Anarchy Online. [Free to Play!]

Featured Replies

So, I've had a review dedicated to this game in my MMORPG reviews post, but I felt that this one was good enough to bring justice to a full post. As well, I think a lot of you would like to try it out.

Anyways, where to start... Anarchy online is a Sci-Fi MMO created by Funcom.

Now, you may want to know why I said a lot of you would like to try it out. Well, it's free... kind of. You see they are using a system somewhat simular to what runescape does (except gives you much, much more to work with).

You can play the game for free. This free account, however, doesn't have acess to any of the expansion packs. What you do get, however, is the origional game, and quite a large one at that.

The game is unique in which it is class and skill based. For example, you start off chosing your class. This can be from the list of they have, ranging from Enforcers (Melee tanks) to soldiers (Ranged damage dealer) to all sort of other characters such as Healers, Nano-technichions (nukers) and various other classes.

The fun part comes with your skills. I'm going to take my Enforcer as an example. I can build him in a varrious ammount of ways. For example, I could build him to become one that uses two handed swords or blunts (I use 2H swords) or I could dual weild swords/blunts or even use an Energy weapon or piercing weapon. There are more choices as well I can get into if I wish. Don't be overwhelmed though, as funcom recently added in a "sugested IP" button that put's points into logical skills for your character.

One of the best things about the game though is the ability to twink. Twinking is basicly making a low character be able to weild powerful weapons, through means of implants and buffs. You see, about 95% of the equipment in the game are based off of the stats you have, and not your actual level. What many players do is get a character up to the 20's and then buff them with powerful skill incresing buffs. These allow the character to be able to wield much more powerful weapons. Also, once you have a weapon equiped it won't just "de-equip" when you lose the ammount of skill points.

Leveling in the game is fairly fun. The combat is slower than other games, and the game is generaly a team based game. However, many classes if played right can solo, and some can solo exceptionaly well (for example, adventurers (jack of all trade's type character, great at everything master at nothing) and Martial artists.

So? Do you want to play at this point? Well, create and account here:

and get to playing. I am on the Rubi-Ka 2 server, so I'd sugest that anyone starting up try and join there. I have met some incredibly nice players there, and thus have been able to set my self up well. I'll be sure to give pointers to anyone that joins the server :) .

Anyways, other than that the game is an exceptional game. I dont have many screenshots right now (game is actually down atm for a patch [or something] but I will add some more when I get the chance. Until then however we will have to do with this: [edit]

Me completly owning a mob that is 11 levels higher than me. Notice in the description : "Trying to kill this alone will almost certainly result in your death."

Oh, and as a final note just so everyone knows my server/name:

Server: Rubi-Ka 2 (Rimor)

Name: Nadril

if you decide to play the game be sure to PM me ingame! :D

How big is the file to download? To be honest I don't really feel like downloading another game, though it does sound kinda cool even if it isn't the most original game in the world.

I just thought you should know I saw this:

Conditions

*You can play free of charge until January 15th 2007. Should Funcom deem that server load or other unforeseen events will lessen the experience for paying subscribers the offer will be terminated at our discretion. The free version does not include access to any of the three expansion packs. Should you wish to upgrade to any of the expansion packs monthly subscription and client fees will be added

Their free deal has worked great (brought them in a ton of players) so expect them to continue it.

It's about a gig.

Does the game upload a lot because they're threatening to cut our internet if we upload too much. :(

I don't belive so, no.

Hmm, is it addictive?

At least, I think that.

  • Author

Hmm...

Levels 1-25 or so are fun, but not "addictive" as you say. I.E i found it a bit hard in those levels. Once you can start going to the Temple of three winds (place where I took the picture at) it changes completly. Place has tons of mobs, mini-bosses and bosses in it.

It's a great game, little hard when you start though. But, like I said, send me a PM and i'll help :D.

Ok, I'm gonna try it. ::'

I guess I'll play in 2+ hours when the download is done. 6 hour downloads usually are pretty good.

My heart is broken by the terrible loss I have sustained in my old friends and companions and my poor soldiers. Believe me, nothing except a battle lost can be half so melancholy as a battle won. -Sir Arthur Wellesley

I played it for a while, I think I was about level 13 or something when I quit. It wasn't very smooth, I would click somewhere, and it would walk there, then jump me back to where I was 2 seconds ago. It was a huge annoyance at first, but I suffered through it. You could still walk places, just it would take about twice as long. Then, on my last time playing, I was walking down a road. Then it did the jump thing. Oh well, click again like I always do. Jump thing again. Log off, log in. Jump thing again. Sit down for a while, then walk. Jump thing again.

I almost broke my monitor, that was amazingly frusterating. That's what caused me to quit, there were plenty of other annoying things too. But it is free, so it might be worth it.

That's odd indy, hasen't happened to me.

I use WSAD though, not click to move.

@Bmms: Keep playing, it's confusing at first :) .

I downloaded that agme, and it was sadly, laggy as hell :(

  • Author

Really?...

I don't lag and i'm on a horrible connection. .

I should point out that only AO and Eve online have been enertaining enough to keep me playing it for more than three days. Every other MMORPG I have tried since Runescape usually lasts around 10 minutes on my computer. That's probably including the install time also.

AO might be pretty good, I just don't care for MMORPGs. And I didn't like the interface, as I stated above.

Yeah that's cool.

EVE was fun for a little bit, but too hard to get around to do anything.

I was turned away from the UI in AO at first, it's a lot better when you are used to it though :D:D.

Everyone on server 2 add me!

Whoo, farming for gold has never been so tedious! :P

My enforcer hit level 44 :). Using dual 1H blunt weapons now, such a difference. Me and my friend can duo bosses 11+ levels higher than us. .

Yeah, you can get it from other mirrors.

tied it last febuary, it got boring just going from building to building doing random quests

You don't have to do missions if you don't want to  . I personaly dont because, as you said, they are boring. However I found once I got to temple of the three winds (level 25-60 area) the game got a lot more fun. It's a dungeon with tons of bosses and mobs in it, great fun.

Hehe I just helped out barihawk a bit :D.
