How easy is it to be hacked

Once this guy knew that we wouldn't give him the rank, then he started blackmailing us,and he also knew one of us,so that's why he didn't really want to,but as soon as he found out, then he started saying all the stuff, and we all thought it was a guy messing about, then the next day......

A rank in what? Your story isn't making much sense...

Assuming they can hack into jagex and get your account info, why would they bother with 20mil. 20mil isn't alot of money, if hacking into multiple accounts will draw attention to the hacker, it would be a much better idea if he just hacked into 1 account with alot of money.

To be honest, there are 3 options:

1. your friend isn't as clever as you make him out to be

2. the hacker can really hack into jagex

3. the hacker is bluffing

If it is 1, make your own account secure. Change pin and password, scan your computer etc etc.

If it is 2, nothing you can do. You loser either way so you might as well pray the hacker is bluffing.

And another thing, you said the 'hacker' knew one of you. It wouldn't be difficult to put a keylogger on someone's computer if they trust you.

P.S there is a 'multiquote' button for a reason.

Just to make things clear we don't know each other irl, just known each other for a couple of years:)

There are 5 of us that all co-own a clan(if I say what kind or name,I'll just get a load of [anything u want] about it),a very popular one,and one of us kinda knows the"hacker" so he gave is a chance to give him a rank in the friends chat, but we all just said no,so that's why he didn't do it straight away.

1.I don't know what yr on about,I keep saying this guy knows a lot but u guys dont catch on....he knows a lot about computers.

@kimberly-chessy08 got hacked cuz she was very very rich.

People get hack for a reason,no one would hack someone that just created a account to see what the game was like, would they....

@sy-I think at this stage, that has nothing to do with this thread, and in fact you are trolling :)

And this is no troll thread, what I am saying is he had all the things u guys are saying,so there has to be another way he could have hacked him?

This is going to be the last time I post on this thread because this is very tiring.

Ways of hacking:

1. Brute force. Commonly a dictonary attack where you try every word in the dictionary and every common password (qwerty for example) there is against the account. To do this, the hacker would need to hack into jagex and download the entire user database to bypass the attempt limits. And no, you can't just hack into the user database because all passwords are encrypted so even jagex themselves don't know your password.

2. Guess. Someone knows you well enough to guess what you might put as your password.

3. Recovery. Someone knows you well enough to answer your recovery questions well enough to convince jagex you are the account owner.

4. Keyloggers.

Actually, you're wrong about this one. Hackers take accounts by OPPORTUNITY. They don't need a reason to hack an account.

Your friend gave the hacker the OPPORTUNITY to steal his account's password. Hacker's will try to get any accounts no matter

how rich or poor it is as long as it's there for the taking. Is that clear enough?

Btw they can hack into jegex and look for the account details there.and items such as phats money and rares arnt stored on a network, lol, there isnt a place that has like 10b of every item in rs in a folder or something like that, those are created by codes or something like that,I think.

For the record, everything in the quoted post is nonsense. I hope he was trolling.

Items and money aren't stored on a network? How do you access them without going to Jagex headquarters then...?

Can you read,I said they can't....

It most distinctly says "they can" actually. And you really don't seem to know much about programming.

Gahahahaha. Do you have ANY idea how much money chessy08 had? Any idea? At all? ANY idea whatsoever? Well over 500x the amount this hacker is asking for. I'm not even kidding. In fact, 1000x works out to 20bil, and I would not be surprised in the least if cheesy08 had that much money (or more) at one point. If anything I'm still probably lowballing the amount.

At this stage even with bad broken English aside I find myself concluding that the OP is either really really stupid, so stupid in-fact he think he is in fact smart and is blind to his own stupidity, naivety and gullibility OR this is a troll thread.

Gonna have to go with troll.

Actually Chessy's worth was estimated at around 200B, or 10x that. In other words, 10,000x the amount the OP claims is being asked for.

There is an extremely remote possibility that someone hacked into Jagex to steal that specific account. If they can hack into Jagex, they can do a lot more than just hack an account. Besides, do you have any idea how long it will take to decrypt the salts and hashing used? Unless you happen to own NORAD, the possibility of cracking that database into usable data is slim.

The main thing you should be worrying about is your computer's security as well as your friend's. Eliminate as many possibilities as possible that you can control. If Jagex was really hacked like you say they were, let them deal with it.

If Jagex was hacked, they'd target much more rich people. Or, you know, steal all your accounts and add themselves to this clan thing? Or get a maxed pile of every rare item in the game?

Sounds to me like your friend that the hacker "knew" was in on it trying to scam you guys for rs cash.

This is why I love TIF people. So many is working hard to try and save somebody that is clearly doomed to being scammed in RS (and possible irl), and getting frustrated and feeling sorry for the guy. Proof of character.. ::clap::

OP: Please think, if truly at all possible for the hacker to do this, there are way way bigger fish for him to catch. 83% of people on this forum would make better targets than you..

(That 83% was for you, Barney Stinson/Neil Patrik Harris! Happy Birthday!)

At this point, to save the OP from becoming the butt end of jokes for the entire community, I'm locking this.

There is always a remote possibility of anything being "hacked." There isn't a perfect system. That being said, you can still make sure you take the proper security measures to protect your account, as well as other things.

1. Make sure you have a password that is a mixture of letters and numbers.

2. Make sure you have a bank PIN set.

3. Make sure you have recovery questions set.

The above should be changed every few months. In addition, you must be sure that the answers to the recovery questions, as well as the bank PIN and password, are not used elsewhere, are not posted elsewhere. More than ever "hackers" don't even need to send your a keylogger, but simply look up your information around the web. Social engineering anyone?

1. Do not add people you don't recognize on MSN/AIM/other messengers

2. Do not share your personal Facebook/MySpace/Twitter/etc. This especially as more often than not you have quite a lot of personal information on there.
