Deleting posts.

Featured Replies

We should have the ability to delete our own posts.

Heres a picture of it bieng done on another forum.

No we shouldn't.

TIF's moderation process requires that users can't delete their posts, as the posts that moderators "delete" are simply moved to another forum. I think of it as yet one more incentive to think before I post.

It won't effect it at all.

A post can be edited to say nothing anyway so that means that the moderation process will be unaffected.

If they delete it then the post would simply be gone.

It seems to me you have eyes on changing tip.it's moderation policy. Therefore the onus is on you to provide reasoning for such.

I don't get it; are you saying no because you don't want any change in the tip.it moderation policy, this idea won't change the tip.it moderation policy.

Why should users have the ability to delete their own posts? I fail to see any actual reasoning to why it should be enabled.

I personally don't think it should be enabled. If you have something to say, you should be able to stand behind it.

Right now the policy is that no one has the ability to delete posts, not even moderators. If you're suggesting a significant change, it would be nice to provide some reasoning rather than making one sentence posts.

And @Saru

No one deletes posts on this board. It's bad moderation practice to delete anything. If users could delete their posts at will, they would delete them in an attempt to hide actions, disrupt threads and the like. It contributes to the overall flow of the board to limit that.

Ok say I want to leave the board - I would be happy to delete all of my posts manually but I can't access all of them.

Now, for disrupting threads - you just delete the post as you can edit it out; whats the difference?

For changing moderation, what difference does it make anyway - A person can delete there posts, a person can also edit stuff out of there posts.

An edited post is still there, a deleted post is not.

Why would you want to delete your 2.5k posts upon leaving this board, and why would the admins possibly want 2.5k posts to suddenly disappear?

also, with an edited post, i'm sure moderators can see the edit history, so the information will still be there, just not for the general public.

They can't, well atleast I think they can't.

I want to delete my 2.5k posts upon leaving this board due to the fact that I don't want people making a profile of me through this board.

Secondly why do admins want to keep them and why does it matter when a person wishes to delete the posts.

^^This doesn't really make sense.. If you want your account delete and all your post hypothetically someone would be able to create a new Hextriplet account and post as you.

We aren't going to enable the delete function just so you would be able to delete your personal history upon leaving these forums. Thats just silly imo.

I meant a social profile Stevepole.

This forum is not allowing us in any way to delete our history.

We cannot view all of our posts, we can't delete any of our posts and we are not allowed to have our acount deleted - WTF?

meatlover.png

Just like in real life, what you do doesn't go away.

Admins keep posts as evidence. Let's say you decide to post pornography, they will ban you. However, they will keep the post as a reference, and as proof of the offence. It's just good forum management.

I've still yet to see a valid reason for letting users delete their posts. There's no good reason to.

This.

As you said Hextriplet, it's not much different from editing posts. If you want to remove your posts, just edit them. However, the benefit that WE have over users editing posts vs. deleting them is that edited posts are much easier for us to keep track of. Even if the original content of the post is no longer there, at least posts that follow can still make sense and we can clearly see that a post once WAS there.

I do want to edit my posts and i'd be happy to edit my posts but due to this forum using IBP we can't view all our posts, only the last 200.

meatlover.png

I still don't get it. And even if the feature was available, would you seriously expect to go through every single post and delete it manually? Because that's what it would entail.

The concept of having the delete feature has no tangible positives and just so many negatives, since it could cause nightmares for moderation and could disrupt chat flow and discussion ect.

I edit for the [Tip.It Times]. I rarely write in [My Blog]. I am an [Ex-Moderator].

  • Author

In other forums it doesn't cause any problems and in the moderation sense its equivelant to editing.

I do expect to go through all my posts and delete them.

I think basically because its a 'new concept' everyoens terrified of it.
