Remove extra newlines in old posts

This isn't too big of a deal, but it would be nice if we could trim the newlines out of old posts.

It happened when we converted from phpBB to IPB. I don't think there's any way to fix it save manually editing it, which isn't practical considering most old topics aren't still active today (with the exception of some guides, a handful of GD topics, etc) and the moderation staff is already very busy maintaining the forums.

This has been happening since the first conversion from PhpBB2 to PhpBB3, and even into IPB. If you really want the extra returns gone, I would suggest that you report the post(s) in question. That way, the Mods/Admins of Tip.It Forums can get easy pointers to all the current ones that affect users and possibly do something about them. You aren't going to make them go through the forums like a trawler through an ocean, right? ;)

I would actually consider that as an abuse of the report function, which I strongly would not recommend users do. The report feature is to be used to alert moderators of rule-breaking content. Posts prior to the conversion were not formatted in such a way to violate our Irritating Posting Styles rule, and therefore would not have action taken against them since it was no fault of the user.

So tldr I think that's poor advice and I wouldn't recommend doing it.

I hadn't looked at it quite that way, and hadn't realized the possibility of it being an abuse. Also, I do understand that the posts were never in violation of the rules. However, and not to be overly argumentative/annoying, I don't know of any other method in which posts with this problem can be handled rapidly except by sending it to the report queue. So, any ideas on what we, as lowly forum users, can do about this to help get these posts fixed?

Nothing.

It's not worth the hassle for us to edit the (literally) millions of posts that are this way. Just read them as is, it's not that difficult.

Not difficult? I think that's some of the worst sarcasm I've ever heard. LOL! :XD:

Shall I make a post in this thread to demonstrate how annoying it can get, having seen what I've seen before and being worse than annoyed as well as finding it overly difficult to stick around long enough to finish reading?

Uhh no you shouldn't because that would fall under "irritating posting styles"; but personally I don't find it all that difficult to read.

Certainly not difficult enough to require us to manually go in and edit them one by one.

It is a tad annoying and for that we apologize. I think the spacing issue was something that wasn't anticipated. Maybe for popular threads that are often looked at, we can do as you propose. I can't make promises, but I will pass it back for discussion. It's just that we can't ask people to report all of the topics like that, because it would bog down the report queue so much that we'd run the risk of severely delaying action against far more pressing issues, like trolls or phisher bots.

I hope this clears up the situation a bit more from a moderator's standpoint.

Well you could technically write a script to parse the contents of the entire post and pm tables and replace multiple breaks with a single one - but that would involve weeks of forum down time, plus it would remove any breaks like that which had been placed deliberately.

Not necessarily, all the breaks occur in multiples of 4 (or 2?). Using that information, each group gets replaced by one.

Plus, if its only for posts before a certain date, you don't run the script over the others.

But like I said in the OP - no big deal.

But like I said in the OP - no big deal.

Once again - it still runs the risk of affecting posts that have had those breaks put in legitimately.

As for the "certain date", that would be fine, except it's 90%+ of the posts on the board that have the problem so it's not really feasible at any rate.

The boards weren't designed to go from phpBB3 -> IPB, so you should expect some side effect. I agree, it is really annoying, but judging by the millions of posts on the board... it's just a huge task to do, if not ridiculous.

Here's an idea, albeit a little more blunt... :geek:

Reduce all multi-CRLF (i.e.: 5+) packs to a maximum of 4 CRLFs (per pack of CRLFs) for all posts prior to the PhpBB/IPB forum conversion's date. I do think that this would pretty much solve any/all problems and restore readability for the most part. From there, any posts that still need fixing could then be sent to the Moderator Queue, pending on the condition that the thread is still well-used in one way or another.

How does that sound to all of you??? :)

It sounds lovely, except as I stated earlier it would probably require days of database downtime which I don't believe we're prepared to do for the sake of fixing something so small.

Probably Peter will have to answer the following... Isn't there a way to leave the forums online at the same time while a script does all the dirty work?

I highly doubt this is possible. Editing loads of forum posts will mean that they HAVE to be offline, and taking random threads on and offline would be incredibly disruptive.

A majority of the concerned threads are no longer active, and stickys and such I assume have been manually cleared up. There's no point seeing as it's pretty rare to run into a thread with such spacing. Regardless of that, it would take either too many man-hours or a week of no forums for such a tiny problem. Doesn't seem justified to me.

Realistically we can't (shouldn't, and thus won't) "repair" forum topics while the forum is running. Given the amount of posts, this would be the equivalent of the post rebuild we did when we first moved to IPB, which took 3-4 days. Also, we can't easily differentiate between which line breaks should be there and which shouldn't.

In summary, we're not going to be automatically "repairing" old posts.
