Hi, I need help badly as you can see.

Nice Norton icon in the text bar. Too bad it didn't protect you (like some people seem to assume).

Reboot your computer and hold F8 before the windows loading screen appears. You should get a list of options you can arrow through. One of these options should be "Safe Mode with networking". Select it. Log into the admin account you will be presented with and run your virus scan from there.

You should also run a second scan that isn't Norton, such as Trend Micro's online scan. Running Adaware and Spybot search and destroy from safe mode is also a good idea.

Not at all true. Many freeware or even trials of payed programs work just as well. Personally, i HATE macfee and norton. Norton for being a hog, superimposing, and still managing to not be dominant/better. Macfee for being a microsoft hoodie with their anti-piracy checks. I've had them and you can't be in safe mode (w/networking) as it needs acess to internet to confirm you're not a monster :s

It looks like you have rougue antispyware, I'd go along with Cruisers suggestions, although windows defender is good too (you need 'validated' windows)

errr I don't have a problem with mcafee + xp + safe mode.... maybe thats because I perchased my copies of both? You can't expect things to run as smoothly when your running a warez version, thats just common sense.

WGA has screwed over more legitimate copies of Windows than anything else. It's rather worthless when the crackers had work arounds running days after it was first released and it marks brand new retail keys invalid.

And Mcafee is just as bad as Norton. They've released more than a few updates that decide to wipe legitimate files that aren't infected because they didn't bother testing their update correctly.

AVG Did that to my laptop - somehow it decided about half my critical files were viruses (despite the computer never being hooked up to the internet, and AVG was installed thru a CD) and took the liberty of, rather than asking what to do, automatically deleting them permadently.

Luckily my laptop ran windows 2000, and luckily I don't have a windows 2000 CD.... so after being forced to install XP the hard drive died anyway. woot.

- Oh, and I never used or even tried WGA, no sense in it when I already had plenty of other software that did the same thing, though I expect if I tried it I wouldn't like it. They tend to overcomplicate things and over-stupidfy them at the same time, all whilst giving you lots of bloatware and such.

are your XP? I've heard you talk about ripping an OS, whether you ripped yours or not I really don't care.... Like I said, I run XP pro sp2 and mcafee 2005 just fine, safe mode or not. I wouldn't blame their software on it. Thats beside the point - go ragequit.

Anti-vir and Avast are other alternatives. If you have the cash consider trend micro suite or Zonealarm suite.

As for ripping the OS. Yes. I ripped my legal copy of XP, over my legal copy of ME. On my old computer. I also reinstalled linux over where my legal copy of Xp had been, and I'm now an 3vil h4x0r. [in anycase atm i'm running a 110 dollar of XP2b OEM (i build me compy :)) - satisfied?]

My point, towards macfee, is that i don't like software that treats its user like that. Why does it need to constantly check with it's server whether updating or not whether i'm legitimate? In anycase, it wasn't even much of a program although for a while macfee had been rather powerful in the anti-virus department (that's why i had purchased it per-recommendation/use of their stinger program which seems to have been abandoned?) Btw, i'm not sure if that's changed...This was mid 2005- mid 2006 i used it.

After that, I doubt you know what WGA is. Not many other programs (If any) that validate your Windows Key with Microsoft's systems and then cripple your system if it decides it pirated.

Windows genuine blah blah blah? Can't remmeber what the A is for - and I was always under the assumption that it did more then checking for piracy and counterfeit windows - and software alike, I always thought bundled with it was their antispyware junk... anyway, I just read this article and I'm glad I've never tried it

To be a little more fair to Norton, Cruiser, what this guy has isnt tecnically a virus so why should Norton protect against it. The user has installed some spyware its not Norton or any other AV companies place to stop someone from doing that, even if they did do it by accident.

I'm sorry, but Norton is a bloated pile of junk. I've seen it bring too many systems to their knees because of it's resource hogging tendencies. My dad's laptop and P4 system's are prime examples. Any system I do any cleaning on gets Norton and Mcafee removed and replaced because of the problems they both have caused. I've never had anyone come back to me complaining about their system now being "too fast" because the bloatware isn't eating resources anymore...

Whether or not this problem is a virus or not, we don't know. No HJT log has been posted and we've had no reply from the original poster. If he doesn't know how to clean his own system, it's fairly obvious that he isn't going to be able to classify it as a virus or spyware for us. It may not be Norton's place to stop the install, but it is it's place to be resource friendly and actually do it's job (which I rarely see it actually do correctly :uhh: ).

WOW. This happened to my friend just a few weeks ago. He got it away with a 30 day trial of Norton easily. Luckily, he is getting a new 6,000 dollar cpu soon! 3.8GHz, 4 GB RAM...Evil Scientist Computer?

4GB RAM? Good gosh, do they even make that? I thought it only went up to 2GB (2 1GB additions).

3.8GHz?

Bleh, once I get off my lazy bum and go to Imageshack, there will be a picture here.

Yes. They make gaming computers with 10G of RAM...I just saw one the other day...Spendy, though. :P

There are computers with 4 terabytes (1000 gigs) of RAM, you noob.

If you're going to correct someone, at least get it right yourself.

4 terabytes is roughly 4000 gigabytes, noob.

Server boards that support 64gb are fairly easy to find. 10gb for just a gaming rig is a waste though. :P

10Gb for gaming would be an extreme waste... 2 is plenty for almost any gaming need, and 4 is enough to make any current game run like a well oiled kitten.

Yea, we just built a server at UWWC on a $500 budget and spare parts - some one even brought in a last-gen video card... so we beat that person up. Badly. And mailed him to his family piece by piece.
