I'm not going to bother updating to 4.0. I can do everything I want to do on my jailbroken 3.1.3, including all of the new stuff available in 4.

Anyways, i'm still contemplating whether I should drop 700$ on an iphone and have the freedom to switch providers (if I ever do research abroad then by being signed with a contract i'll be doomed) or save some money by singing a 3 year contract with Telus, I haven't had any trouble from them for 4 years.

I did, but I'm moving soon and wanted the phone to last me through the long trip. The colour was a minor thing and while I would have liked the white, the black does suits me just fine.

Atleast give the damn background wallpaper and the accelerometer lock for the 3G phones and 2G iPod Touches, how hard and memory consuming would that be?

Moore's law counts for RAM too. Computing power was probably the wrong phrase, I was referring to transistors on a circuit.

I don't understand, then. 128MB of RAM in a phone was great three years ago. In fact, it was downright unheard of. Now the iPhone 4 has 512MB. I don't understand how you're saying that Moore's law plays a part in addition to Apple crippling their technology.

Apple should be trying to get as close to the inexpensive limits of technology as possible, currently modelled by Moore's law, since they're selling their phones as such. Let's assume that 512MB of RAM in a phone is reasonably close to the inexpensive limits of technology and give Apple the benefit of the doubt. That means that two years ago, at the time that the 3G was developed, it should have had 256MB of RAM, instead of 128MB. Four years ago, 128MB of RAM in a phone would have been close to the inexpensive limit of technology. Instead, a year later, the original iPhone is released with 128MB of RAM. It was just behind the times of what is possible. Note the assumption that was we have right now is the upper limit, because it probably isn't.

 

 

 

This is the desired effect of Apple's strategy of developing the generations of iPhone. They held back on the hardware in the first place to make it seem as if they're progressing faster than everyone else. It's akin to supermarkets putting unreasonably high prices on certain products and never advertising it, then cutting those prices to a merely reasonable value and then slapping a '60% OFF' advertisement campaign to give the impression that the price is actually really cheap.

Every company does this. Intel does it with their roadmaps, Samsung does it with their NAND flash, LG with their displays, etc. They could have put 256MB of RAM in the 2G, but it was already what, $600 (w/o subsidy)? It's like the people pleading for a 64GB iPhone model at $300 - it's not going to happen without a bump in price.

So those companies aren't trustworthy with their respective products either. Of course it isn't going to happen without a bump in price, it's Apple. They are making what should be a normal product extremely overpriced. This is what I mean by untrustworthiness.

 

 

I never mentioned Google. I don't even own a smartphone right now. I'm just saying that Apple should be off the list of trustworthy companies when it comes to its smartphones. I don't think Google makes its own hardware for Android anyway.

Google is the closest you get to offering OS updates for smartphones (Nokia's Symbian, WinMo?), hence the mention. Samsung and RIM don't even offer OS upgrades for devices one, two or, three years old. Heck, most people are lucky to even get one. In my opinion, Apple should be up there with Google as far as OS support goes.

 

It would be far more honest to come out with it and say that once you buy a phone it isn't going to get OS updates from the start, than deny features to earlier customers when they didn't see it coming and imply them to buy yet another phone sooner than they need to.

It doesn't and has never worder that way. Capacities have never doubled at a flat rate. If that were true, we would see Intel SSDs with twice the size each release. Moore's law is a guideline and only follows a long-term trend.

The iPhone is $200. The norm for most modern smartphones in $200. And the 3G was $300 ($400 at launch) cheaper than the 2G with better capabilities.

So when they launched the 2G, they should have said, in three years, the software is going to outperform what the hardware is capable of? They couldn't have possibly thought of every possibility that the market demanded, and as such, what they developed.

Also, just Jailbreak. You get everything that Apple would give you in iOS 4, and waay more.

I'm inclined not to believe it. Musclenerd, a member of the iPhone Dev Team, said that that it was seeminlgy nonsense.

 

So much of that article seems like nonsense. How would AT&T send an over-the-air lock command to an iPhone on T-Mobile's network?

Common sense (and simple code inspection) shows that "leak" by "Alpha" about iPhone4 OTA re-locking to be silly FUD.

Jailbreak is out for iPod Touch 2G. Has been for a while, just didn't realize it. Gonna try it tonight.

 

Edit: Nevermind, looks a bit buggy. Gonna wait for a better release.
