ElkNight
I'm running Vista 64 bit. When I try to run windows update I get the error code 80072EFD. I have looked up the error and tried pretty much every possible solution I could find. I have a feeling it not being able to update has to do with the fact that I somehow managed to get the MS virus removal tool virus.I booted in safemode and removed it with Malewarebytes though. But now Windows Update won't work. Also, when I boot into safemode my monitors seem to shut off after about 10 minutes and they won't come back on.It seems like my GPU is overheating but when I boot in regular mode and monitor the temperatures none of them are high enough for overheating. I really don't know what to do. Heeeelp meeeee. 8,180WONGTONG IS THE BEST AND IS MORE SUPERIOR THAN ME#1 Wongtong stalker.Im looking for some No Limit soldiers! ElkNight
I tried to do system restore, both from regular boot, and safe mode. "An unspecified error occurred during System Restore" happened both times. Ill try another restore point I guess. Edit: yeah, I chose another restore point and it still won't work.' Also, for anti virus and what not I have Avira and Malewarebytes. Could either of those be affecting it somehow? 8,180WONGTONG IS THE BEST AND IS MORE SUPERIOR THAN ME#1 Wongtong stalker.Im looking for some No Limit soldiers! Lord Diddy
It is possible your antivirus may be blocking a connection between the windows update server and your computer. Also if you've ever had Norton, I had a few experiences where it conflicted heavily with system tasks. Try a quick update while your antivirus is off and see. My money is on your firewall/antivirus that may have been compromised/altered by your malware attack.

Sbrideau
I would drop Avira and get something else like MSE or Avast.Which one do you think is better?I haven't kept myself current enough to tell you, to be honest, but I had been an Avira user for the last few years, and I feel it fell down and that it isn't a good antivirus anymore, and hasn't been in a while. I have Avast on my desktop, Avira on my old desktop (which I will be uninstalling soon for another one) and MSE on my laptop. For now I feel that Avast and MSE are pretty equal. ElkNight
Well I replaced Avira with MSE, but what should I do about the problem of Windows update not wanting to work, and not being able to do a system restore? Is it a virus or just some error? 8,180WONGTONG IS THE BEST AND IS MORE SUPERIOR THAN ME#1 Wongtong stalker.Im looking for some No Limit soldiers! According to AV Comparatives [PDF], not only did MSE get the slowest scanning time, but it missed far more pieces of malware when compared to Avira. In fact, about the only thing MSE scored well in was the number of false positives. In scanning speed and detection, Avast trumped both, but increased the number of false positives. Guy
I think the way MSE works is that it scans through the system files related to the OS and checks for any discrepancies compared to a DB at Microsoft. That could be utter rubbish though. Personally, I run Avast and MSE in tandem. They don't seem to take notice of one another, and from what I've heard both are pretty solid. ElkNight
I don't remember the last time I updated. Probably a few weeks ago. Just out of being lazy and not wanting to restart and stuff. Edit: I looked it up. Lat time I successfully updated was 8/30/10. Ahahah, that's a bit longer than a few weeks I think. 8,180WONGTONG IS THE BEST AND IS MORE SUPERIOR THAN ME#1 Wongtong stalker.Im looking for some No Limit soldiers! Also, MSE is the lightest of the three when active scanning is turned off.

Sy_Accursed
Benchmark tests can be extremely misleading. For one thing most benchmark tests can be easily biased. eg benchmark that intentionally has a heap of files the disliked av will get false positives one. For another they show extremes: Like how intel cpu's benchmark much higher than their AMD counterparts. But unless you are like a commercial music producer or major game coder and actually will manage to utterly fill out the cpu potential the intel and amd chips are effectively identical. You only need a basic test like gaming on an Intel/AMD cpu to see the performance differences. The used test-set contains about 400-thousands malware samples (not older than last 6 months) and consists of... 400,000 up to date pieces of malware; much better than any other test that any single individual could produce.
