Spotify Discussion & Playlists

Spotify is a new way to enjoy music. Simply download and install, before you know it youll be singing along to the genre, artist or song of your choice. With Spotify you are never far away from the song you want.

There are no restrictions in terms of what you can listen to or when. Forget about the hassle of waiting for files to download and fill up your hard drive before you get round to organising them. Spotify is instant, fun and simple.

Because music is social, Spotify allows you to share songs and playlists with friends, and even work together on collaborative playlists, Friday afternoon in the office might never be the same again! Were music lovers like everyone else.

We want to connect millions of people with their favorite songs by creating a product that people love to use. We respect creativity and believe in fairly compensating artists for their work. Weve cleared the rights to use the music youll listen to in Spotify.

Like the description mentions briefly, you can make playlists in Spotify and share them with other people. As you can imagine, this is a truly excellent way to discover lots of new music you weren't familiar with before. The number of bands I've discovered through sharing playlists with friends is incredible. :)

Since Spotify is currently in beta, you need to be either invited by a person who has invite codes, or purchase a Premium account (costs 10eur/month). If you're a U.S citizen however, then you'll unfortunately need to wait until Spotify becomes available over there. For those of you who live in the UK, the program is totally free, no need to be invited or anything. Just go to https://www.spotify.com/en/get-started/ to get started.

Those of you who want invite codes shouldn't have a hard time finding them though. One good place to look for them is in the various Spotify groups on Facebook where people post invite codes all the time. Alternatively, pay 10eur and you'll get to use Spotify without any ads for a month, and you receive 1 new invite each day to give to a friend (although I've heard you get up to 10 invites each day now, but I haven't bothered to look into that). Seriously, it's totally worth the 10euros, since when that month has passed, you're just downgraded to a Free account.

Oh and did I mention Spotify works with Last.fm as well?

I've been using the software for about 5 months now and I've completely stopped downloading music - the library is huge. And they add, on average, 2,000 new albums each week (last week they added over 13,000!), and all new albums and artists are released on their blog (see other links in the bottom). Since I've been using it for a while, feel free to ask should you have any questions. I know there are a few other TIFers who use Spotify too, and they can probably answer your questions as well.

Now, to the playlists. Most of mine are collaborative playlists I share with my friends, but to prevent people from messing those up (at the moment, anybody can add/remove tracks from collaborative playlists) I've copied and pasted the songs into new "solo" playlists. When you link to a playlist, please add a short description explaining what type of music we can expect from it. Thanks!

Is there anyway to browse their library without signing up?

Not as far as I know. But if there are any specific artists you'd like to know about, I guess I could search for them and reply with whatever result I get?

Is it sort of like radioblogclub?

I hadn't heard of it before, but after a quick look the only similarities I can see is that you stream the songs directly, instead of having to download them. That, and that you see the album art of the song you're currently listening to. :P

I'd say Spotify is a lot like iTunes, except completely free. You download the client, log onto your account where you have all your playlists and everything stored.

spotify.th.png

At the top you see "Home", where you can see new album releases; check the Top Lists in a number of different countries, and they also recommend artists for you judging by the music you've listened to.

Then there's the "Radio", which is a lot like the Last.fm radio. You check which genres of music you want to hear, and from what decades (you can check "Older" if you want to hear songs older than the 50s).

Then we have the queue. It's a lot like the one in Winamp: put songs and organise them however you want. You can also see the next 50 songs that will be played. Also under "Queue" is a thing called "History" which lists the 250 latest songs you listened to in case you forgot.

Below "Queue", you have the 5 most recent artist/band you've searched for stored for you for easy access. Aside from the basic artist search, you can search for genres (ex. genre:rock) and years (ex. year:1978-1985) and you'll have a list of all songs released during those years.

And below that, your playlists are stored.

Looks cool, I'll definitely check it out.

If you love music, you definitely should; I can't stress this enough. You're from Scandinavia too, right? So it'll be available for you as well. Just google search for invite codes, or check out the Spotify groups on Facebook. Alternatively pay the 10eurs and prepare to have your freakin' mind blown.

Nah I'm Canadian, apparently I'm on the waiting list though. If it's not available here I guess I'll just have to wait. Or just send them an email and kindly ask if I could get access (it's worked for me before haha).

I don't think you can apply for an invite into the beta unless it's available in your country. Not positively sure though.

I was a little reluctant at first to try it but I can honestly say that it's completely changed the way I listen to music. I haven't downloaded anything in weeks since I've started using this, it's fantastic. Admittedly the usual suspects (Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, Pink Floyd) still aren't there but you'll probably have those in your libraries anyway.

I also put a few of my friends onto it as well and they really love it. It's such a great way to give albums a try that you might not want to buy/download but still want to listen to. And the amount of music really is vast. Definitely worth getting into.

Um.. lets see could you search Death Cab For Cutie, Fleet Foxes, Peter Bjorn, and Kanye West. I just want to see basically how much of their work the site has available.

Downloaded it just after i posted earlier. Spent all afternoon making playlists of music i've been looking for for ages. Found a couple of new bands im gonna look into as well.

As others have said, if you're into music (hell, even if you're not, this'll get you into it) this really is an awesome piece of kit.

How did you manage to trick the website? Can you share the information? : p

took forever but I'm in. Can't wait to try it out!

If you used a proxy prepare to have the service unavailable to you again. A lot of people from the U.S. etc. used proxies in the beginning, the guys at Spotify noticed this and prevented it from happening again... I don't remember exactly what they do, but they log your IPs anyway.

Well, tbh I don't know why they're restricting it to some areas in the first place...

That's a big thumbs down for them.

Wait, what? So you'd rather they get their [wagon] sued by some money-hungry corporation? They don't have the rights to release the software yet in the U.S., otherwise they'd do it. These things take time; it's not even past beta yet.

I wasn't talking about the US, I meant some areas of Europe. Anyway, yeah, I understand.
