Plasma Vs LCD

Harrington

Recommended Posts

Guys, was thinking about buying a new TV next week.

Probably going to spend about 1.5k or thereabouts.

Anyway, I'm a bit of a noob when it comes to this and was wondering what you guys think is better and why.... a plasma TV or LCD TV?

Cheers.

Currently the only difference is that LCD's can go larger

Like i said theres really nothing in it generally. Unless you post some more specs of the kind you want its hard to find examples to compare

Plasma generally tends to have a shorter life-span than LCD.

Although if you're not going to be watching TV all that much, it won't make much of a difference in the long-term.

Plasma, iirc, has a crisper image than LCD and you don't get this "motion blur" some people talk about in high-action frames :-?

And things like power consumption and whatnot really depends on your settings.

Both are reliable provided that you don't cheap out and go for a no-name brand. Get something of quality even if it costs a bit more and you'll be fine.

looking at the hdtv section of any store is amazingly confusing. finally decided that for me a tv using dlp technology would be best, since it is cheaper for good quality. make sure its 1080p, hd dvds and blu ray are both going to be at that quality.

Other way round, Store bought LCD's are normally upto 32 inch. 37 is biggest I've seen, while plasma start at 37 and go upto about 60. Obviously you get what you pay for so you could get a 60 inch lcd for ̢̮â¬Å¡Ãâã10,000s.

What are you talking about? I own both a plasma and LCD, both bought from the same store (Best Buy, if you're curious.) The plasma is 50 inch, the biggest size plasma the store carries, while the LCD is 60 inch. The LCD was about $5,000 after everything (warranty and taxes), and this was about 15 or so months ago so I'm sure they are at least a bit less now. I know you don't live in the US, so maybe it's different over there, but over here plasma TV's are generally smaller and more expensive than LCD TV's.

Wow, some people need to be sure of the facts before they post.

first off PLASMAS DON'T LEAK GAS

As far as I know the plasma displays lose gas through osmosis and so have to be recharged after a while, don't remember how long.

What were you smoking? Osmosis is the diffusion of water though a phospholipid membrane or dialysis tubing when water molecules try to even out the concentration of a solvent like sugar. :?

Technically plasmas do loose gas, but so do but everyday CRTs (normal fat TVs, not the thin ones) loose gas it at a much higher rate and when's the last time you replaced the gas in your TV? Has any TV you used lost picture quality since you bought it due to to leaking gas? Doubtful. It takes over 60,000 hours for a noticeable change in picture quality for the plasma TVs. If you watch TV 4 hours a day that̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢s 40 years. of continuous use ;)

Recently I was flat TV shopping with my family and bought a 50 inch plasma. Here's what the buyers need to know.

LCDs:

+ Varied screen size, from 1 inch to about 50

+ Weigh a bit less (not that it really matters.)

+ Has less chance of burn in

- More expensive then same sized plasmas of the same quality

- Motion blur possible in action movies.

- In stores when comparing them side by side I noticed the text never seemed as sharp and crisp on any of the 50 or so models I looked at.

- - - - -

Plasma

+ Price. 45-inch LCD, retails for AU$8,999, while Pioneer's top of the line 43-inch PDP-436HD plasma goes for AU$5,999.

+ Can be made into much larger sizes 80 inches is now possible (that that you would buy one that big anyway)

+ Plasmas have brightness and contrast advantage over LCD monitors since LCD can't show true "black" whereas plasmas can.

- Use a bit more power

- if displaying the same image for a long time it can burn in. This is mainly a problem at airports/stores where they are on 24/7 and the store logo is always in the corner, there are few documented consumer cases with today's models.

CNet states:

If you're in the market for a big screen television -- and we're talking 42-inches and above -- then we'd suggest plasma as a safe bet. Plasmas give you more bang for your buck at the big end of town, and while LCDs can give you better resolution, the price difference is currently too wide.

Sorry for the long somewhat flaming post but I hate it when people go out and buy things because a friend told them a rumor they took it as fact.

I said as far as I know, I never claimed to be an expert. There was no need to be like that.
