Well I was running ores for my friend from the blast furnace since she let me borrow her mudstaff. And I decided to have a shot at the pump thing. I noticed my xp was going up fairly quickly, quicker than rock crabs anyway. I was thinking if I got 30 crafting so I could repair the pipes when they break, I could just go to any random world with no people at the furnace and just pump for xp - would this be effective? What happens if the temperature shoots up past red?

Ibanez seems the way to go. A quick tip - Play with your fingers from the start, never use a plectrum unless its TOTALLY necessary. Plectrums on bass look stupid, and sound rubbish too.
