Bubsa
no, it's a fact that Hendrix in comparison to other players is incredibly average. A fact? Right, ok, based on what measurement? he had a huge amount of media attention in his day which is probably why people think he is so legendary. So you think back during his time, no MTV, no internet, no real mass media, Hendrix got more media attention than bands of today? Well, I guess if it's a fact we can't argue with it. :-s This is how much you all raised for charity. Thank you.

Lateralus
The fact that Hendrix was an average technical guitarist should NOT at all take away from the fact that he made excellent music. La lune ne garde aucune rancune.

Im saying since all the cameras were pointed at him in the day, it's only logical that in our age, he's one of the only guitarists we know about. Today it's even worse, Hendrix actually had some talent, now most bands which are on TV have absolutely no talent whatsoever.

Badboys, I refer to our homies like Satriani, Steve Vai, John Petrucci, Al Di Maeola, John Mclaughlin to name a few I would've thought most people thought of Hendrix as a guitarist, not a band? apinagez
Hendrix is the guitarrist, of course. We aren't that stupid. Each period has it's idols. Will you say Mozart sucks just because his style got old fashioned? Hendrix could make the sound of people talking with his guitar. I'm not saying Satch can't, I don't know, but he did those things in the 60's. He was revolutionary, and if he hadn't been there, problably your badboys would much likely play something else. Anyway, I'm not an expert, so I can't say who's better, technically. Therefore I put all those guys in the same level, and then there are the legends, such as Hendrix. ^The most disturbing signature on Tip.it^Last.fm|HELLY KAYLA!|Oh the mehagurtz!|#Siencemakers"they care less about their spelling mistakes then I." - Lionheart"apinagez... let me

On the contrary, Mozart's pieces are stilled played today. I never said Hendrix's style is old fashioned though did I? Hendrix making the sound of people talking is a gimmick which says nothing about skill or talent. He wasn't revolutionary, guitarists 100s of years before him have been soloing. The only thing he did which no other guitarists had done before him was make use of modern technology at the time to create sound effects such as wah wah and distortion. These technologies were already available before he used them however so if he hadn't have used them, someone else would have. Hendrix didn't know much music theory at all. I'm not saying he's a bad guitarists, i'm just saying he is average and that he is ridiculously over rated.
apinagez
I'm the one saying his style isn't cutting edge, which by no means makes his music worse. Isn't modern technology+solos+a "halo" what Rock's about? Surely if he hadn't done those things, somebody else would. Does that take his merit? No. We don't say Graham Bell wasn't important just because the phone would get invented anyway. Now we get down to the discussion of how much this "halo" matters in Rock. Hendrix became a legend, he had this rock n' roll halo, and, as rock is popular music, media matters. However, the fact he was commercialized doesn't make him worse than any unknown guitarrist. ^The most disturbing signature on Tip.it^Last.fm|HELLY KAYLA!|Oh the mehagurtz!|#Siencemakers"they care less about their spelling mistakes then I." - Lionheart"apinagez... let me

Graham Bell is different, he worked hard to create the telephone. Hendrix probably picked up his peace pipe and said something like "oh, this **** is going down on my funky nizzle" and that was how distortion was invented. People can call him a legend, he is very overated though. If you enjoy his music fine, but if playing with guitar effects is revolutionary, then he really didn't contribute a great deal to music. apinagez
Anyway, we got where I wanted to get. I crafted your criticism down to a technical level, and here is where I drop the discussion, as I know **** about technic details. May some wise soul come here and destroy your technical point. I laughed at your description of the invention of distortion, though. :P Nice discussion, I'm now moving to the phobias thread. ^The most disturbing signature on Tip.it^Last.fm|HELLY KAYLA!|Oh the mehagurtz!|#Siencemakers"they care less about their spelling mistakes then I." - Lionheart"apinagez... let me

Rizla
I think Hendrix is considered a legend because in his day, no one was playing like he was in terms of technique, style and just his general presence on the stage. Modern day guitarists might be better, faster, more technical, but Hendrix is the guy that paved the way for these people to learn guitar in the first place. He's the guy that really took guitar playing by the balls and brought it into the limelight. Kirk and Lars I could handle. At the same time.
