  1. I've written up my request. Going to submit it to my system admin (aka DAD) once you guys think it's good. Also if there are any programs you think I might want to add, please tell me. (the only ones that are not windows default are GIMP 2.4 and Apophysis which is whatever the stable version from sourceforge was about 3 months ago) Also, does anyone know of a driver that is compatible with GIMP (so a TWAIN one I think), an EPSON Stylus Photo RX600, and a Brother MFC-8460N that works on Windows 2000? And one that you can get to work with GIMP, a Canon PowerShot G5, and a Canon PowerShot A470? Basically so I can do direct scan to GIMP/import photos directly to GIMP. [hide=THE REQUEST]Things I Would Like Added to the Computer and Why Name: FireFox 3.5 Type: Internet Browser Website: http://www.firefox.com Why: Internet Explorer 6 is now eight years old. It does not properly support transparent .pngs and has large security holes within it that werent fixed by Microsoft because they dont support IE6 anymore. FireFox is updated regularly with security updates and is much faster than IE6. It has anti-phishing and anti-malware software built in which notify you of an impostor or unsafe site without loading the site (it will tell you why it thinks its unsafe as well). There is also a feature that lets you make sure the site is legit before you buy something (Instant Web Site ID). When you download a file, the computers AV automatically checks it to protect your computer. FireFox has a built in pop-up blocker. It also has automatic updates so as new security issues are found, they are fixed. Simple features include tabbed browsing, session restore, one-click bookmarking, and the Awesome Bar. (See http://blog.washingtonpost.com/security ... for_2.html for information about the security of FireFox versus Internet Explorer) How would it affect the computer? : You would have a choice of using FireFox or IE6. Bookmarks can be easily transferred from IE to FF during installation or later on (instructions are on the website at http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Imp ... t+Explorer ). Java and other plugins will need to be reinstalled (but they ought to be updated anyway, so win-win). Name: GIMP 2.6 Type: Graphics Editing Program Website: http://www.gimp.org Why: The version of GIMP thats currently on the computer is version 2.4. Version 2.6 has new updates and works better. The full list of updates is at http://www.gimp.org/release-notes/gimp-2.6.html, here are the more significant ones: o Toolbox Menu merged with Image Window menu. o Toolbox and Docks always above Image windows. o You can now pan beyond the Image Border. o Improved Free Select Tool o Added Brush Dynamics (YAY!) o Text is now wrapped within bounding box. How would is affect the computer? : It would replace the current GIMP 2.4. Since Im usually the only person who uses it, it wouldnt really change anything. Name: Terragen Type: Graphics Environment Rendering Program Website: http://www.planetside.co.uk/content/view/21/36/ Why: Its a tool for rendering realistic looking environments thats free and easy to learn. I think it would be fun to have and I could make some cool stuff with it. Basically it has the true usefulness of Apophysis (fractal generator) but it would be a cool thing to have. How it would affect the computer? : It would just use up some hard drive space in installing it. Would add an interesting toy to the list of fun stuff on the computer. Other Things that Should be Addressed Microsoft Office: Upon starting any of the programs (except Publisher) the Windows Installer window appears, and you must click Cancel to get the program to open. In Publisher, none of the wizards work unless you open a pre-existing publication and edit it. I cannot open any Word, Excel, or PowerPoint document without a message appearing that the program cannot find the correct path, but if I have the program open already, I can. Im pretty sure that these problems were caused when the hard drive blew up, and that it could be fixed by reinstalling Microsoft Office. Norton Internet Security: I would like the shortcut removed from my desktop since I cant do anything with it. It would also be nice not to have the categories Job Search, News, and Interactive/Chat blocked by it. I find its kind of irrelevant because I consider Facebook Interactive/Chat but its not blocked[/hide] I'm feeling pretty smug right now 8-)
  2. At this point, I'm pretty sure it's a trust issue. If it is, there's absolutely nothing I can do about it because my parents don't have their priorities straight. I'm trusted with their lives (I've got my permit and can drive with them n the car), I'm trusted not to abuse drugs, not to be an idiot and get involved in tobacc/alcohol... I've got a 3.94 GPA but apparently can't be trusted not to blow up the computer. I now have a completely logical arguement: I use the computer thse most, so when I discover a problem, I should be able to fix it without bothering you constantly about it. Gonna try that tonight. I tried ff portable today but it couldn't connect for some reason.

  4. I think that was pretty amazing. And full of win.
  5. I thought 'Just let me play' summed up my feelings about rs perfectly. I don't enjoy constant updates that have new requirements. I thought 'the big tease' was pretty interesting also. I missed the fictional article though, looking forward to next week's!
  6. I guess I forgot a couple of important details. The reason I can't download anything is because we have Norton Internet Security 2003 (+the limited account) and it won't let you run any [Caution: Executable File] files you've downloaded unless you have admin access. I can't even move shared shortcuts from my desktop. Tomorrow after I go to the doctor's I will try to download portable firefox and an IE6 skin. Also my dad is and has been for a while a software developer for various companies, and he thinks he knows everything there is to know. And I kind of live in the middle of nowhere so door to door work isn't really an option. The only reason I'm on right now is because I'm in the process of downloading my insulin pump to the computer... It's easier if I don't have to disconnect it. I have sort of created a problem by getting IE8 on the laptop, I've sort of solved it by telling them to update the Java, but I can't do anything about it because I can't update the Java. Plus if it does actually fix it, they'll ignore anything that it was my suggestion that fixed it because they know it was my fault (even though my mom has admitted that she'll take the blame for the IE8).
  7. (sorry I guess the dsi only lets you put that many characters in) What computer would you recommend getting? I know it's more of a T&C question, but I'd like your thoughts. Obviously cheap is good. I'd rather not have a laptop because I'd like to be able to upgrade it frequently. I'd like to build it myself if possible (I might be taking a class on that next year in school).
  8. If you frequent the Tech and Computers forum, you know of my plight. My parents are totally OCD about our computers. And I currently hate them for it. I have a restricted account on the computers with internet access, and I share one without with my brother. A week ago I convinced my mom to let me download IE8 (because I figured my dad would be okay with it since it's MS and I thought it would work better than IE7) on her login. So I got it all set up, and it's okay, not amazing, but imo slightly better once you've got the kinks worked out. Only problem was Java wouldn't load. Since I wasn't thinking, I thought it was because IE didn't have it in the cache yet. I then got off and didn't use it until today. Then my brother tried to play RS and got really mad because it wouldn't work. He then yelled at me. I thought for a while (and since everyone always thinks it's IE) I think it's Java. So I told my dad that. Then my mom came up and asked me if I could play RS on my login. I told her I couldn't, that I told dad I thought it was the Java, and that he needed to fix it because I wasn't allowed to. I got mad because she kept going on about how she really shouldn't have let me do it and all this crap so I yelled at her and she took away my computer for tomorrow. (I'm writing on my DSi) How would you get two over-controlling parents to let you have even a little say in what programs are available to use on the computer? Multiple people have said to buy my own, but I don't have any money. I'm 15, have a good knowledge of computers and graphic art, and I have experience working with kids. I do yard work and odd things around my house but my parents pay me next to nothing. I would try doing some sort of commission art but I'm afraid they'll flip when I ask if I can. What other sorts of summer jobs (or part-time year round) could someone like me get? I do also have First Aid and an Adult CPR certification from the Red Cross. What computer would you recommend get
  9. Can something be added about the text size? My sig has 3 lines of text, but takes up very little space because it's size 75 and 85 (I think) and my sig is only 110px high. Also: The hide tag 'clause' means this 4 lines of text OR up to 10 inside hide tags, right? So if you have more than 4 the rest must be in hid tags? (sorry I probably didn't explain that well, I'm pretty mad right now)
  10. Now my dad's really mad at me because I did it without his permission (I asked my mom because he was gone)... And my brother got inanely mad because he couldn't play RS (even though it's never worked properly on that comp) so my dad said he's going to uninstall it (which I don't think you can do) Anyway, going to attempt to explain that it's probably Java's fault. If I don't return I have probably been grounded for life for appearing slightly knowledgable. And tomorrow I am dling portable ff, I honestly don't care anymore.
  11. I can't change the font because I'm an idiot and didn't save a version without text, but here's the resized sig: [img=http://i44.tinypic.com/e05pn8.gif]

I don't know how long I've been out... When I opened my eyes the sun was just rising. Wizz had fallen asleep next to the now dead fire. I noticed I was lying on my side, with Wizz's amulet around my neck. That thought brought back the little that I remembered from my extended sickness... Many odd shapes and disconnected thoughts floated through my mind, but nothing specific. I wonder if it was because of this new world... I know I'm not eating the berries that look like raspberries for a while; I don't think they are.
  14. NOTICE: I'll be away until the 27th-ish. Feel free to request sigs while I'm gone, but they won't be done until the 27th.

  16. (besides having IE8)... So I updated the browser on my XP laptop to IE8 (from IE7 I believe). Being particularly bored, after disabling anything that said Microsoft on it (besides the browser itself) I attempted to play RuneScape. The applet wouldn't load at all, it showed a black screen with the timer mouse icon. I did not disable any 'add-ons' labelled Sun Microsystems or Java. Also when I attempted to refresh the page by pressing F5 or close the window it froze up on me. Is there something I need to do to get it to load Java? It's a Dell Inspiron laptop running WinXP SP3 (and it's fully updated with all of the 'important' updates as said by MS)

  18. Is it Hey There Delilah? Though somehow I doubt it.
  19. It's looking up... My mom can't check her e-mail on the 2000 anymore. (THANK YOU YAHOO FOR WHATEVER YOU DID!) So she was kinda mad about it and said she'd talk to my dad about it... With any luck, I'll get back on Friday to see FireFox. I would buy a computer (they actually said I could use the wifi, though unless it's secured (which it's not) there's nothing they can do about it) but I'm lazy and don't have a job.

Pixar can do no wrong. SO HAPPY! :D I think Toy Story 2 was the first movie I saw in theaters (would have been 6 at the time, so it's right... No actually I saw A Bug's Life and that was before that. Either way Pixar movies OWN)

German: Hallo, wie geht's dir? Ich bin gut, und du? (or Sie, if you're being polite) Ich bin gut. Hello. How are you? I'm good, and you? I'm good. Best word though: Eichhörnchen. It means squirrel. Pronounced ike-hern-shen. Or Haferflocken. Means oatmeal.
