With a pure def you can pk woth ranged and mage, really good, but you need to be 75+ in magic, ranged and defense, then you will own believe me :D

Hmm, i think its good a hybrid, better then pures, you can do this, unless you use ancients and range, good for pures, then if you prefer whip + rune make an hybrid... You must choose, i prefer a pure with high magic and ranged...
