So I have to do this project...

Well hello there tip.it, Sirgatory here with a little assistance needed.

Okay, so I take a problem solving class at my HS, and this week our project is to make a balloon racer.

The Materials (all must be used, no more no less)

1 Index Card

1 Balloon

3 Paper Clips

2 1/2 inch straw

18 inches of tape ( not all must be used)

So we have to use all of that, to transport 2 oz of weight across a 18 foot stretch of fish line.

Unfortunately, not one person out of our 26 person class has come up with a way to get the transport even half way across. Also unfortunate, is that we must have to get graded on how far the transport goes by tomorrow. if it goes no where, you get a 0, if it goes half way, you get a 50. You get the idea.

So after searching the internet tonight, I still haven't found a way to make it work. Now i'm here to ask all of you out there with creative minds to help me out and give me ideas. :)

Also, if this is in the wrong forum, mods please move it, do not lock it on me :(

My old signature had to do with PKing the classic way.

Unfortunately, that is no more.

hmm.... so is it just a straight 18 foot stretch?

You obviously need a way to make it move some. I would think that you would need to pop a hold near the end of the ballon with it taped to a straw on the fishing wire... That's the only idea I have.

Weird project...

you'll have to forgive the cudeness of this, but shazam.

i have no baloons atm, but i'm sure you can work out where it goes :P

punctured the card at both ends so the paperclip can "loop" through it

I then used the 3rd one to brace the others (stop them moving together / apart while traveling)

the straw sits in the bottom loop of the card just for more stability.

didn't really have time, but use tape to fold up the edges a bit towards the paper clips. so it's a weak curve (just so the weight can't slide off the edges and such).

and that's it.

the tops of the paperclips sit on the string, and you're done.

That should work :ohnoes:

It's completely your choice on how you want to do everything :)

And thank you darkrick, I have not tried that yet, though something similar. Maybe your version will work :-k :)

Make a paper airplane out of the index card, tape straw to it, tape balloon to straw. Shazam!

We had to do this stuff to once. :P

Well, my school day is over, and I took my shot at the project.

What I ended up doing was taping the index card, straw and 2 paper clips to the top of the balloon. I then Hooked the 2 clips to the line.

Then, I wrapped the other paper clip around the 2 oz weight for no reason, and taped the weight to the bottom of the balloon, and sent it sailing. I got it all the way to the end, and then some :D

Thanks for your help, Dark Ricks Idea was what inspired my model :)

Ok, fill the balloon with helium, attach the straw to the balloon with tape, then use the tape to support each of the four corners of the index card (! piece from each corner, the other end of the tape ending securely on the straw)

This is the best solution I can come up with. And to be fair to me, you said 18 feet, but you never specified the direction that it had to go in.

There's no sig here. Move it along...

A. He has already solved the problem...

B. Where's he going to get helium?

C. He said ACROSS an 18 foot stretch of fish line.
