SomethingAwful Members Build Mannable Rocket

Probably one of the coolest things I've seen on the intertubes:

COUNTDOWN TILL LAUNCH

They plan to man this rocket in 2013, and are launching a test with dummy in 7 days (as of August 22).

That's actually quite awesome. I'll be interested to see if they take pictures at 500,000 feet =D

It isn't really somethingawful, it is two guys who happen to be members there. It is pretty cool, but there is a reason it took NASA a lot of money and years to get into space, and there is a reason near space orbits cost a lot of money and have massive safety restrictions. It is incredibly unsafe. I hope they know what they are getting themselves into. Going there is much more dangerous and much harder than a submarine.

But yeah, one of them said they'd rather die with 1.5 tons of fuel on their back than of old age. I'm pretty sure they're fully aware of the risks (they are rocket scientists, heh). Coolest way to commit suicide, anyhow.

The title just made me think that it was a load of members there organising through the forum to do it, whereas it is two blokes doing it who happened to post it there.

yeah, false advertisement

Something Awful is great. If I need anything from exercise, to financial info, to legal help, to knowing what it's like being the person that takes dead bodies from places, to just funny content I can find it there.

Am I the only one who finds the thought of goons being able to reach low orbit inside 5 years a horrifying prospect? The thought that guys like this will hit moonside before most governments and set up shop is also pretty high on the "oh [cabbage] we all gonna die" list. Yeah, it's awesome that private citizens can do this on what amounts to a breadcrumb budget, but still.

If you have any complaints about me, please refer to this link. Your problems are important to me.

Don't talk smack if you're not willing to say it to the person's face. On the same line, if you're not willing to back up your opinions no matter what, your opinion may as well be nonexistent.

That's pretty cool considering the only real news of these type of things come from organizations like NASA.

Goons in space? Wut.

Anyway, that is pretty awesome.

I'd imagine there's a big difference in getting into orbit and getting all the way to the moon. But if they did, it would probably be something like this

Pretty cool. Hope it's successful. I would personally never trust it, but who knows, maybe in the next few years something like this will become more commonplace.

I dunno, if I want something aside from game talk and occasional flaming from a game site/runescape site, I'm [cabbage] out of luck. With 144K members, and 6K logged in right now, SA offers more than pretty much any forum I can think of
