Windows Vista

I installed the beta version of Windows Vista today :) .

I personally think it's just a bloatware version of Windows XP, just with a few add-ons. I was supprised the beta version they were giving out was Vista Ultimate :shock: .

I do like the look better than XP. I like how you can have a real clock and a gage that shows how much memory your using on the side of the desktop. It just uses so many more resources than XP does, 2gb will not be overkill for an average user anymore.

What do you guys think of the new Windows?

It's a beta, what do you expect? :).

As it is right now, it's just a shinyer windows XP. However, once Direct X10 comes out and they finish it, it's going to be a heck of a lot better for gaming.

There are a lot of features being done in Vista with more of an emphisis on gaming.

=D> You've got alot of courage my friend... BETA... MICROSOFT... i salute you..

agreed

not to mention they are being rushed to finish this and it will suck. it's finished version will be nowhere near wat it could have been...and i will expect after 6 months of its release like 2 service packs...

even if they culda done wat it was supposed to do (and had enough time) it would still suck...oh well...maybe the next OS will be Unix based like all good OS's :-w

Yes I do :) . I'm dual booting XP and Vista (well triple boot if you include linux) so I can still have a stable.....eh more stable OS than Vista.

I was suprised that there were only 7 critical updates to install on Windows Update.

Realy? I didn't hear about this. Well besides for Direct X 10.

Here's a question for everybody. Do you think they could have added Direct X 10 to Windows XP? Like just as a normal download or are they just being greedy forcing more people to swich?

I think they could have put it into XP.

from what i understand they arent gona be greedy with new IE and Media player, but who knows about this. To tell you the truth if I was Microsoft i would keep it and a reason to upgrade.

A lot of people think Vista is going to be a let down though, because it doesn't offer anything new. But they are putting a lot of emphisis on imporving the features they already had, and since i am a kid i don't need those fancy C: search engines or other business tools i think Vista is going to be great.

What are the minimum requirments for Vista now anyone know?

cause i am buying a laptop soon and I want to make sure its Vista compatable, don't want to be like some of those people who couldn't upgrade to XP w/o some problems.

@vlad.

somewhat close to XP PRO, but vista is going to be a memory hog, i think the minimum RAM was 256 or 512, i forgot, and a fairly good processor.. 1.5ghz+ or something. dont take my word on the processor part though.. its been a while since i checked.

I'm mad now. My computer is a very good gaming computer granted it's only single core and a x850 graphics card but it's still considered very fast. The vista preformance rating only rated it a 4! not out of 5 but out of 10! I would be thinking this system would have gotten a 7 for todays standards.

Taken right off of the Microsoft website.

A Windows Vista Capable PC includes at least:

* A modern processor (at least 800MHz1).

* 512 MB of system memory.

* A graphics processor that is DirectX 9 capable.

A Windows Vista Premium Ready PC includes at least:

* 1 GHz 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor1.

* 1 GB of system memory.

* A graphics processor that runs Windows Aero2.

* 128 MB of graphics memory.

* 40 GB of hard drive capacity with 15 GB free space.

* DVD-ROM Drive3.

* Audio output capability.

* Internet access capability.

Yeah I think I got a 4 aswell... It was down to how much of a partition I gave it though.

Apparently you get a really low score for a 20GB partition. #-o

My only real problem with Vista was the speed of it, I don't think it had full support for my motherboard. So it was even slower than XP.

I'm also kinda pissed that Microsoft haven't included their new file system, that was the main reason I was going to go out and buy Vista... But supposedly they can't get it to work properly, so we're stuck with NTFS for now. :wall:

Who said the performance rating was out of 10?

I am not 100% sure about BETA 2 CTP but on my builds of Vista [5365 and 5456 both interim] the best you can get was 5.

1 is the worst and 5 is the best.

.

It gave speprate scores for each part then a total score. My graphics card score was like a 5.9 so it has to be over 5.

Oh that may be it with me, the partion. I gave it 50gb.

I was hoping to test the file system out too and maybe see what the advantages are.. Does anyone know the benifits of the new file system?

Overall for a beta I didn't have problems with it. I find it much harder to use than XP. Although that could just be me :?

I guess you need a dedicated graphics card to use vista. So that means no more intergrated graphics. Does that mean prices will go up on pre-built computers?

Sorry I misunderstood you, I thought you was talking about the overall rating [The part where it says: Your computer has an overall Windows System Preformance Rating of ....]

Something I just realized, which makes me actually really dislike vista is that they're pretty much screwing legacy users in the hardware-department, but they aren't also screwing legacy users backwards-compatability wise. If they did both of them they could make some real progress, all they're doing now is making a flashy POS with the same pitfalls as previous versions. BLEH.

That being said, though, they are supposedly doing some interesting performance enhancements and have some innovations with graphics, which will allow cooler effects and whatnot....

What can I say? I'm a hwore for eye-candy..

Crap. They ARE screwing many people. It looks like something that came out of my back end.. Just plain lame.

I installed Vista beta 2. It sucked mroe than I thought it was going to. :-X

Then again I'll probably install it one time or another. :pray:

Microsoft aren't being 'greedy' by making DirectX 10 Vista capable only. It's because XP simply can't run some of the features of DX10, Vista is coded and it's engine can do the new aspects that are included with DX10.

There's an interview with some of the creators and designers somewhere of DX10, search around Google for Vista Interviews, you'll find it.
