Good ways to work out?

Viktorkrum77

Ok, when you don't have the money to buy the resources that gyms have, what are some good ways to work out your abs and legs, and upper body and arms and such? What are some proven techniques to especially loose weight around your abs?

I know of sit ups, but when you are bent out of shape, you tend not to do them correctly. Is there any way to improve the posture, maybe by using the aided help of a nonexpensive piece of equipment?

So basically this is a thread for ways to help us all loose weight, unless you don't need to, and share good exercising techniques.

Well I honestly don't know, but if you push yourself hard enough you can do it.

No no, that's me =D.

Jogging is great. I gained some leg muscle and lost a bit of weight that way.

I have a massive headache so I'm not going to type much and nor am I the person to tell you much about what exercises to do. But I do have a nice little tip to help keep you going. Set your goals low. Set for first goal to only lose a few pounds within x days. Make sure you know you can reach that goal and once you reach it, set another small goal. You'll feel good about reaching your goal and want to reach your next one even more.

Now I'm off to find some asprin #-o

If you want to lose fat around the waist area, run. It only takes a month of running half an hour per day (every other day) to start finding a noticeable difference in your waistline.

As far as working out, what are you hoping to achieve through it? Do you want to lose weight or gain muscle?

Alright, Here ya go. I'll start something for you.

Crunches - Chin looking at ceiling.

Bicycles - Crunches. Shoulder point to opposite knee.

Leg Lift - Keep legs stiff. Lift them in the air stiff. Support butt with back of hands. (THIS ONE HURTS)

Balance Twists - Balance on Butt. Feet in Air as if in sitting position. Twist from side to side. Don't move legs. (OH MY GOD THIS ONE KILLS)

Do about 20 of those twice a day. You'll be good

Just started a weight room unit after school.

like two people already said, you want to run first. building muscle is going to be hard with a waistline and a poor stamina

don't expect results in two days. two months, maybe more, maybe less. but if you give up, then nothing will happen

BTW: run in the morning, before you eat.

Yea, I'm using a bike trainer thing for around 15 minutes straight each day, and I time it to a TV show.

Yea, I want to start running each morning.

Right now I just want to loose extra fat and weight. But I'd like to try and at least get arm and leg muscle while I'm at it.

If weight is your primary goal, RUN.

Let me give you an experience.

I've never been fat, but during my 10th grade year I decided to run (mainly because my friends wanted me to). Anyway, yes I was absolutely terrible compared to everyone else to start with. My beginning weight was 190lbs, and by the end of the season I was a decent runner and I weighed in at 172 lbs. Thats 18 pounds in about 3 months! And I wasn't even chubby to begin with! (I'm 6'4"). That was running *about* an hour straight per day on average, 6 days a week. Although I have to admit I only did like 30 minutes a day for the first month which is fine when you start out. I would also like to add that I ate about 2 dinners per night during this period.

If you want muscle in your abs...crunches, sewing machines (put your legs out straight while lying on the ground, and pull your feet back one at a time towards your body, then back out, then do the other foot, etc), and also planks if you're up for some hardcore abs. :)

If you're looking for a chest, I don't have too much experience there. I can say, however, that doing push-ups can be rather effective for a minor amount of tone. Also, feel free to use objects lying around your house as weights if you can't go to the gym...might work?

Also, there's one thing a lot of people forget: flexibility. Trust me, this is more important than you realize. Before funning, the coach makes sure we stretch a *lot*. Stretch before and definitely after, it reduces soreness significantly and you will not regret that extra time you spent.

Lastly, I want to comment on the mental part of this. The amount of effort that you put in GREATLY affects the outcome. You should be running until you feel like you can't run anymore. You should run until you feel like you wouldn't run any more even if a $1 bill were sitting 10 feet in front of you. If you puke, that's too much, and that's just bad. But you should feel WORN OUT, that's when you know you've run well enough. Also, don't run THAT hard on your first few runs. That feeling should occur a week or two after you begin, so that you can become familiar with your body. As for ab exercises, you should also go until you can't go any more in most cases, except for when you first start out. I made the mistake of doing too many crunches my first day back after 6 months of nothing, and let me tell you my stomach ached pretty bad for a good 4 days. So like I said, slowly at first (week or so), then you can feel free to make yourself worn out. You will NOT get as good of results as quickly if you do not wear yourself out every time you exercise.

That's my 2 cents, hope that helped.

Some effective ab excercises to do without equipment:

Reverse crunch: Lie on the floor and place your hands behind your neck. Bring your legs, close together, near your chest. Curl your hips off the floor, lower, repeat 5-20 times. The feeling of burn will be great, and will strengthten your abs.

Leg crunch: Lie on the floor and extend your legs upwards. Lift your shoulders off the floor and hold the position for a few seconds. Repeat 5-10 times.

The rest I can't give advice for, because it's hard (or actually nearly impossible) to build muscle mass without training equipment, especially if you need it in your arms or chest/legs.

P.S. The above excercises will not make you have a sixpack if you train long enough. It wont even burn a noticeable amount of fat, it will just strengthten your abs. If you want visible muscles, the only way is to have a proper diet and cut out crap like chocolate and candies. I'm waiting for a bright guy to come on this topic and claim otherwise.

You can't lose weight around your abs, you can only lose weight. No matter what the shopping network TV may tell you, it's not possible to 'target' weightloss by for example working out a single area.

At about 8-11% bodyfat (25+ is considered obese and 15-17 is about the average for a male) you will have visible muscles, which can boost your motivation to grow them bigger. If you have a layer of pudding covering your abs, the only way you can make them visible is diet.

Yea I'm looking to loose my gut. Preferably without major dieting, I'd rather do the extra work with exercise and just watch what I eat.

You won't see an increase in your cardiovascular endurance unless you do more than 15 minutes at a heart rate of 135-180 bmp. Just throwing in a little bit of my knowledge. I can't seem to bring it all together at once right now.. :-s

Do they have a weight room at your school? If so maybe get involved in something like that.

For Legs:

Run or Bike. I see you have started the training bike. Try getting on a real bike (if you have access to one). Because then you get experience on hills and different conditions.

For upper body:

Push ups or Sit-ups. (For that gut)

I know you cannot do a regular push-up, but you HAVE to practice. In a week or two you may to be able to do 5+ regular push-ups. Take the push-up slow, if you cannot do it, come back later and try it again. Eventually you will get it. I recommend maybe getting a dumbell or two. That helps your biceps.

No, I'm taking a health/PE class. But my school has no gym, and weight equipment. So we make due with a flat auditorium and walking around the halls.

I do have some weight equipment, just not gym-quality stuff.

you have the wrong idea of dieting; the best way to lose weight is eat healthy and exercise, its a proven fact (somewhere...). You can go on a diet (as in less food) to lose weight, but you won't build up your body, and building muscle will be a LOT harder

Do you have a chin-up bar? That is a good way to gain upper body strength. You may not be able to do one yet, but after you do some push-ups and sit ups it should be no problem.

There are always Pushups. Just put your arms at your side. Look straight foward. Do 100+ A night for a while. And if you can't do sit-ups, do curl ups, just go up half way untill you can get all the way up ::'

Run, jog, go punch some raw meat in a giant fridge (seriously lol). I'm pretty deceint weight. I wegh 140 at age 14. I work out usually, skate, and work hard here at home (live with grandparents, so they need extra help). I used to do Karate (Ughh! 500 pushups if we couldn't find our belt -.- for 5 years, so I know what I'm doing.. ) I alway do football, I lost 18 pounds in 2 months, I know it's not much, but I was regular weight, so it was really hard.. I was anorexic, honostly, don't starve yourself if your trying to loose weight..

Goodluck with the working out!

That's an o.k plan, but you really do have to watch what you eat. Calculate your calories and your consumption at a site like this and compare it to the amount you eat daily. If you take in more calories than you consume, you will be gaining more weight despite your training.

I almost jumped in a wrong conclusion, but then I saw you meant increase in cardio endurance, not weightloss. :) But for weightloss, the ideal heart rate is is 90-120bpm for a period of 30 minutes. I have a difficult time maintaining that though, I always go far over that but then again I prefer gym+diet over constant cardio that can without exercise shrink your muscles instead of growing them.

Don't have one, I used to when my brother did gymnastics. Come summer maybe I could make due with our parallel bar.
