jin_sakura226
The other day i went to a DNA research lab.. Anyways the lady told us that they can genetically select certian traits for the fetus (brain.. or blue eyes).. But mostly they haven't come to that point since their major goal is treatment for people with down sydronome.from chromosome 21.. or some other disorder in the karotype of the patient. Anyways technology is taking over as we see it, So many people with plastic surgey.., and soon with people's brain and looks? I mean cell phone r used by every kid in high school now.... Wat happened to the good old days...where it was less dangerous? Anyways i wanna hear some comment on wat u guys think about technology.. :D wanna play ??^_^ total=1650+ =)time pass by so fast -_-
Parabola
How did you get from diseases being cured to things being more dangerous than they used to be?
Celt23
Just get used to it. :P Technology will just get more and more important. Soon the day will come where 12 years of schooling is not necessary for a diploma, and you can just stick an general education implant into your brain and know the same stuff as a 12th grader at 6 years old. Adam007
Where did you take the illogical leap of technology equating to danger? You've let Hollywood make you think that. I know it's naturally human to fear technology, since every technological breakthrough has been faced with massive fear, but just think logically. Technology won't take over the world. Technology can only make the world a better place. This isn't Terminator, GATTACA, or Jurassic Park we're living in.
insane
Technology can only make the world a better place. Yeah that atomic bomb is awesome! There's a fine line between technology helping us and us using technology to change our every circumstance expecting it to fix all of life's problems. When you're using an external thing (technology) to fix internal problems then problems start to arise.

Lionheart_0
I smell Some xenophobes around here.... Anyways, We cant fear technology. We created it, we can destroy it, we own it! Its the same old thing, guns dont kill people, people kill people. Guns just let other people kill people faster. Sig by IkuraiYour Guide to Posting! But overall you can't bash technology just because bad things can come from it. Bad things can come from anything, it's just the bad things that can come from technology are unknown so people tend to fear it over other 'bad things.' Parabola
It's not as simple as a baby catalogue though. If you knew your child was going to have a terrible genetic disorder such as Duchenne muscular dystrophy and you had the opportunity to fix that, you would really deliberately put your child through that lifetime of suffering? If so, you're getting sickeningly close to mother Teresa. Huh? It's a joke. One which some Brits will get.
hellbellz
Meh, I'm waiting for a robot to genetically wipe my butt for me  Seriously though, if you think about it Michael Jackson does have a nice nose. anonimu
It can be considered evolution. It's good in some aspects and bad in others. IMO, advances in technology are good... I know what you mean, it's just the thought of custom babies that makes me want to hurl. Yeah, in that regard I agree with you. You've known me long enough to know I support most scientific advancement to the fullest extent, but if you saw that one thread about human genetic engineering (which I wish you would have posted on), surprisingly the majority of people(at least of those who posted) supported aesthetically engineering people, which I do find wrong. But as I'd hope you'd agree, genetic engineering itself isn't an immoral science as many believe it to be.

Zonorhc
Technology will hurt us more than harm us. Just look at the weopons the army is developing atm. Yes, of course, because clearly the army uses them on everyone, everyday, or plans to. God, don't people like you use your brains before hitting submit? Parabola
I wasn't talking about diseases, I was talking about aesthetics. And what does mother Teresa have to do with this? One criticism of mother Teresa (from people such as Christopher Hitchens and Aroup Chatterjee) is that she didn't ease the suffering of those she took in, only try to convert them to catholicism. She saw their being poor as being 'god's will' and so didn't try to change it. I was likening someone who didn't want to prevent a child living a life of suffering to that. There is no discrete line between fixing defects and 'upgrading' aesthetics. A child may be set to have a slight deformity which may in the future be fixable genetically - however whether it is a true defect or not is a matter of opinion, everyone could be slightly better looking in some way. It's a foot in the door effect.

So taking in dying people and giving them a place to live didn't ease their suffering? Sure it wasn't the greatest place to be, but it was sure better than the treatment the Hindus gave them (ie. none). She saw their being poor as being 'god's will' and so didn't try to change it. And how would she go about making them financially rich? She had no money of her own. Don't you think it's a little hypocritical to be criticizing someone who devoted their entire life to housing people with AIDS? I mean, I doubt Hitchens will ever do anything like that. assassin_696
Technology is clearly not "taking over". It's advancing, and becoming more mainstream and part of our lives. Is that a bad thing? Essentially no, we remain in control of the technology, to take the old fashioned attitude of it was better in the "good old days" is a naive attitude, technology has done so much for us. In the immortal words of Bob Dylan, "The times they are a changin", and I can't wait to see what new scientific and technological breakthroughs are round the corner. Parabola
And how would she go about making them financially rich? She had no money of her own. I was not referring to making them financially rich. I was referring to the poverty, suffering and starvation they underwent. There is a difference between ending that and making them financially rich. Her shelters did not serve to help people, they served simply to provide them with a catholic death. She did have money - from donations, enough to open convents and nunneries in over 120 countries, but not enough to build even a small hospital with good medical practices. She was satisfied with keeping the suffering suffering whilst she spent millions on furthering her own religious beliefs.

Death_By_Pod
Wat happened to the good old days...where it was less dangerous? Anyways i wanna hear some comment on wat u guys think about technology.. :D What are the good old days? Early 1700's? The industrial revolution in the late 1700's is what brought the biggest change in technological conditions. Previous to that you were performing manual labour (usually starting as a child) doing tasks much more suited to machines.
jin_sakura226
When i meant the good old days was when there were less weapons, and machine... Sure technology has created a lot of advantages like the assembly line and other cures..But i still think that if we didn't created all these there would be less problems... For example the phone makes all the kids in school text each other during class next thing u know a rumor gets spread all wrong..and this lil gurl even made a 911 call saying they had a bomb in the school.. Car, gun, machine, and all these tech stuff if they weren't created would there be all these death or injuries today... but sure it make up for time and makes work a lot faster and productative. Still make the world a even more dangerous place... wanna play ??^_^ total=1650+ =)time pass by so fast -_-
