darkblade986
This is an issue I come across quite alot now aday. People post pictures onto the forums, but don't bother cropping them. This is especially a problem for people who post a picture from a 1024x768 monitor and they're being viewed by a person on an 800x600. What I suggest is that a rule be added, where any picture of in-game play (or any picture in general), must be cropped down to either a view of the game screen only (no surrounding blackness or view of your browser), or crop it so that the absolute minimum amount of space is taken. Main problem with this is that oversized pictures stretch the window, and with it text stretches with it. This makes it very hard to simply read through, because you then have to go and use the horizontal scroll bar to see the rest of the text. I understand that if a picture did that but that much space was needed, that'd be fine. However the rule should then be a max dimension, where any picture exceeding it must be scaled to size. Perhaps the rule should also be made where if you're posting an image from an image hosting site (www.imageshack.us for example), and a Thumbnail view is available, that should be required to be used so that if someone wants to see the picture, they can click and see it. Otherwise they should be able to read through on their own without seeing it. This would also help people on dial-up connections. They could get right to reading the post without having to wait for the picture if they don't want to. don't worry, you are going to "hell" anyway. wanna race to see who gets there first?Officially reached 100 Combat at 1:33PM EST, June 14, 2007First Dragon Drop: Dragon Chain (Dust Devils) @ 10:48PM EST, July 14, 2008, lv113 combat
tripsis
I don't think people should have to use Imageshack thumbnails, but I understand what you're saying. I think there are a fair amount of people who just flat out don't know how to properly crop. As long as the community were helpful when it came to teaching people how to crop, or providing them with useful links that could teach them, I'd be fine with it. I can see how this could fit under section 1.2 - Irritating Posting Styles/Spamming. - 99 fletching | 99 thieving | 99 construction | 99 herblore | 99 smithing | 99 woodcutting - - 99 runecrafting - 99 prayer - 125 combat - 95 farming - - Blog - DeviantART - Book Reviews & Blog
darkblade986
I was thinking that I might like to write a guide on cropping, and so I went to the Player-made guide section. I looked at the bottom sticky (the one about how you should write your guide), and ironically enough I stumbled upon a guide on cropping for beginners using MS Paint. This guide is located in The Gallery (not sure what page), linked to here. Perhaps this should get stickied in The Gallery, and in the process copied and moved to the main forums (General P2P, General, ect) so that people can read it and know. don't worry, you are going to "hell" anyway. wanna race to see who gets there first?Officially reached 100 Combat at 1:33PM EST, June 14, 2007First Dragon Drop: Dragon Chain (Dust Devils) @ 10:48PM EST, July 14, 2008, lv113 combat
Cruiser
What ever happened to the forum automatically down sizing large pictures like that? I have some random memory that something like that was in effect at some point around here...

Mercifull
I dont think this forum ever had a feature that did that Cruiser? I implemented some code onto Darkwebz that did it but i dont recall it being on Tipit Mercifull <3 Suzi "We don't want players to be able to buy their way to success in RuneScape. Glad you were able to stumble across the link. it's a lot easier to get over yourself when you look at intelligence the same way you look at beauty, or height, or eye color: being smart is easy, but being good is hard ... being smart is handed to you, being good is handed to *nobody*. Kill_Life
I agree that pictures need to be cropped. Less irritating etc... Better to look at, and less flame. I mean, how hard can it be to crop a picture? And that guide used to be in Player-Made guides. After some discussing, it got moved to the Gallery. Tough I support this to give the Forums a better look, most people won't even bother to crop it... -.- Maybe if it's a rule... Or they won't post pictures at all... darkblade986
Sorry for bumping up this old topic, but I just found something that I think verifies my point (to a degree...) 2.3 - BBCode may be used only for images, links, or non-disturbing (excessive) text Use of images, flash, or text within the body of a message may be restricted as deemed necessary by Moderators for board performance issues. Always convert your images to '.gif', '.jpg', or '.png' graphic formats before posting. Never use .bmp's as their size is large and bandwidth consuming. You should also 'crop' all images before posting to reduce their physical size and prevent forum distortion. The rule I was requesting was already a rule in the first place, although it's one of the less-enforced rules. Perhaps the rule should begin to be enforced now? don't worry, you are going to "hell" anyway. wanna race to see who gets there first?Officially reached 100 Combat at 1:33PM EST, June 14, 2007First Dragon Drop: Dragon Chain (Dust Devils) @ 10:48PM EST, July 14, 2008, lv113 combat

Perhaps the rule should begin to be enforced now? Yeah, you pretty much hit the nail on the head there. My suggestion is for people to just report the post and state the reasoning. In my experience I find this is really only be a problem in the high traffic picture based boards (Rate This, Blogscape, Gallery etc.) I really hate horizontal scrollling so I often just remove the image tags when it distorts the page. 571st to 99 Fm Nov. 4 '06 - 315th to 99 Crafting Mar. 3 '07 - 3410th to 99 Fishing Sept. 18 '0726378th to 99 Cooking Oct. 16 '07 -.- 99 Thieving Dec. 29 '07 - 1343rd to 99 Farming June 5 '081807th to 99 Agility Nov. 8 '08 - 3094th to 99 Smithing Feb. 14 '092012 total - 91 combat
Kill_Life
So we can just remarque uncropped pictures as spam? If only... Never has a mod done something about this. It's finally time this happens. People will start taking care of it I hope. Will make the forums a better place. I'd report it as "other" and say that the picture is too large and if you wish also refer to the rule. I've removed img tags on pictures before (with a warning to crop it) so it has been done at least once :P but I usually reserved it for those that distort the page beyond its standard dimensions. 571st to 99 Fm Nov. 4 '06 - 315th to 99 Crafting Mar. 3 '07 - 3410th to 99 Fishing Sept. 18 '0726378th to 99 Cooking Oct. 16 '07 -.- 99 Thieving Dec. 29 '07 - 1343rd to 99 Farming June 5 '081807th to 99 Agility Nov. 8 '08 - 3094th to 99 Smithing Feb. 14 '092012 total - 91 combat
