Romy
Should Fathers Day be offensive to mothers? That's a good point (not that I was at all offended by man day). It isn't a good point, because the offensive part is that it encourages certain sexist and chauvinist "actions", or classifies those as unsuitable for women, and suitable for men. It is a joke, yes, but that joke has impact.  I'm really only saying that to clear it out of the way and explain, not argue. Giordano
There's no need to explain when everyone already understands it as a joke. "The cry of the poor is not always just, but if you never hear it you'll never know what justice is."

boyzloveme15
Just more evidence of the gross dominance of what is "manly" in our patriarchal society. What does it mean, exactly, to do manly things or be "manly"? These aren't "manly" activities, they're just part of our sexist culture to drive home the point that man = macho masculinity. Completely agree. Even if it's "just a holiday". i cant beleive yall would say that. thru out history men have done so much and dey still do. dey work all day and som men lyke my dad come home and cook dinner and clean the dishes. giv em som damn credit. specially cuz girls lyke me steal dey credit cards/debit cards wit tthe money day work hard for and spend it all on clothes 4 me lolololl. all dat hard work 4....me! the most important girl in the whole wide world!!! u can control my tip it account, but youll never control how fine i am! There is no offensive part until you bring up your own preconceptions on what you deem as a "man". It isn't called Beat Your Wife Day. It's only Man Day. You hear the word "man" and then sexism is the first thing that comes to your mind? Yeah, who's the real sexists here? PS: This is to Magekiller. Weren't you the guy defending Black History Month? lol
magekillr
Should Fathers Day be offensive to mothers? That's a good point (not that I was at all offended by man day). It's not really a good point, because I already refuted it in one of my first posts: For example, why isn't "Spend extra time with your family" on the list? Is being a good father not manly enough for you? It has nothing to do with hating men, or even masculinity. It's about pushing a narrow-mindedness of what it means to be a man, making things such as going to plays, watching musicals, dancing ballet, etc on the lower scale of what it means to be a man. Put simply, this "joke" of a holiday is indeed just that: a joke in how stupid it is. What's not a joke, however, is where it stemmed from: a tough guy attitude of testosterone that is the result of a society dominated by the patriarchy. That is my and romy's issue with it. I haven't seen any women posting on this other than her, btw.

Is being a good father not manly enough for you? That refuted my point that holidays shouldn't be offensive to the opposite of what they represent? Umm, how about come up with something a little less... non sequitur? And what those Facebookers deem as manly is irrelevant anyways. If someone wants to celebrate Man Day by spending time with kids and going to plays, who exactly is stopping them? What it means to be a man is completely open to interpretation. Just because your neighbors put an angel on the top of their Christmas tree doesn't mean they're dissing the star on top of yours. (By the way, they actually did mention being a good father as a manly activity.) Maybe you're just reading too much into the "frolic through the fields like a nancy" part. I thought that was an obvious hyperbole used to give an opening to the minefield joke. What's not a joke, however, is where it stemmed from: a tough guy attitude of testosterone that is the result of a society dominated by the patriarchy. That is my and romy's issue with it. And I suppose yo mama jokes came from a bunch of angry fathers who needed to put mothers in their place. It's humor. The main intent is to cause laughter - not to spread hatred. You think that the whole pro-life campaign exists only because of sexism (even though there are plenty of women out there who are pro-life and there are plenty of pro-life arguments that have absolutely nothing to do with gender). You think that if someone uses the common phrase, "Cry like a little girl," they are a sexist. And now you think anything that has the word "man" in it is fueled by sexism. When are you going to stop? Holy crap, man. (I'm not offending you by calling you that, am I?) and i dont remember anyone sayin dat men hav 2 go out and buy playboys and beer. Precisely. This "hostility for women" only comes from mage's preconceptions of "manliness" - the very thing he is arguing about with sexism against women. So in a nutshell, he is allowed to use generalizations against men, but the second anyone else does that to women, they are a bigot. Ironically, the most sexism I've seen on this site comes from him. [Edited this post for the last time. I promise.]
Romy
The "Man Day" is an organized day that is supposed to be celebrated by many, and show what is manly and what isn't - even if it's in the form of a joke. Men should be fishing, men should be drinking lots of beer and play sports, men should be fighting, men should be eating meat, etc, etc. Obviously, no one would stop any woman from doing these things, but it does increase the polarity between what exists, and what should exist.  If that day gains any popularity - it will have impact, even if it's "just humor". International Women's Day (IWD) is marked on the 8th of March  Women were treated like objects and worse for a very long time. You can argue the day is deserved. But men were not oppressed like women were. We've always been on top. No pun intended. Men? not so much, we don't need a day "Any people anywhere, being inclined and having the power, have the right to rise up, and shake off the existing government, and form a new one that suits them better. Does being born a man give me special privileges? If you prick a woman, does she not bleed like a man? Are we not all created equal?  To dedicate a day to promote misogynistic views as this thread displays seems kinda counter intuitive. You seem to miss the part of my argument where days are typically awarded to those oppressed by a majority in history. You don't see White History month, yet you see Black History, and Hispanic Heritage Month. Women were beat down as slaves and owned like property for thousands of years, being used for pretty much domestic labor, breeding, and trophys (unless it's sparta, then they shaved womens head's and only saw them in the dark).  So to say men - need a mans day to be "equal" is absurd because honestly, Men are still in a position of dominance in society when it comes to wages and other things.   So while I work, and work hard enough to get glowing annual evaluations, I don't feel i'm deserving of a day. "Any people anywhere, being inclined and having the power, have the right to rise up, and shake off the existing government, and form a new one that suits them better. boyzloveme15
I'm not a father, I've done nothing to deserve a day.   so ur sayin dat if ur not a father u dont seserve a day? wat about the abusive neglectful fathers? not every father deserves to celebrate fathers day yet they all can.  Are we not all created equal?   well dat sepends on ur religion, but im not gonna go there. but i kno a lot of ppl on here beleive in evolution, but i bet dey all open presents on christmas. their not Christians, they dont seserve a day.  You seem to miss the part of my argument where days are typically awarded to those oppressed by a majority in history.   i dont need ppl 2 pinpoint my oppresion in the past. i dont deserve a womans holiday cuz i myself wuz never oppressed. in fact, im sure most of the oppressed woman are all dead now. we should remember it so it never happens again, but we dont need to bring it up every day. i dont lyke 2 think dat i hav laws protecting me cuz i can hold my own. u can control my tip it account, but youll never control how fine i am! Racheya
I agree with Das. Men still aren't equal to women and there is still oppression of women across the world. Men *don't* need a day when they already run the country. Just take a look at your governments, how many women are there? Look at the CEO's of companies, how many women are there? While I don't think patriarchy is as powerful as it once was, there is a *reason* why Women have a day, to celebrate independence from being slaves to men. Men don't need that, they were never slaves. I edit for the [Tip.It Times]. I rarely write in [My Blog]. I am an [Ex-Moderator].
