Idea: self constrained members

Recommended Posts

With this new introduction of construction and POH I'm attempted to become a member. However, since I'm now already rather addicted, I thought it's really a bad idea to be given more features and fun things to play with.

So I was thinking, perhaps we can suggest Jegax add another kind of members, they pay the same thing and have the same previliges. However, there is a special thing that they can do, that is, when they pay their money they can specify how long a day they will allow themselves to play, say, 2 hours. Then everyday after they played for 2 hours, the game will kick them out and they cannot log back in until the next day.

If there is a function like that, I'm sure many players like me will actually sign up. What do you all think?

I think your heart's in the right place. You understand that gaming should be done in moderation as to avoid obsession. Which is - I'm assuming - why you haven't joined members yet.

I don't think it's something that would catch on though. For most people, if the addiction is out of their own control, they shouldn't even be playing anymore. Just like a recovering alchoholic is never truly recovered - at least not to the point where they can drink socially and still avoid becoming hooked again. Some might try your new option with the right intentions, but their addiction is likely to escalate and eventually they'll change their membership settings so they can play as many hours as they want, making that new feature obsolete for the very people it was intended for. Those are the main reasons I don't think Jagex would implement something like that.

Now as for you personally, if you really wanted something like that, you may be able to write some kind of javascripting that would close all your browsers after they've been open for a certain amount of time (I'm no javascript expert, so I'm not sure). If you know a good scriptwriter in real life, you might want to run the idea past them.

...of course, never venture into the wilderness if you're going to do that because just closing the browser will still leave you logged in for a minute afterward.

You could do the Java thing, which sounds workable (I'm no expert either), or you could use something other than your computer. Have you tried setting up a timer, or alarm clock or something? This may work, since when playing runescape you rarely look at the clock, so time seems to fly...but have a loud buzzing alarm in your face should bring you back to reality. I don't know what your family situation is, but another idea would be to ask one of your siblings or parents to simply walk by and turn off the computer at a certain time. The first step to curbing an addiction is acceptance...so you're well on your way a happy, healthy runescape experiance.

More on topic...I doubt Jagex would introduce this feature, since, though it would be a nice thing to do, it wouldn't be a very good buisness decision.

Why not a good business decision? The income is from monthly payment isn't it? It doesn't matter how long one plays daily? In fact if they play sparsly they will perhaps play longer and thus a longer revenue stream ...

or, they will realize runescape isn't an important part o life, find other things to do, and stop paying...I suppose both scenarios are likely, but it just doesn't seem like something Jagex would implement.

Good job on trying to stop your own addiction (before it happens).

And you thought YOUR neighbors were weird!

I like the idea, but I don't think JaGex will support it because it would all come too tricky for em.

I don't know what it is, but something keeps telling me you "own"?

good idea but if u have no will power

all u would have to do is change the setting for the time limit unless there was a non changeable time limit

but...what if you were killing kalph queen or something and u all the sudden get kicked out

there would have to be a timer in top\bottom left\right corner of the screen

great idea but might need tweeking

we have all done this before

one time i woke up sleeping under my bed with a jello and a spoon lol :ohnoes:

i do not think it is a good idea. jagex prides itself to not time thier users. this may convince parents to buy membership to thier kids but do we really need more noobs at members.

Yes a timer would be perfect, although I don't know if it is very hard to add or something. As for no will power people changing the time limit, perhaps they could only do so when they are paying every month. Although they might still change it longer and longer ...

but the thing is.......is that rs wants u play more so they get more money....its a marketing thing

No but you play shorter on a day so you play more days and months so rs gets more money right right?

Yea that is true...but some ppl wont like it becouse they dont have as much time as a non-member....so they will just play non-memeber....lol
