Hmm, that might be an interesting poll to run, not on the main site obviously, but within OT.

It really annoys me when people say 'OMG, I hate Google/Microsoft/' These people often have very little justification for 'hating' these companies, other than they are jumping on the bandwagon. There is to my mind, very little to hate large companies for, on the contrary, a lot of reasons to love them. If you are going to say 'I hate Google', solgonsar, at least back it up with some decent evidence as to wat they have done to upset you so much.

Sorry to sound a bit harsh, but that kinda thing just annoys me.

Fine.

I hate google because whenever someone wants to find something out they say "I'm gonna go google *blank*" It gets on my nerves because for one thing "google" is not a verb and there are plenty of other search engines that work just as well. I also hate google for buying youtube even if they don't make any changes, it reminds of other places (wal-mart) that just take over all smaller buisnesses, or drive them out of buisness.

The verb to Google means "to use the Google search engine to obtain information on the Internet." For example, "Mary Googled for Wikipedia references." Compare with grep. This new word arose from the tremendous popularity of the Google search engine. The American Dialect Society chose Google as a nomination for the "most useful word of 2002." The verb 'Google' was officially added to the Oxford English Dictionary (OED) on June 15, 2006, and to the 11th edition of the Merriam-Webster Collegiate Dictionary in July 2006. The OED notes the question, "Has anyone Googled?" in the Usenet Newgroup alt.fan.british-accent on October 10, 1999 as the first recorded usage of the word.

1) You hate Google because of what people that don't work for Google say? I think it's funny that you bring up this point because Google, the company you hate, agrees with you.

It's important to make the distinction between using the word Google to describe using Google to search the Internet, and using the word Google to describe searching the Internet.

Now your point is that Google can't be a verb. Why not? Why can searching Google not be a verb? When you send an email don't you consider it "emailing," so why can't searching Google be considered "Googling?"

Disliking a company because of what other people say is ridiculous and irrational.

2) What's wrong with them buying YouTube? Why is that bad? You give no reason that it's bad, you just say you don't like it.

You are being completely ridiculous. You jumped the bandwagon and now you're grabbing at straws trying to rationalize it. Give up.

Fine.

So... You don't think Google's huge popularity originates from the fact that what it really is - what the founders actually invented - was a search algorithm more effective than anyone else's at finding appropriate pages?

Yahoo seems more effective in my opinion. But I love Google's simple interface, which is why I choose to use it.

I did say why I didn't like them buying youtube, its the larger companies taking over everything. I don't want to have to buy/use everything from one store/site that kicked all the smaller buisnesses out. Did you know in Paris they have stores dedicated to just cheese? Jumped the bandwagon? I'm assuming by that you mean just go along with the majority? I was under the impression that most people liked Google judging by how rich they are. And as for Google not being a verb it's because it doesn't come up as one in the dictionary, and please don't quote wikepedia at me because not everything in theres fact.

I used to use a variety of different search engines when I wanted to find facts on the internet years, and years ago. One day a mate convinced me to include this new search engine called google in the list of search engines I used. Eventually, I just phased the use of every other out, 'cause google found the most relevant links on a single page, where as earlier I'd have to grab links from different search engines to get around. I like google because quite frankly, as far as search engines goes it's the best out there.

I don't think Googles any more effective then Ask.Com, Yahoo, etc.
