Why do many people think a rapier is better than a longsword? The longsword has better stats. Is it because of the rapier's speed?

Yes, this makes rapier have high DPS on every monster. The only places where CLS are better are places where one would you a shield. There are only two such places, Solo Bandos GDW and Frost Wyrens.

 

Rapier IS better then longsword.

Yes the speed is precisely why it is superior.

 

Most monsters, especially slayer tasks, have negligible defense. Rapiers also get the upper hand in stab-weak monsters as well as they can attack more times per turn dealing more damage.

Yes, it is precisely because of the speed. I own both and I will say that almost everywhere, the rapier is better. There are a few places when the Longsword is more fun, yes. And there are even fewer places where it is better, and I can say that there is virtually no place where it is significantly better except maybe sara gwd (which is one of the things I haven't tried with both, but that's what I hear anyway).

 

It is an amazing death fodder weapon though. What I mean is if you are trying out a new boss or a new method and you don't want to risk your rapier, you could bring your CLS and kill the boss almost as effectively, while not risking your major weapon when you die.

 

I mean, I wouldn't get it for that reason, but if you already got one...

Also, it is likely that future bosses will require a shield + 1h weapon and have high defense, so a CLS might be good for the future.

 

Right now though, go rapier.

By "is Rapier better" i'm guessing you mean "is it more efficient"? Because whats better for Bob isn't always better for Sarah. Bob might like high hits, so he thinks Long Sword is better but Sarah might think speed is better, so she prefers Rapier.

A lot of my friends prefer their Long Swords over their Rapiers (they think it's a lot better infact) but that is only because we're those people who believe its funner to see a 750 every 2 seconds instead of a 680 every 1.5 seconds.

Just really depends on what you classify as "better".

Better as in, does more damage in a given amount of time against given set of monsters, not more enjoyable.

Seeing as they're made to cause damage, the weapon that does the most damage would be the best, right? The OP asked for the best weapon - Rapier (higher dps).

no no no, Bob has a longsword, which is obviously longer then a rapier, so Bob has the bigger penis. It's also been scientifically proven that a longsword gets you more chicks, quicker then a rapier. If you spend a large amount of time picking up girls in runescape, you should get the longsword, as the time saved getting girls will make up for the slower boss kills.
