lore question: why aren't deceased quest NPCs resurrected?

Featured Replies

Whenever a player dies, they are "granted another life" to respawn in the city of their choice. Generic characters that are killed also respawn after a short time. As far as game mechanics go, this is most likely to ensure there is a constant source of XP and gold, and because permanent death usually aren't a feature of most RPGs.

But when major characters (like the prince and princess from "Blood Runs Deep") are killed, they stay dead. This is probably to keep the story going. However, is there any in-universe explanation of why they're not "granted another life" as a generic adventurer would be by the powers that be?

I'm sure this has been asked before, but I can't seem to find any official explanation.

ARENAscape:

Baratus [AS] max hit: 166 with Moon Battle Hammer

ixfd64 [AS] max hit: 116 with (untitled spell #2)

Also, If you by generic character mean men and women in Lumbrigde, Varrock Guards, Cows, Dragons etc. then they do not respawn. There's simply a new citizen, animal that appears. Garden of tranquility jokes about the average duty span of a Falador guard is about 20 seconds.

According to Mod Osbourne recently it is simply a case of as far as lore is concerned we do not die.

Death is necessary game mechanic, in the same way identical NPCs respawning is but as far as the game is concerned we never ever die apart from the Vallhalla incident in Fremmy series. Anytime you actually die it is just sort of a retcon do over where the last 5 minutes or whatever did not happen as far as the lore is concerned.

Note some of the cheesy lore mentions the deaths. In addition Death the NPC has met us in the afterlife spot. But that isn't the true afterlife just a shuffling off section, where adventures resurrect. It's not that we actually don't die, but that the death we experience isn't real because some power has chosen to save us from near death.

No Osbourne literally said we do not die.

Same as holiday events are not considered part of the lore that death is not either.

It was in response to a question about why quest bosses and such simply repeat same dialogue as if nothing had happened when they killed us; the answer was as far as the lore is concerned we do not die time simply reverts to just before the fight in a retcon of events.

Yeah, Mod Osborne said no adventurer had died in Gielinor. Yet.

Well say hi to Sliske and his devious tricks with Death...

That being said, some of the more recent boss fights seem to be at least partially aware that we have either fled/died, like the Nomad fight, or Vanstrom, or....I think Zenevivia too?

However, that can be explained by your soul being redirected in the case of the Soul Wars arena, and that Zenevivia is well aware of how adventurer immortality works

not so much clear in the case of Vanstrom

rotm clearly retcons all of your past attempts, though, however this could be explained by recent exposure to the stone of jas, which then raises the question of why you are being compelled by it to carry out events in a specific manner
