The unfortunate thing is that there are/were a number of posters who would post a low rating and then flame the user, ie: "lol not an achievment noob".

Of course, not all low ratings are flames, but most flames are coupled with a low rating just for that extra kick.

Low ratings are not a problem as long as they're accompanied by something that isn't blatantly putting the person's achievement down. For example someone posts an 80 fletching thread:

 

Bad: "1/10 Come back when you have something better to post noob."

 

Good: "1/10 Level 80 fletching isn't a very hard level to reach. Try going for 99 now."

 

If low ratings were posted with criticism that is be helpful, or even encouraging we could make Rate This a place where anyone can post what they achieved without being attacked, flamed, or put down for it not being a 99, maxed skill, etc.

Except if you go through the past few pages, that hasn't been the case. You don't have to post a low rating with constructive criticism, because that isn't a violation of the rules. The board itself has no topicality. I don't think saying, "Be nicer" is enough.

 

So either a) the moderating team is removing the bad posts, in which case the system is working yes? We (the users) just have to be more patient before we see changes made, just like with what happened in the Clan section's change in moderation style to cut down on trolling, because we can't see user punishments. b) it's borderline posts/rude posts that spur a lot of off topic disputes which people must not like, in which case there needs an enforcement of topicality (blade's suggestion would be the perfect solution then) or c) nothing changes, the people who think that rude is against the rules need to be educated both about the rules, the report system, the ignore system, or any combination of the three.

Looking at blade's idea I can see how it would work well. It's not like there's a huge amount of discussion that takes place in Rate This! so having polls on the threads would allow people who have nothing to contribute to rate the achievement without posting a spam reply.

So pretty much we could either decide to put "If you don't have anything nice to say then don't say anything at all" into the rules or we could make it against the rules to discuss why someone rated something the way they did. Then this would allow slight rudeness but putting a cap on replies to rude people and thus eliminating any flaming that would come out of it. It sounds like it could be a good fix but whether it will work well or not depends on how well the community can ignore these posts.

It's completely ridiculous, if someone is to stand up for themselves against everything believe against, even if it's not meant any harm whatsoever, all it takes is one paper thin feelings man to complain and bam. It's all gone into a cesspool of hearsay, and ulterior motives.

That should be perfectly ok, but someone is bound to take that in a condescending tone of voice, .... but why not simply an honest "word to the wise" point of view.

 

 

In a forum made solely to illicit opinions, it's ludicrous to not allow some opinions due to subject matter; it undermines the entire purpose; if everyone is supposed to rate 10/10 or gtfo then it's not an actual Rate This. Merely an amalgam of players not wanting their feelings hurt, as well as a complimentary ego boost. Not everyone who rates low is surreptitiously trying to make you feel worthless. Yes yes, you will all say "well, low rates should be allowed, as long as their constructive." Umm, ok. Good luck with that. In a couple months anyone who writes "1/10 not that great" will be reported for trolling, or breaking the Rate This! Red Book of Ethics, as this entire thread is attempting to create.

I wasn't trying to create a moral rule book to follow. I was trying to create a better atmosphere and community. If you posted your 99 agility achievement and I rated you 1/10 for being a wanna be Usain Bolt I bet you'd feel pretty bad wouldn't you. K, I was joking I don't think anyone would troll that hard, but you can obviously see it's a cesspool of trolling and flaming which could be turned into constructive criticism rather than being an ass.

Exactly, tip.it is supposed to welcome everyone to feel part of the community. Rate this isn't living up to that. If you don't feel like posting a 99 skill then it just shows how bad it is. I don't mind it personally but it really is a problem if you look at it from the aspect of new forum members entering our community.

 

Edit: I dont mind it in the aspect that I could give a ____ less what the trolls think about my achievement. But isn't it still a problem?

I would caution you to not confuse an individual phenomenon for the entire community dynamic. A large portion of the forum users who frequent HYT are quite amazing individuals and great friends. Better still, they're welcoming and accepting to those who do the same. And that all started here. And on a day to day basis, many people have great conversations and interaction without much fuss.

 

But this is starting to get OT. If you're going to start trying to talk about how to change the community/rant about the community here in this topic, it simply won't work out. That's why Low_C is asking for suggestions to work around that and make the board itself better suited to the time

HYT is a disaster of a chat, I would never suggest anyone to go there. The political correctness, and pro moderator mood in there is so intense one can hardly breathe, let alone relax.

Considering I've been a part of HYT for a year or so now and help moderate the chat with a good group of people and a great chat owner, I can honestly say that whatever poor experience you've had isn't what we are today. You basically have to be trying to break the rules to get reprimanded lol :P It might not be the old Lightning, but the game simply isn't the same as it was then anymore, so there's no use in comparing apples to oranges. Come into the chat with a fresh perspective sometime. :thumbsup:

I can say that it's definitely an improvement over current FSC. You guys actually moderate it well, as opposed to the blatant corruption that FSC has. The only problem I've noticed is the same problem that general discussion has about elitism (Which makes sense, chances are a lot of HYT users use GD), but that doesn't come up too often and by and large is still preferable to FSC.

 

Of course, FSC was originally the chat of Blogscape, now only a handful of the users are active on any part of TIF, and some of those that are were part of Rate This's problem the last time I was there.

 

Maybe a new Blogscape Chat? This time for actual bloggers? :razz:

Maybe someone could create a new chat for blogscape? Or someone could create a thread to see if there is any demand for one.

 

As for the boards, we need people to keep giving us suggestions as to what we could do to improve the community. I understand that some things can't be fixed ultimately, but some things can be prevented with moderation and a new set of rules.

 

The star rating system Blade proposed I believe was a very insightful idea that should be further elaborated on. Maybe we can build from that?

As a general in both chats, I'm not sure how clan-chats are part of the problem/solution except for perhaps trying to make a group trolling which I believe are strictly not tolerated in either chat. They are not controlled by Tip.it Admins. :P

 

I like the idea of an anonymous star rating system of sorts for RT.

Lightning was much better, they actually understood humor. Kicking (and banning) people for making a phat once, well, shows what type of CC it is. There are numerous WBM's, and the mods are way too uptight. This is my opinion, from several years and several different HYT CC's.

I think you had one bad experience because you never read the rules and didn't want to come back afterwards. 2-line ascii is allowed in moderation and excessive use is a warn, then a kick (which is a 1-hr temp ban.) Been like this since mid-way through FSM's ownership. Again, you've got to be really trying to get kicked out of the chat. Would be nice if you popped back in once and a while, because I don't think you've seen what the recent chat's like. :P

• This forum has been renamed to Achievements (Drops, Bank Pictures and Levels). We hope that this change will slowly push the forum away from the rating system in general and steer it more towards comments.
  
• Ratings are still allowed but ratings WITHOUT comments are now considered spam and will be removed. It doesn't matter if the rating is 1/10 or 10/10, if there is no comment along with it, the post will be removed.
  
• Like with BlogScape, we will do our best to monitor the Achievements forum more closely and keep a look our for other rule violations (flaming). Please help us out by reporting these inappropriate posts if/when you come across them.

I agree with and (not even lying) am glad for the majority of the new rules. I mean, the only one I disagree with is the must post a comment. I guess because sometimes I see an account, and they have some nice stuff, and it just feels like a 6/10, but there's nothing glaringly obvious about it. It'll lead to just superficial comments "nice bank," "nice d boots" "nice ags." Which aren't very constructive, but if you really want honest constructive criticism then it'll be too stringent and people will post less and less. But, to each his own.
