1.0. Introduction

Welcome to the Stowaway's Guide to Wall Safes - Gems, GP & Thieving XP for everyone! The main point of this guide is to introduce all of you to the Wall Safes. These handy things make decent thieving exp, give GP when thieved from the best of all, occasionally give out gems which can be used for levelling crafting and creating jewellery. Once again, I'd appreciate it if anybody out there could contribute to the guide or correct some spelling and grammar mistakes. Now, put your thieving masks on and read on! Also, no part of this guide may be recreated or reproduced in any way unless you have been granted permission by me to do so.

2.0. Getting there

The Wall Safes in themselves are actually part of the Rogue's Den Lobby which can be found in Burthrope. To get down there, you must go down a trapdoor behind the Bartender in Burthrope's Pub or Bar - whatever you may wish to call it. Here is a map pointing out where the trapdoor leading the den is.

wheremb9.png

When you do, you will stumble upon the Rogue's Den Lobby. You will know this is the right place if you see something similar to this...

welcometotheroguesdenvn4.png

A sleepy orange domain with three NPC's an an eternal fire. I will briefly introduce you to the three musketeers. Martin Thwait is the Rogue's Den salesman who sells thieving equipment such as Lockpicks and Stethoscopes. The Stethoscope will be something that you'll be needing and it'll be explained later on in the guide. Emerald Benedict is your one-man bank. You will be needing his services later on for obvious reasons. And last but not least is may I introduce you to Brian O' Richard. If you wish to further exploit the many other features of the Rogue's Den he's your man.

3.0. Requirements

To successfully thieve from the Wall Safes you will need the following:

50 Thieving (otherwise you can't steal from the safes)

Food - Trout and Salmon is greatly recommended as they are easily obtained and can heal a decent amount of HP.

Stethoscope - This is not really a requirement but will assist you in thieving from the Wall Safes CONSIDERABLY. You can buy this from Martin Thwait as mentioned earlier before.

Your inventory should look something like this...

inventorybq9.png

The inventory explained...

Food - Obvious, you will sometimes recieve damage when you thieve from the Wall Safes.

Stethoscope - If you read the above then you'll know why.

1 GP - GP thieved from the Wall Safes will stack up here.

4.0. Ready, Steady, Loot!

Once you have all your equipment, its time to actually thieve from the safes. There are four Wall Safes in the Rogue's Den in total. These are located on either side of the pillar east of the eternal fire. If you haven't noticed, they look like this.

wallsafewk4.png

When you're ready, crack the Wall Safe. This will take a few moments, but when you do crack it, you will get 70 thieving exp, a random amount of GP and if you are lucky, you will get a gem as well. (You usually get a gem once every four-six loots) When the trap springs up from underneath your feet and hits you, ignore it, eat if possibly needed (traps can hit for up to 6) and then continue thieving from the safe regardless of the trap underneath you. Lather, rinse, and repeat. Keep doing this until you have to bank. Withdraw more food and deposit all your gems and just keep on thieving. If you right click the trap that you have triggered while looting the safe, you will see a 'Search' option. DO NOT search it. Don't try it out of curiosity either. If you do however, you will temporarily disarm it and step onto the square it is in. What's so bad about this you ask? You lose a thieving level everytime you search the trap. (Temporary)

Alternatively you can thieve without employing the use of food by following this procedure submitted by qopitar.

Nice guide, one small comment:

When I steal from the safes, I am able to eliminate the need for food by employing the following technique.

1) I steal until nearly dead.

2) I bank everything and make sure that I have only a games necklace in my inventory.

3) I steal until death.

4) I use the necklace to telly to the games room and run back to the Rogue's Den.

5) Goto 1

F.A.Q. (Frequently Asked Questions for those who don't know)

Q: Does my thieving level affect how often I can successfully loot the Wall Safe?

A: No which I find is very unique :) .

Q: How often do I get gems from the Wall Safes?

A: Well, from the study I have done above, you have an approximate 25% chance of getting an uncut gem. You can expect to get at least one gem per minute but it fluctuates alot. I usually get around 5-12 gems per minute but it all depends on your luck.

Q: Are the gems I get cut?

A: They are uncut  .

Q: Does the Ring of Wealth affect the rate I get gems at?

A: No.

6.1. Knights of Adrougne VS. Wall Safes

On the left corner, weighing in at (insert weight here) pounds, the Crusaders of Kandarin, the Sentries of Justice, the Knights of Adrougne!

And on the right corner we are very honoured to have the Wall Safes of the Rogue's Den. Weighing in at (insert weight again pl0x) pounds, the Wall Safes have offered some very fierce competition to the Knights for the title of best thieving exp and loot.

Pros & Cons for the Safes

Pros:

There is a bank nearby

You have access to numerous utilities such as the Games Room, an eternal fire, the Burthrope Slayer Master and the Heroe's and the Warrior's Guild to name a few

Gems!

You get GP as well

There are lots of people to talk to who are either cooking or thieving with you which means you can keep yourself awake when you're doing this for a long time

You don't have to run around ::'

No right-clicking involved

Cons:

There is no FREE food source nearby whereas you can obtain cakes from the Adrougne Cake Stalls

Moderate exp only the Knights give 5-10K more exp per hour but the gems pretty much make up for it

The traps can hit for much more compared to the Knights smacking you

Expected Loot and Exp per hour

At the Knights - 45Kish exp per hour & 15K+ GP per hour.

At the Wall Safes - 30K-40K exp per hour & 50-80 odd gems varying from Sapphire to Diamond as well as 3K-10K

Hopefully from this you can decide on whether the Knights or the Wall Safes are better for you. Note that LOTS of things can affect the results and these are only rough estimates. You can get higher exp per hour at the knights if your thieving level is reasonably high.

You - For reading.

7.1. Closing Words

And that concludes my brief introduction to Wall Safes and how to tackle them. Good luck training thieving and keep on travelling! Don't try to land yourself on America's, Runescape's or whatever's Most Wanted pl0x.

Glad both of you liked it. Lots of P2P players don't seem to be aware of some of the game's extra features with the Wall Safes being one of them. I was just hoping to introduce a few people to the whole thing  .

if it's not too much trouble, can you estimate the amount of exp you can expect to get? Is this a good way to get thieving exp?

Its slightly worse than thieving from knights

just saying loot works fine too... and 20 loots is pretty stupid to put in to a guide... better loot it 500 times and count the fails, gems, money / safe etc.

Stethoscopes can be bought in Rogue Den lobby for some measly 30-50 gp.

Anyways, nice guide! Thumbs up!

10gp to be exact. :P

It is a good idea but it is merely a guide to introduce you to the Wall Safes themselves. If you want you could loot it 500 times and see the number of gems and gp you get ::' . I'm pretty sure it'll be around 50-100 odd gems. It's either that or I don't have enought time... sorry :( (school)

I got many thieving levels down there (I'm 83 now) and hundreds of gems. Nice guide. As for a lower failing rate at higher thieving levels: I've been there with people who had level 60 thieving or so and they did seem to get hit more often...

Some comments though:

- You do not need to use the stethoscope with the safe. Just keep it in your inventory. Tests have been run before and some stated that using the stethoscope with the safe every time actually yields worse results. Not to mention the time it takes...

- You don't have to swap safes everytime you triggered the trap. Just stay in place and loot away. I never felt that with the trap triggered, my chances of success lowered. And yet again, the running around slows you down.

Maybe you could also add a pro/con comparison with knights to give people an idea of what to expect.

Pro: you don't have to move around, you don't need to right-click, you get access to easy crafting xp, there's a bank nearby...

Con: you can be hit higher (up to 6hp), it's slower, you have less consistency in your loot (with a measly 10 gp as absolute low).
