March 11, 200620 yr I'd imagine people mainly drink beer because they want to relax, rather than because they're thirsty, so they'll probably be taking in more calories overall unless they're counting it into some calorie diet. This being a topic about alcohol, I'm suprised one thing hasn't been brought up yet. This thing, or rather these things, are breasts... Alcohol gives you breasts (or atleast too much too often does, provided you don't have breasts already). The condition of men growing breasts is called 'gynecomastia'. Alcohol causes gynecomastia by causing the liver to clear testosterone out of the blood. Not only this, but it cuts the breaking down of oestrogen. This stimulates the breast tissue that both boys and girls are born with, causing it to expand and branch out. I think more people would stop drinking if there were warnings about that than if they were warned about liver damage :) Fans of Goldie Looking Chain might like to listen to "Hormone Replacement Therapy" ;)
March 11, 200620 yr soda, you need to stop taking your health classes so seriously. from my experience, they tell you what you need to hear instead of the truth. they exagerate things trying to convince you to be acceptable in the eyes of society. i wouldnt call myself a heavy drinker, i only drink occasionally (mainly because its quite a lot of effort when your still 3 years below the legal age) when i do drink though, it can turn an average night into an amazing night. every time it gives you some awesome memories (and some lack of memories :P ) good friendships, stories; something you can look back on and laugh at for years. if you go through life not doing anything trying to preserve yourself, dont, theres no point in living longer if you dont even use it. i know that i wont be able to do most of the things i love doing now when im 40, so i want to make the most of the years ahead of me.
March 11, 200620 yr In these kind of discussions I have 1 vast point: "I'd rather live short and enjoy every minute of it (really living), than living long and constantly watching things and don't enjoy it (which isn't really what life is for in my opinion)." So even if it's bad, I wouldn't care. Though on the point I made I do have some restrictions as in don't go too far. What I'm asking myself also is why is alcohol not considered as drugs and weed is? It's both bad for you (if you take too much), it both messes up your mental condition, so I don't know the difference. I don't know why everyone supports drinking alcohol, and thinks weed is some kind of evil herb. It's not that addicitve either, I see more alcohol addicts than weed addicts. I'd like to ask other people's opinions on this too (if it's ok), cause I really can't figure out how it's the way it is. Amen to that. I could go into the reasons why cannabis is illegal while alcohol is not, but I won't as many people probably know them. To sum it up, it's a mixture of greed and racism. The harmful effects of cannabis are a lot less than those of alcohol. The only problem with smoking cannabis is the actual inhalation of burning plant material into your lungs. There are no other adverse side effects. Plus, people tend to be much more aware of what they are doing when high rather than drunk. I have never really done anything too stupid while high, yet I've gone around calling some cops "my [insert offensive term of African-Americans here]" while drunk. That day was a mistake, and I am not afraid to admit that. But it was an anomaly... I am usually still much more calm and in control than that. As for the whole alcohol issue, I guess I agree with you on that. I mean, I know it's bad for you, but that never stops me. In fact, I am still pretty drunk right now. (Yet notice, the quality of my posts still do not suffer. I can type coherently even when still a little buzzed, which is a definite mark of knowing your limits.) Also, I think drinking helps me a lot more than it hurts me. I am usually not a very outgoing person, and alcohol usually gives me the edge that I need to really express what I am feeling to people who I don't know very well. In summary: The pros of drinking outweigh the cons. And I hope this post makes sense otherwise it will prove the opposite of what I am trying to say.
March 11, 200620 yr The only problem with smoking cannabis is the actual inhalation of burning plant material into your lungs. There is a growing base of evidence suggesting that the use of cannabis can cause, or atleast aggravate, skizophrenia. For anyone interested, this is a rather balanced article on the health effects of cannabis use.
March 11, 200620 yr I have never really done anything too stupid while high Wait, you're gotten high???

There is a growing base of evidence suggesting that the use of cannabis can cause, or atleast aggravate, skizophrenia. For anyone interested, this is a rather balanced article on the health effects of cannabis use. I've heard about studies with the realtionship between cannabis use and skizophrenia. I think it's just important to remember that correlation does not equal causation. I don't think it has the capacity to bring on any skizophrenia that would not already be present in your mind/body. I agree that it could bring it on faster though. I have never really done anything too stupid while high Wait, you're gotten high??? Yes. I have. Is that really the issue at hand though? It was only meant as an example. (Hypothetically of course. I would never commit such illegal acts... ... ...) lol how do you like the taste of alcohol? it tastes wrse than crap, literally Sure, if you're drinking the half-gallon of vodka for ten bucks it's going to taste horrible. If you get some good scotch however, it tastes amazing. Plus, wine generally has an pleasurable taste.
March 11, 200620 yr There is a growing base of evidence suggesting that the use of cannabis can cause, or atleast aggravate, skizophrenia. That I can believe. Easily done when you know someone who smokes canabis and has been diagnosed with mild skizophrenia. @soda711: How old are you anyways? If you've managed to have at least one of every single alcoholic drink in your country, let alone world. I might take you more seriously. Because there is alochol out there which is sweeter than most desserts...

Easily done when you know someone who smokes canabis and has been diagnosed with mild skizophrenia. Good to see that both of you have adapted to my superior spelling of schizophrenia :P The problem with the argument that correlation doesn't mean causation is that, in this case, you're talking about a psychoactive drug and a mental illness. If we were talking about a correlation between wearing red socks and suffering schizophrenia then I'd agree. These aren't just small surveys of a couple of people either. If you assume that the two must be linked, as I do, you only have two possible conclusions: cannabis use causing schizophrenia OR schizophrenia [causing something else] causing cannabis use. I, too, have a 'mentally ill' friend who smokes cannabis, and he agrees. Call me biased :)

Before anyone argues that Erowid is a biased source, they are they number one authority on psychoactive drugs and present all sides of psychoactives, the good and the bad. Even if it may seem like they are glorifying drung use, they still include all the studies that condemn the use of drugs.

I agree with that from a scientific point of view. However I still would say that anyone who is talking about the risks of cannabis should mention this correlation so that those considering using cannabis are informed and can make a decision based on all the facts, even if the fact is that the jury is still out.

Okay, that's acceptable. I agree with that. I will try to mention it in the future. I'm not trying to force anyone to do anything that they don't want to or lie about health problems that are definitely there, I'm just sick of the image that the media places on those who use cannabis recreationally as lazy people who are addicted, contribute nothing to society, and spend all their time and money just getting high. It's simply not true for the general population. Of course there are exceptions, but that is true with anything.

It's an acquired taste I guess. Not everyone likes everything. Oh and by the way, I don't care for beer either. Well, at least not most beer.
March 11, 200620 yr how old are you soda, just because your parents let you sip their wine or whatever doesnt mean you know what ALL alchahol tastes like. i personally dont like the taste of some alchaholic drinks, others i like, some im indifferent. ive had drinks that are 6.5% and you could hardly tell them from coke, not even with the alchahol aftertaste, you could skull them like coke. your probably in grade 7 or so if your just learning about alchahol in health at which point not many people drink. as you get older i would think your mindset would change.
March 11, 200620 yr Think about it, wine is most often drank by higher class individuals. Those individuals with more money often are able to afford much better medical treatment and are more inclined to eat healthier foods instead of relying on cheap fast food. It's ironic, but real food is rather expensive sometimes... No its not ts the cheapest drink going I see hobo's on the streets with there 4liters of wine brought at $11 from the corner bottle shop. Even the kids who crash partys bring wine with them. ~Dan64AuSince 27 Aug 2002

You can't tell us that it all tastes crap, because it's an opinion, and being an opinion there's bound to be someone that differs, like me for example. I think beer and wine can taste quite delicious. This is how much you all raised for charity. Thank you.

March 11, 200620 yr It's like what i do, i drink occasionally and it's not to fit in its just to relax from my workload. I'm currently finishing my A-levels and i just use it to relax from the strains of trying my hardest to get to uni. You should only drink in moderation, extremes are bad.
March 12, 200620 yr Stout like Guiness or Murphy's is good for you in small quantities. It's when you drink too much that alcohol becomes bad.
March 19, 200620 yr Are you aware that there are people in this world that have a severe medical condition which causes them to be that way? My mother for instance is one of those people. She is a truck driver that has bad knees and a bad back from driving the truck but you probably do not care about that case either. Oh well I am not one of those people I am 6'4" 245lbs and I exercise every day. I would love to see you say something like that to my mother in front of me. Probably never happen though you are probably just an internet tough guy. I doubt very seriously you would say that to someones face. Just my thought. What do you think. Oh I am sorry you probably do not have a brain. I on the other hand will be happy to buy you a plane ticket to come here and see if you have the nerve to say that to someone I know. Runescaper (off and on) since late 2001
March 19, 200620 yr Myself I drink because I love the taste, gets me relaxed and easier going. I don't like beer, so I drink 20+% stuff, eg. Koskenkorva Viina Peach =D(Finnish booz with peach flavour) Or just raw booz.
March 19, 200620 yr ok i asked my health teacher today if alcohol can be healthy for you. She said that the only "ok" alcohol is red wine. she siad normal beers have lots of calaries which i think makes you fat, and it can be bad for your liver if you drink over 2 of them every day. It has been proven that beer does NOT make you fat. When you drink beer it results to being lazy and sitting around doing nothing. The sitting around doing nothing gets you fat. In these kind of discussions I have 1 vast point: "I'd rather live short and enjoy every minute of it (really living), than living long and constantly watching things and don't enjoy it (which isn't really what life is for in my opinion)." So even if it's bad, I wouldn't care. Though on the point I made I do have some restrictions as in don't go too far. What I'm asking myself also is why is alcohol not considered as drugs and weed is? I'd like to ask other people's opinions on this too (if it's ok), cause I really can't figure out how it's the way it is. Right on.I don't wanna get old the point where every single joint and muscle in your body hurts. Therefore I don't really care if I have to sacrafice 5 years of my life to have a good time. Why is weed illegal and beer legal? I have no clue. At parties and trips I think that alcohol causes more problems than weed. When you light upa joint, you feel relaxed and love the world. With alcohol people have a time period where there all energetic and crazy. I think we need to legalize weed. Weed is legal in some places in Holland, I believe, as long as you take it in small quantities and in environments with people present who know what they're doing (I've posted this before, and again, your classmates do NOT fall into that category, no matter how many times they (say they)'ve done it before). That is, there are special coffeeshops where the government sort of regulates. So is my understanding of it anyway - I don't do weed. That said, I have a problem with your rosey view of weed. Sure, if you have a good trip, you'll be relaxed and love the world. If you have a bad one, you'll feel depressed anad close to committing suicide. Weed just enhances your emotional reactions to stuff, it doesn't make you relaxed and whatever, it just shuts down lots of reason/ratio which means that you're more susceptible to emotional factors, and that your senses sometimes 'notice' things which aren't really there/happening. This can result in you being relaxed (it often does), but it can have other consequences too. The effects of alcohol are similarly dependant on how you feel at that time. A month ago I was at a dinner and had about one and a half glass of wine. I had slept really badly the nights before, and was really tired (the three nights before, I think I'd slept a total of about 12 hours. Which is just way too little for me). After I drank alcohol, I felt even more tired, and needed to concentrate on simple stuff (even walking, or opening a door). That usually won't happen with just over a glass of wine, but if your body is deregulated in other ways, it just kicks in a whole lot sooner, and it definitely doesn't necessarily mean you'll go all energetic. Wish it did. ~ Edit: Schwarzenegger, who were you talking to? You didn't quote anyone and the post above yours seems unrelated...
March 19, 200620 yr I still drink even though it's bad for me because it's hilarious and the health issues don't scare me.
