Yes, he made "runescript"

and...if every cent he made was purely profit, i would estimate about 14mil a year...

Cus...lets take these numbers...an estimate of 200k members accounts. could be more, could be less...at...an average of 6.00 USD per account...(pay by phone = 6.95, direct debit 7.95, and credit card is 5.00...so...an average of 6*200,000 is 1.2million...1,200,000*12 (months) is 14.4m ... plus the banners that a few of us click on...say...14.5m...but, then...say he has a team of 50 highly qualified programmers, and such...all being payed say...50k a year...thats 2.5mil going out in wages alone...per year...

plus the cost of servers...I don't even know where to speculate costs on these...but...say they're 20k a year alone, per server. nearly 120 servers...2.4mil...so, based off of these *

purely speculative numbers he's probably making about 5mil profit for himself per year...but, these are only guesses at the numbers, i'm probably way off...but...this should give you an idea of it...

youre way off:P look @ the staff list + they have over 600k members

As I said. they were purely speculative numbers...I didn't do much research on it...The numbers were just guesses :) I'll look deeper into it later :P

but keep in mind their job isnt easy at all they have to constantly work on updates and stuff

I searched for "RuneScript" and "Jagex", and found this corporate profile:

http://www.thealarmclock.com/mt/archive ... ofile.html

A successful community-based game like Runescape is a business to behold. Players have invested in the company and product and want to see it thrive. It is amazing that Jagex is able to make $2.5M per month from paying subscribers  all based on word-of-mouth growth. What a glorious quest.
youre way off:P look @ the staff list + they have over 600k members

Yes, over 600k members. 5 bucks a month. Someone do the math, because my calculator just broke.

Over 3.6 million... every month.

And he puts money back in the game. His updates are frequent and top quality. He spends a ton of money on staff. He never raises his prices. He supports player querries, and supports a game forum. He listens to the feedback of millions of players.. and acts on it. His development staff is huge. Hes dumping money back into the game, and its paying off by growth thats hard to believe.

This guy is my hero.

Can you imagine being a multi millionaire off of a computer game? That you invented? Thats as cool as runescape?

A circus in Runescape?? Oh my.

dont forget ad support that can take some off the f2p servers prob not much tho

only if i could be in andrew gowers shoes for one day

id hate to, the first 2 years ov rs must have been insane on trying to develope rs2 while still keeping up with rsc, cuz he only had paul constant and what, 4 workers? then the first year ov rs2 he must have been goin crazy trying to hone runescript so that he could fianlly move away from it

that being said, im sure he loved what he did, but still, i wouldnt be surprised if 80 hour weeks were the norm, and the stress and years off his life that took cant be given back by money

now hes trying to run a company that 2 years ago wouldnt have been feasible, personally id be crashing and burning, quitting jagex and selling it;)

btw, we seem to forget he isnt the only owner:P plus hes still re-investing, they have huge plans still which will require tons ov money

  • Author

didnt hmm paul and ian or dan was it i dunno cnt rememebr make up deviousMUD then they came out with rsc

wow, 2.5 Million dollars A MONTH! thats amazing... I remember when there was no members and they were like "we be poor but we are trying"

I wonder if he started with runescape, thinking to make money, or just for fun.

I always thought it was all started with Andrew and Paul

Aqua_Dragons.png

Runescape was programmed by mainly Andrew, along with like his brothers. At first it was just them with like one quest developper and then some volunteer mods on the forum. The forums were quite dead too and Andrew, Paul, Ian, etc. posted frequently on them.

If im not mistaken, ads alone pay for all the F2P servers....so realistically they shouldnt even have to be counted as they are self suportive and bring in no money (which is why they receive virtually no updates).

so id go with something like

over 600k members * around 5 a month is 3 mill+ a month

so thats 36mill+ a year

minus employees....say 200 employees at 45k a year...9 mill a year

minus # of members servers which is 46 currently i think.

say 1000 a day which is 365k a year (PER server) * 46 servers...

so say 16.8 mill

that still leaves over 10 mill a year PLUS extra money brought in from ads and such.....to pay for facilities...

Of course these are just guesses, i dono if the servers cost 1k a day or more or less? And im not sure if F2P is still paid for by ads tho i would ahve to assume andrew would do something if he started loosing money to f2p.

I would say andrew prob lives pretty nicely, but he did work hard to get there.

i think that one day rs will just die because no programmers will work and andrew will go bankrupt

Iv Green vI.png

I believe you forgot the money they get from all the adverts on f2p servers. Will all the stupid miniclip kids playing they must at least enough extra money to pay for most of the servers... With all the "lyk win dis xbox 360!1111 jus shot da buny rabit!111" ads.
