the trekking guide was put out long long ago and hasnt been updated in ages 2 questions would be can you use monkfish as a food / can you use familars also is it a decent money source?

That's 3 questions.

Monks are decent food, you should have no problems with it.

Familiars can be used iirc.

Terrible money source.

It stands for "If I remember correctly".

To hell with humanity;

The more I see, the less I believe.

Also, you have to redeem the tokens you get from the trips one at a time, not all at once.

Depending on your tactics, you need very little/no food.

If you go for lumberjack/snakehides, you'll use easy route with a weak escort, while skipping most of the combat events. Snakes should be doable with little/no food, talon beasts (charm) same. You'll skip vyrewatches, ghasts etc anyway. I took a few baskets of food with me since they are excellent for the food event (feed 5 ppl before they turn into ghasts).

If this is the way you inted to Trek, take 1-2 monks and 2 baskets of food. It will do for several treks.

I prefer to bring cheap raw food (like mackerels). It takes up more space, but it's also unrottable--ghast events are notorious for rotting your food as you run past them.

Check my guide if you want.I've gotten 10 sets myself.Doubt you need any food source as it is easier to heal at the bank. Can't use familiars, I believe it's because you have another person "following" you. Money come from the snake hides.

Aslan's guide is terrific, I used it to get my lumberjack.

Just a few tweaks for my own preferences

Then how do you eat it?

It's for the starving travelers. Logs and a tinderbox are available during the event.

It's probably best to actually bring a tinderbox and an axe in the first place while trekking. When I did the event I just narrowly missed saving all the people because I could have saved time by either:

1. Having the food already in my invent

2. Having logs/tinderbox already in my invent

Then how do you eat it?

I skipped that event whenever I came across it, too many supplies wasted and just plain annoying to do. Just slayer ring to the tower and escort and adventurer across.
