Technology, is there a point which it is bad for a society?

Is there a point which technology is bad for a society?

For example, you can answer

no, all the pros outweigh the cons.

yes, all the cons outweigh the pros

depends, at some extents it can be bad, and at others good

The three topics I have chosen to defend/talk about are

-stem cell research

-Plastic Surgery

-internet accessability/illeagal downloads

My veiws are that each has pros and cons, mostly the pros outweigh the cons but the cons can be eliminated if use is restricted(besides the interent one).

Other topics are-

Cloning

Reproductive issues (altering genes in a baby)

Reliance on comp./calcs.

Microchips in animals/GPS

Elimination of paper money/electronic money

Genetically enchanced food

Space Exploration/travel

So what do you say TIF? Help me brainstorm/come up with a few good posiitions and statements? \'

I'm writing a research paper right now about the effect of MP3 players and the internet on the upcoming generations' concept of property. My own personal results have shown me that younger kids see downloading music as a "wrong" less and less. Sure - most of us download things we shouldn't - but we at least acknowledge we probably shouldn't do that. I'm finding out that large amounts of kids don't even see it as wrong to steal someone else's work anymore.

I find it pretty interesting...

I noticed that too. A lot of people on digg think they have a right to other's work, with out compensating them for it. They really, truly believe it is not stealing, and will argue (or bury) with you about it.

hmm :-k I kinda feel bad when I say to someone "Oooh! I love that band" and when I go back and listen to them, I notice that I have in no way supported them :( because most of my mp3 player songs are downaloaded

I probobly only have 6 cds on there that I bought, one of them was a pirated cd I got for a buck in Lithuania, 3 of them I bought from my favorite band(and countless shirts, pins, accessories, and 1 concert ticket), 1 of them I bought this year, the other I had copied from my freinds cd (so make that 5).

This is helping me already, I never would of thought of it that way  But on the other hand, I have downaloaded many songs from alot of artists that I didn't enjoy and ended up deleting to save memory, and I would of been dissapointed if I had purchased their cd, falsely supporting them.

"Technology, is there a point which it is bad for a society?"

I would say so. A wise man once said, "When you create a machine to do the work of a man, you take something away from the man."

I believe that if technology is taking over man's role, it is rarely good for society. However, technology that expands man potential is usually good for society.

For example, if a man always relies on a calculator, his ability to calculate math on his own will diminish. However, a crane expands man potential - it allows him to move more weight than he would be able to on his own.

Most technology can be used in a beneficial way, but much technology can be used in a harmful way.

I could use that as a thesis statement \'

Would you agree with something like this:

"When technology does work that man could do, it takes away from him, but if technology helps man acheive something he couldn't do before, it helps build man"

And then use a similar example to the crane/calculator thing to clear it up? :-k

Well anyways, I'm off for the night, I'll be watching this topic up until December 12, when my project is due. (and even later on, until I present).

Anything raised to an extreme extent is bad in any situation. The same obviously applies to technology. It's extremely powerful, and if used wrongly or carelessly can be extremely dangerous.

Technology itself can't be bad for a society - only improper use of it. In general though, I don't think there should be any restrictions on technology like the government tries to impose. I put more trust in a scientist than any other type of person out there.

I am trying to impress my teacher with this presentation, and I chose to be the only person in the class to work alone so I can have the whole 15min speach time to myself, because this topic was just screaming at me, seeing as I was the help of Super TIF! on my side. Plus, I don't have to spend time convincing my partners on my positions.

That's not a thesis statement. A thesis statement is what you will talk about in order. That sentence would be a good topic sentence in your intro.

With something new there always come things good and bad. It merely depends on how you use the technology.

The short answer? No, it's not bad.

Eh? Well, Where I learned it our thesis statement is supposed to state you opinion about the topic.

So today I worked on my project and got most of the slides on plastic surgery finished ::' already way ahead of most groups.

And every class I've taken where I've had to make a major essay required the thesis statement to state the main points of your essay :)

That is what I think it is.

First, you have your introduction. This can be something that catches the attention of your readers. Have some 'stuff' in your intro that is relevant. Then, state the main points you will cover. This sentence is your thesis statement. Start every supporting paragraph of your essay with something from your thesis. If you say you will cover cheezits in your original thesis statement, start your paragraph with something about cheezits.

That's completely dependent on the style of paper you're writing. If you're just writing a short essay, then that is a pretty decent method to follow - although it is a very elementary writing style. Longer papers move much further away from that style of thesis statement, and even a paper that is just two pages is going to quit relying on that form of a thesis.

I'm not saying you're wrong - because you aren't. But that is only one style of essay writing, and it is normally only used for shorter essays - not papers. So it's kind of dependent on what is being written.

The only issue there that I have any problem with is cloning, but I look forward to a good debate :)

The world would be a whole lot better if little green men in UFO's came down to earth to abduct rednecks.

You haven't taken a wide variety of classes then :P.

Generally though, yes. Your thesis statement should contain some sort of reference to your main points, but it shouldn't be in the same sentence as your actual thesis.

summerpngwy6.jpg

stem cell research -

as long as the donors give consent for thier 'donation' to be used, its ok by me. the potential for groundbreaking medical advancement and the ability to cure heaps of diseases is huge.

plastic surgury -

kinda good - makes people more self-confident (in a slightly superficial sort of way)

bad - put a sociatal emphasis on looking good and makes those who dont 'fit the mould' to get depressed and have low self-esteem.

illegal downloads -

kinda good - gives the artist wide publicity

very bad - severely limits profits for the artist

interesting topics, hope this helps.

When will technology go to far? A man in England is inventing technology that implants computers in your brain, so you can use your thoughts to navigate the internet and communicate with others.

It's a giant step forward to our destruction. How far are we away from hearing "We will add your biological and technological constructiveness to our own. Resistance is Futile." line that SciFi loves to throw around?

Of course that would be a commercial product, for which's installation the interested person would need to pay money. Thus, the choice of installing it would be up to the costumer.

How is becoming techno-organic related to our destruction? If we figure out how to interface directly with computers, allowing us to internalize a lot more information, if we flood our bloodstream with nanobots that perform repairs on the level of the individual cell... Where's the devastation?

-This message was deviously brought to you by: mischief1at.gif

I'm really scared by the idea of computers in our minds. I personally don't want to have to rely on a machine or plug myself in to recharge. What if it got a virus :uhh:

Are you saying this is a thesis statement or not? My point was this: A thesis statement is not an attention getter. It is something that explains what you will talk about. Sub-points of your overall topic if you will.

What is a style of a thesis statement for a longer paper? I assume it is still a statement (1 sentence?).

Oops - I was looking more at his revised version - not Astra's quote. Using what Astra wrote wouldn't be a good thesis statement.

However, thesis statements do not need to be only one statement, and depending on the style of the paper can even be two or three sentences found in multiple paragraphs.

The thesis statement you gave an example is used in smaller essays, because you are usually only make about 3 strong points. Even if one of those three points are broken into multiple paragraphs, the "outline" approach is very good for that small of an essay because its structure is concise enough to be contained like that.

However, with papers much longer than that - it is virtually impossible to do something that like. Let's take this thesis statement he gave:

""When technology does work that man could do, it takes away from him, but if technology helps man acheive something he couldn't do before, it helps build man" "

Granted, I think it's poorly written - but at the same time - it still explains exactly what the paper is going to talk about. And if it is in the context of a longer paper, the sub-points can't necessarily be contained because of how complex they would be. I could take this thesis statement and write a long paper that follows that thesis very well.
