As you many know, Linux has many distributions. These distributions all have their pros and cons, but, what I want to know is, which one is your favourite? Do you go with Ubuntu? Or maybe you prefer Fedora? Post your opinions.

 

Personally, I use Ubuntu. I can't really have a say in this for I've only ever used 1 distro....:wall:

I use ubuntu 10 server edition. I like it, but I'm open to trying something else for sure.

Arch Linux is what I've used for almost a year now. Great for a hacker (by hacker I mean an advanced computer user, not a criminal) like me. It's basically a DIY distro, it gives the kernel and package manager but not much else and then you can install whatever you want. It also always has the newest versions of software (which is not always a good thing, sometimes, though very rarely the system breaks, but the community is really helpful so it rarely is a big problem) unlike, for example, Ubuntu, in which the software is generally updated when the OS itself is.

^Hey, six months isn't bad- After all, lots of open source projects are on six-month release cycles. I wouldn't mind Ubuntu going to a full year if they just had one update to the major packages (Firefox, OpenOffice, whatever) inbetween.

 

Yeah like I said I use Ubuntu. I am a power user, quite fluent in the command line and I do a fair amount of programming now and then, but I just can't be bothered to go through customizing my desktop system (My laptop is a different story). It works well, if I want it to do something it will do it. It's also got great support and boot speed. New version comes out on the tenth of next month, can't wait :-D.

 

That said, Ubuntu is really the only distro I have used seriously other than Debian (But it didn't actually work well on my machine so I reinstalled Ubuntu). I might try out some other distros like Slackware, but I think I would miss all the packages build for Ubuntu. What I'd like is a distro based on Ubuntu without the bloat, and awesomewm as the window manager.

I've used Ubuntu and Fedora, and am willing to try slack or gentoo, which I will probably do when I next format my computer.

I'm still very much a Fedora person but will most likely be moving to Ubuntu with the next laptop/desktop that I obtain.

Linux Mint is cool too, I've done some installs of that. I think Mageia (Formerly known as Mandriva) will be successful, good luck to them anyway. Some people suggested that instead of forking Mandriva that they team up with Ubuntu.

Yeah Kubuntu is really under-developed. The idea that person had behind suggesting the Ubuntu and Mageia merge was that Linux is too much "Divide and conquer".
