Deleting posts.

Recommended Posts

Why not delete an account? Half the time users return after requesting their account to be deleted, so there is no point in deleting an account.

Why not let users delete their posts? They could post something offensive, and within moments of the target person reading, delete it. If you post something, you should be able to stand behind it. The inability to delete merely create an incentive not to post something you will regret.

I see no reason for users to be deleting their accounts/posts.

I disagree with deleting posts. It's easy to set, but it just won't be done. There is no reason to. Even if moderators disapprove of a post, they don't delete it, they simply split it off or move the topic out of public view.

In other forums it doesn't cause any problems and in the moderation sense its equivelant to editing.

I would assume these other forums you speak of are much smaller than Tip.It or they do not have the need to keep records of moderation.

Deleting is not equivalent to editing - there is still remnants of a post being there, so if a user or a mod doesn't understand how the posts following the edited one doesn't make sense, they could assume the edited post contained the information necessary to make sense of it. If it is deleted, there are no remnants of a post and it is like it never existed. You cannot assume there was a post somewhere accurately.

Theres two problems with allowing users to delete their posts:

1) If you get hacked, someone can sabotage your posts, and if there cruel and you live in Blogscape, delete your entire blog without any way to restore all the images, links, text etc.

2) Archive wise, there's also links to certain posts, topics etc. If they just magically deleted themselfs, there's a chance it could cause quite alot of errors abound the place, Think of it like working at a construction site you decide to leave the place and take 4 bricks from the structure that you put in it. Sure, 4 bricks might not do so much, or it could do this:

I think basically because its a 'new concept' everyoens terrified of it.

"New concept"? I believe I remember seeing this suggestion back when we were on phpBB2.

No ones afraid of a new concept. We just don't see any need for it, there's no reason to delete posts. If you don't want people to see your posts, you shouldn't have posted them.

I don't see the need to allow everyone to delete their posts. The moderators here do an excellent job of keeping on top of things and deleting what is necessary. I've been on other boards where people can delete their posts and it simply confuses things when someone tries to read the thread afterward.

Hextriplet, if you're that worried about someone going through your posts and making a personal profile of you (although why someone would do that is beyond me) there's a simple solution: don't post personal information. That's rule #1 if you don't want people to know about you. This is the internet where anyone can read anything ever posted/written/blogged/[bleep]ed about.

Besides, you said it yourself that people can only look at the last 200 posts they made. That's less than 10% of your overall post count (plus who knows how many that didn't get added to your post count). Even if you were able to delete your posts, there's no way you could delete them all. Short of spending the next year scouring every last corner of every thread in the forum, that is.

We have the ability to edit them, why isn't that enough? If you're unhappy with something you say edit it. A user deleting their post inst going to make people forget what they read....if it was of any importance.
