I've always figured that Darkmeyer was in the north, however there is that large gate to the east, who know's what's past that.

Nope, but you need to do a miniquest to access the abyss.

It's north of shilo village. Graahk familiars take you very close, and so does the abyss. You also need pure essence. However, You shouldn't craft them because they give like 1 gp profit each and are abyssmal xp. I think fire runes or steam runes are a better alternative, but it's been a while since I've done low lvl rc training, so I could be wrong.

You should melee them. Range should only be trained with a cannon tbh.

Since you don't have ext magics or a wolper, you should buy one. However, this doesn't mean that you should go out and buy one and leave it in your bank till you quit. You can just buy it when you're ready to train mage and sell it when you're done. Also, as a caveat, there's much better ways to train magic.
