Hey.. Last night between 11:30pm - 2am (British Summer Time) apparently someone was on my account, I'm pretty sure I have no keylogger, as it wasn't exactly a 'proper hack'.

 

 

 

All that's missing from my Runescape account is my Wizard (G) robes, Zamorak Kiteshield, Mithril ores (?![didn't take Adamant ores!]) and some other items worth maybe 100k. What's weird is I have all my money still, and I think about 200k more.. :-s

 

 

 

I don't care about the items at all, it's just a game, however I would love to find out who it was as I believe I know the person.

 

I've got the IP address and have sent it to Jagex, but I they're having problems with their customer support as I haven't even recieved an automated message to something I asked a week ago.

 

 

 

I'd just like to know if there's anything I can do myself with this IP address and if I can find out the location of the computer used?

you can trace the IP address back to the ISP , and often a "somewhat close" location

 

 

 

but its not going to tell you the exact address of the persons house , and their ISP wont tell you either :P

If you contact the ISP, they might issue a warning of some sort to the person who owns the account. You know, most ISP's would frown upon their subscribers using keyloggers/trojans to steal passwords on computers.

In the UK at least, 'somewhat close' can mean 100+ miles as entering mine in there shows the ISP's central link thing in Birmingham.

the could have used a proxy however, then it becomes a wild goose chase.

I though jagex didnt allow connections from a proxy..oh well.

But i doubt you will have any luck asking any info to the ISP, they only disclose that to authorities and with a court order.

 

You could act naive and ask the person you suspect what is his IP though, could be the same that the one used to get in your account.

Proxys can be impossible to detect sometimes.

you could also get your friends IP through something as simple as MSN if you know how to use DOS.

DNSstuff has never been close. These guys are much, much better at what they do, being a full time geoIP company. I've used there City IP location to scare more than a few self proclaimed internet experts back into line. :lol:

 

 

 

As the others have said, having an IP address doesn't really mean anything. It could be dynamic, it could be a proxy. Best thing you can do is notify Jagex of the date you noticed the IP and the IP that wasn't you and let them do whatever it is they do about the matter. They should be able to track down where the items went and ban the offender. Other than that, you're stuck with resecuring your account/computer and moving on.

That website did actually give me an exact address, it was within 'Herndon, VA (Virginia), USA' However the address given looks to be a company address, and seeing that the person/people who I'm suspecting the most are in North Carolina, and still in college (or whatever it's called at that age in America) I don't think that's right. However maybe that address was were the server is located or their internet service provider is based? Ah, I don't know...

Using the City Ip Locator you gave (thank you!) it's located it to Houston, Texas. Now, living in London/Bristol all my life, I'm not sure if either Houston (TX) or Herndon (VA) are that close to North Carolina, so again, maybe that's the location of.. Something else..

I couldn't get any information from this site, I tried all the various ways I know of to write the IP address (just the numbers/whole address/numbers with dots [.] connecting instead of hyphons[-]) but alas, nothing.

 

 

 

Thank you all again for the help, maybe if I find out how to write the IP adress in a way which will make it valid for all sites I might get a better location.

Both sound like dialup companies. :? I know AOL lookups all return a city in Virginia because of how they route all their connections. I think there's a few other ISPs that get listed out of Houston too, for the same reasons.

 

 

 

Either way, the format RS gives you the IP in is a standard format, so you aren't going to get any closer than you already have.

that site isnt that accurate, it said i lived in new jersey, at cherry hill, and i dont live in new jersey

 

and every ip i tried (friends/family), it wasnt even right with them

However, as soon as you begin sharing a file or anything of the such you have a direct connection with that person

netstat in dos to obtain their ip address

I'm 56 miles away from Birmingham but it says i'm there. It's not that good. HeHe. It might be that BT is based in Birmingham?

No, you said it yourself - a college IP. Chances are they have their own node, so will be detected perfectly as their traffic isn't being routed through an ISP's central link.

http://www.maxmind.com/app/locate_ip gets that down to Perth, WA, Australia - which is what you give us in your TIF location anyway. Also, you use Telstra.

 

 

 

The site gives a latitude & longitude, but I'd be very sceptical of that. Here - http://maps.google.com/?q=-31.9333%20115.8333 - that could be where the exchange you use is located, or it could just be "Perth"

The lat/lon coordinates are only ball park estimates at best. The last time I looked mine up, I ended up in a corn feild 10 miles from my house. It still had the city name correct though.

 

 

 

It's still by far the most accurate IP locater I've ever found. :lol:

I dont think you will ever get much more acurate than what maxmind is showing
