fact that there were so many torrents - I chose mostly to only download from 'Trusted' Users (only really downloaded like 3 things btw, and 2 had viruses - one was blocked).

 

I think I'm leaning more towards Demonoid, as it seems less anonymous. But again, can I ensure that something is clean without fully exposing myself to it?

Anyhow I still don't understand how you managed to get two viruses from there. I've got hundreds, possibly even thousands of torrents off of that site and never got a virus. A good tip is if you are looking for a tv show don't download an [Caution: Executable File] :wink: .

Only music for me, really.

 

One virus was blocked almost instantly, and I stopped the download. Another time I opened the page and my blocker said it had detected, but couldn't delete the virus. Pornography on my pc the next day also gave a bit of a clue :wink:

 

Gone now though, my dad is pretty handy with computers.

I'd reccomend using Demonoid because people leave comments and it's more tightly knit.
